In 1975 Porsche released their most dangerous car yet, the 930 911 Turbo. A huge engine, with a massive turbo, that put fear into even the most brave racing driver. It was notorious for it's handling, taking the lives of many and even culminating in a landmark court case that cost Porsche MILLIONS.

My neighbor had a Porsche 930 when I was a teenager. I learned to drive in it from his daughter as my instructor ( Daddy didn't know about this). She taught me to keep my foot in it during a turn, never lift off. I loved that car and bought it fifteen years later when her Dad decided to sell it. I still own it to this day. BTW, I used it in driving test at the DMV.

I worked as a Porsche mechanic back in the 80s and the 930 was my favorite. What impressed me the most was the brakes which, which under hard braking, would lock the inertia reels on the seat belts. Porsche was wonderful to work for and always took care of their customer's concerns. They never buried any technical problems but, instead, would immediately issue tech bulletins rectifying any problems. By the way, Colonel Borman of Apollo 8, actually deadsticked a 104 after an engine failure!

Darwinism at it finest. If more people played games like gran turismo licensing courses then the roads may just become a little safer but you still gunna have the drowsy, drunk or idiot playing on thier phone. Thats why I hate driver assists they are making the masses lazy to thier own surroundings expecting the car with do it for them.

I took one ride in a 911 turbo. One…that was enough for me. The driver was a crazy nut trying to impress me and before I knew it we were doing 130 in a 55. I had a young son at the time and vowed never to drive with this guy again or drive fast enough to die instantly. Crazy learning experience. Life lesson.

Had a neighbor who took me in a ride with his second Viper after he crashed the first Gen up and down a hill. It was the most awesome moment but when he said the tires are warmed up yet and pushed it hard in the corners I thought we were going to die knowing the brakes on those cars 2nd Gen are not going to stop it. Best day of my life so I can attest to your story. Still waiting to ride in a 930 or 911.

The CGT's "widowmaker" issue was the way the rear suspension was mounted. It has a tendency to suddenly break the mounting point at the top of the rear suspension which in turns cause the cars balance to get extremely upset the car at really bad times. What killed Paul Walker and the driver. Not he driver's mistake, but the Porsche's defect =(

Went for a ride in one back in '81 or '82. The brakes are what I was most shocked by. Felt like my eyeballs were going to fall out of my head.

Can confirm. Around the same time a mechanic friend was working on a customer's 911 and asked if I wanted to go for a drive. When it spooled up you could barely get your head off the headrest, and I clearly remember the seatbelt cutting into my chest under hard braking. At the time I had no idea how much danger I was in.

yeah funny how everyone is always talking about being pushed back into the seat when hammering it down, however, it's the windscreen faceplant when hitting the breaks in such cars that always gives me the most amazing experience. this is for sure something you need to practice regularly if you own such a car, for the simple fact of conditioning your brain for it. It is completely unnatural and unreal to comprehend at first.

NO freaking way would I ever get into a single turbo 911. Once was enough. I was a passenger in one and I shit my pants (no exageration, I actually did shit my pants). When that turbo spooled and kicked in, that thing became an uncontrollable wild fucking animal.

@@ross_ulbright7779 My car was a 'grey' import into the US. To meet federal requirements it was refit with an 85 mph (140 kph) speedo. Once all requirements were met and signed off I immediately got the matching VDO US 180 mph (300 kph) fitted.

brakmaster, you have to understand that as you get older, those 'behind you' in experience and knowledge won't get introduced to the same sources that you did. In fact, the sources that introduced you to new knowledge that you believed were the first were just repeats of already 'well documented and well known' information to those older/wiser than you. No matter how old you are, you need to grow up and stop assuming YOUR experience should be EVERYONE'S experience only. I know all the facts in this video - I even owned a 930 and one of the fastest TVRs. But it's fun to see how the 'same knowledege' is reformatted, represented, and reinterpreted every time. Take the next step in your understanding of yourself in this world, it's not about you and your journey only...

