This kind of behaviour by authors has been a problem on Goodreads for over a decade. Any petty author who felt threatened by someone more talented (and usually LGBTQA+ and/or BIPOC) would send their sock puppets and fans to attack and chase their target off social media. Goodreads has done nothing to police this disgusting behavior despite the outcry.

I didn't realise that this issue has been a Goodreads problem... I know that this is commonplace in fanfiction writing circles where a writer gets so jealous and threatened by another author that is in the same fandom that they are in. It's all in an attempt to chase the other author out of the fandom, and potentially even to get them to stop writing altogether. I had no idea that this was a thing that is a commonplace problem on Goodreads, especially by writers.

And I am doing what I can to be better. That being said; even in my worst moments, I wasn't racist and specifically targeting bipoc people. Why? Because that's not me. The fact she did it; YIKES. Spot on. It has been proven in studies that mentally ill people are considerably more likely to be victims than aggressors. It is most certainly not an excuse, and even if you do lash out or make mistakes during an episode- you are still responsible for handling the consequences of your actions and taking accountability when you come back to mental clarity. And no mental health crisis is going to suddenly turn someone into a racist; it just reveals existing bigotry when there's less control capable of hiding it.

I think many people misunderstand racism. Racists don’t feel threatened by other races they hate. They truly think people of other races shouldn’t have the same opportunities or good things that they deserve (DESERVE being the operative word). Doesn’t matter how talented or how hard they may work. This woman wasn’t threatened nor was she anxious. She resented the fact that BIPOC authors merely existed next to her and were succeeding to some degree (I’ve no idea who any of the authors are or if their deals were comparable or better than Cait’s). If she felt threatened, she would have gone after fellow white authors. Her actions were calculated and purposeful. It happens all the time which is why people who claim “Shut up about racism already! It doesn’t exist!” need to sit the hell down. It does. And the most insidious and harmful variety is perpetrated by people like Cait Corrain.

Literary Twitter is the WEIRDEST online space ever. Even though it happened way back in 2019 I'd love to hear you go over the whole incident where dozens of authors (including ones people generally like, like Roxane Gay) absolutely attacked a random student because she made a single comment that YA romance books weren't appropriate content for her college's reading program.
@Jasper_the_baby_bird
@Jasper_the_baby_bird 4 ай бұрын
Honestly, this apology started off better than most I've seen online, although that's not saying much. However, it quickly took a turn for the worse when she portrayed herself as a victim and sought pity by using addiction and mental health issues as excuses. This attempt to deflect blame turned what seemed like a heartfelt apology into another attempt to evade responsibility, completely undermining its sincerity. Nobody enjoys being called out, as it's embarrassing, but facing the consequences is a crucial part of growth. She could gain much more respect by taking ownership of her actions. This incident provides valuable insight into her true character behind closed doors because her apology reveals that this behavior isn't new for her. She exhibited the same behavior the previous year, so it's hard to believe she's genuinely sorry when it was acceptable to her until she got caught. She had already shifted blame to a fictional person named Lily previously, so it's clear that she would have continued down this path if she hadn't been exposed and called out. The apology falls flat because she had already tried to play innocent the first time and blame someone else; now she's just using a different excuse, but it's the same pattern.

Coming in late but there is a thing called ARCs - advanced reader's copy, which are often digital but sometimes print copies publishing give to influencers and other readers to drum interest for those books previous to release, and review them months before they come out. So all those books despite unreleased to the general public, were already in the hands of several readers.

As someone with mental health issues who used to self-medicate with booze...creating a bunch of sock puppet accounts to leave a bunch of bad reviews on fellow authors' (mainly POC ones, too) books to make my own book be more successful sounds more like a calculated plan than something done spur-of-the-moment during a bad episode! Like if I did something like that during a bad episode, the next day I would wake up thinking, "What have I done?"

Right? Less booze on my end but I’ve definitely done things during manic episodes that I had to walk back after (usually deleting risqué tumblr accounts 🙃 but also apologizing to people if I started fights/acted shitty). It sucks and feels awful but it’s literally the least I can do.