As someone who works around these monsters and knows people who races them.. a common theme is “don’t lift.. ever” you have to be braver than anyone on the track.. but when you have it just right.. it’s like riding a wave and moving with the turbo and oversteer, and when done right it’s faster than it has any right to be… amazing work here.. can’t wait to see more

I play a lot of racing games, this may not sound like a lot(ok maybe it's not impressive at all), but that's basically my saying with any pre 2000' cars, just don't lift mid corner, I've gotten good at countering oversteer. Except for the civetta bolide. Don't lift, don't floor it, just hold the throttle at 25%, and hold on for your F** life.

I drove a Ruf 930 in '92. Manual wastegate between and behind the seats. Had incredible brakes for the time. That car always felt like it was about to do something nasty.

The first behind-the-wheel driver's ed I ever had was in a 1975 RSR. It didn't have the seemingly random doubling of thrust midway up the power band that the 930 had, but the ass-end would still pass you on the outside if you got the least little bit timid in a corner. God I miss that car.

And yet we choose to keep pushing. Something America needs to get back into the habit. Get rid of all the restrictions and walk away from full blown electric vehicles. I'd even say let's start getting back into more mechanical cars. I understand computers helps with speed and control but there's something about a pure mechanical car. dad had a 1986 turbo. heavily worked. 3.4l twin plug motor. 468 RWHP. 2580LBS. Thing was an absolute animal. On low boost it would spin its massive tires in 3rd. 1st gear came up so fast once the boost hit it was pretty much useless. it was like picking off tin cans with a slingshot against other cars on the highway... and that turbo sounded so awesome!

I put a stock 3.3L 86' 930 turbo motor in a 83'SC and lightened the car down to roughly 2300lbs. As an ex-intern of Porsche North America's race cars in an engineering program, I tuned the engine and intake to gain a significant gain in torque and hp(about 10%). - 'I am the destroyer of worlds'. I never went looking for trouble, but once pushed up against a wall, that car didn't open up a can of whoop-ass, but a 55-gallon drum of whoop-ass. I have no doubt many a bully on the road will NEVER, ever forget that day of the beat-down.

As a young teen I went to visit my uncle in California who has a 911 SC targa. It may not be a turbo, but it made me a Porsche fan for life. I'm a self confessed adrenaline junkie. I've never owned a 911, but I hope to some day. This is a great video. I've seen several other video's on Porsche 911's and a few said to brake before the corner and then accelerate through it like a front wheel drive car. Thank you.

Braking for the corner is the proper technique for all vehicles. What they're really saying is "it's OK to nail the gas early while you're waiting on the turbo lag". But only with a large single turbo

it took me quite some times to say this, but this video exceptionally captures not just the feelings and emotions of such drivers who drove the car, but also the deadly yet alive characters of the widowmakers all around the industry. quite a personal thing since i liked the viper, which is also mentioned as a widowmaker, and i'm glad you've envisionized their purpose of existence.

My father was the sales manager of a Porsche dealership when I was growing up. When I was 13 years old, I learned how to drive a manual transmission in a brand-new 930, one of the first 930s in the United States. It was Guards Red.

@@the.squidd I didn't burn up the clutch, but it was a VERY intimidating experience. I was VERY clear on the fact that I was driving the fastest car money could buy, that it didn't belong to me, that it was one of the first ones in the U.S., and that it cost more than many people's homes.

To be fair, Porsche's 930 911 Turbo S isn't the first time they created a car way too fast for it's own good... In the late 1960's and early 1970's, Porsche's first foray into proper world-class supercars resulted in the 917... The first prototypes of such had ~600 HP and weighed around 2,000 LBS... And was very unstable at high speeds, of which it could reach up to 220+ MPH on the straights... Former Porsche test drivers have put forward that they recalled the car would wander from one side of the track to the other at 200+ MPH when they held the steering wheel striaght... That's pretty scary, and Porsche had to basically bribe the drivers, because no-one wanted to race in a car that was so unstable...

Yes, all true, but that is only HALF the story. Also the 917 was a pure race car. Never sold for street use. Why are you leaving out the second half of the story ??? Porche FIXED the stability problem by changing aerodynamics, and doubled the anemic 600 hp with the 917-30 which set a record on the Mulsane straight, (which has not been equaled to this day). The 917 10 and then the 917 30 absolutely destroyed any competitors, with the 917-30 passing through 200 mph traffic going another 50 to 70 mph faster than the 200 mph competitors... The pussy officials and people in charge of CAN-AM cancelled the whole series because of the absolute dominance of the 917-30. F---K the people who did that. I would hope if any are alive today, (they would be 80 to 90 + years old) they would read my comment and be offended and upset. I would take joy in that.

The history lesson on the F-104 was interesting. I used to fly with Roscoe Diehl and he was Lockheeds personal test pilot for the F-104. He told me that he personally chewed out Chuck Yeager for crashing one of his Starfighters. He said that if Chuck had more of a brain he would have set his trim tabs to neutral and he could have recovered the plane. But Chuck set the trim full aft based on his experience with straight wing planes. Roscoe says he got away with screaming in the face of Chuck Yeager simply because Chuck was military and Roscoe was a civilian making sure the military doesn't wreck his planes.

Porsche racer Milt Minter (RIP) taught me to drive race cars. In Porsches, his advice was don’t lift in a corner and in a turbo, get it going straight before you pull the trigger. Good advice that has served me well.

I met a guy when looking for a Porsche for my brother. He told me he lost his son when they were driving a 911 turbo. He was selling his last Porsche because the memory was just too painful. The 911 turbo was the king of snap oversteer.

To I be fair TVR just doesn't give a damn. Those cars are monsters. And it's really only the first gen viper that is notoriously dangerous, the rest have TCS, ABS, And i think the last gen had Cruise control. Porsche CGT is a lot more tame than he's making it out to be as well. It's. Mid engine, NA V10 focused on driving experience and not as much speed.

The delayed turbo boost makes sense to me. My 911 Carrera S is faster than this car but its naturally aspirated so the throttle response is almost instantaneous. Can't imagine trying to control it if it was prone to sudden unexpected acceleration.

I just dont understand why it should accelerate when you rather lift off,it took forever to spool when it was planbted and now you lift off and it suddenly decides to accelerate, crazy.

If you knew how to drive it and drove it properly, it was fine. Darwin was directly involved in the engineering of the 930.

4000 rpm is the shift point for all 6 cylinder engines even without a turbo. Waiting for something to happen while you're trying to merge on the motorway is nerve-wracking

When I was a kid in the 80's my well off neighbour had one of these for about 2 weeks before spinning it off the road and completely writing it off. I heard the porshe engineers even added lead weights to the front end to try to stop the pendulum effect when they let go.

I liked the inclusion of the the Starfighter's death toll, especially because it has such a notorious reputation in Germany. If you ever meet a seasoned Luftwaffe veteran, ask them about the Starfighter, there will be stories for a good solid hour.

I had an 86 Iris metallic blue 930 with a built motor and tuned suspension. The car was in beautiful condition. I had done a lot of track experience in mostly BMWs so I had a good amount of high speed conering experience. I took my time getting to know that 930, it was no doubt a harry chested beast. When that Turbo hit it felt you were popping a wheelie, the experience was incredibly raw. I took it to several track events and luckily never stuffed it. I have always taken a sense of pride knowing that I was able to go fast in a car that many others could not or didn't have the nerve too. The reputation is well deserved.

The Starfighter was insane, it had so little lift that it needed an insane speed to lift off. A consequence of this was, that if the landing gear was not retracted within a few seconds of lift off, the air speed would have destroyed it meaning landing it was impossible.

because so many were crashed up there are not many left. also the 911 930 Turbo was available from 1975 to 1989 so I very much doubt that it was 40k AUD new in 1989.

To be fair Pelle Lindbergh's blood alcohol levels were double the legal limit (at the time of his death) or about .20. 911 or not, his odds of death while behind the wheel of any car other then maybe a zamboni were incredibly high.

My grandfather (in Germany) told me that back then they said, if you want to have a starfighter you just need a field, at some point one will crash into it.