This is exactly why I don't believe the mental health excuse here. There's a point you'd realize what you've done and come clean, but she didn't, and she even went ahead to try and craft herself a story with this "Lily" character. This is all premeditated action from a very nasty person, I'm tired of mentally ill people (especially struggling with substance abuse) being thrown under the bus like this.

@@lyswenn Now I'd understand if, say, someone was experiencing a psychotic episode or DID and literally did not know what they were doing. But I don't think that was what was happening in this case. agree with you and freya totally - i think in the author community what they are more concerned about is less the fame of it all and more the money the publisher is willing to spend, which is always talked about as a finite and ever shrinking/stingily handed out resource, and the bigger the marketing budget = the more successful your book is gonna be = the more deals you get = the longer/more likely you are to sustain yourself with your authorly career alone/majority. Still a ridiculous mindset that publishers encourage because they, like most corporations and organisations, are diseased with the same poisonous ideology that capitalism &white supremacy spread everywhere, and encourage cutthroat competition and whine endlessly about budget cuts and profit margins and blah blah money my extra mansion and townhouse and villa and yacht and holidays and blah. i absolutely agree this scarcity mindset is ridiculous, people enjoying a good book if it truly is good will make them want to read more, and authors should celebrate each other and enjoy each other's success. she was clearly motivated by racism, insecurity, jealousy of the publisher's money, and envy of the success of people of colour.

I get that ‘mental health’ has somehow colloquially come to mean mental illness, but it just reinforces the stigma, like mental illness is so horrible to acknowledge we have to refer to it as though its Opposite Day. Screw the stigma. It’s mental illness. I didn’t spend over a year in a psychiatric hospital because of my ‘mental health’. I was very, very ill and continue to treat and monitor it every damn day. So I love your videos so much and I'm from the Caribbean with family who live and grew up in the south. "Alb***o snake" is actually a common slang. And even "snake in the hen house" is a slang used by older American and Caribbean folks (in my island we have calypsos referencing that saying). I think, as a black southern author, Bethany just combined the two of them to create a literary allusion. Basically we know from her wording that the traitor is a white person - someone that slithered in and wrecked havoc before anyone could realize what was going on. Although she most likely did not mean it maliciously, it definitely did have a bad impact. But it begs to question if Bethany's perceived misstep was simply used to derail and deflect from the larger issue.

I'm very active in the writing social media space as someone writing their first book, and I'm blessed to be friends with both tradpub authors and indie authors. Getting review bombed before a book release is SO shitty, and so underhanded. The way online sales work, the algorithm won't recommend your book unless you have reviews. So both tradpub and indie authors send out ARCs (advanced reader copies--free copies of the book) in hopes that people will read and review BEFORE the release date. There are even services, like Booksirens, that authors can pay to add their books to a list that pre-screened ARC readers can access. It's a BIG deal, all to serve the algorithm. If you don't have a backlog of well-reviewed books and your first gets tanked pre-lease, it can seriously damage your career. Pretty much your only option then is to start over with a different pen name.

It can explain your mental state at the time but it does not free you from accountability. Even then at the end of the day you have to own up to your actions. You can’t take back the irreparable damage you have done but you can reflect on your actions, grow from them, and try to make amends where you can. I’ve done things myself in fits of emotional breakdowns that I am not proud of but I own up to my actions, regret them every day, and try to help those I hurt heal from the trauma I caused.

Someone writing a similar genre or similar type of book as someone else can actually be helpful in a sense. This is because similar titles, genres, and plot lines will be RECOMMENDED after buying or finishing a book. She already had deals in the works, had friends in the industry who were writing similar genre stories…she had everything to gain from EVERYONE SUCCEEDING with their debut books. That’s the depth of how petty and racist she really was. There WAS NO COMPETITION. She hated the idea of POC authors doing well SO BADLY she risked and lost her entire career when she didn’t even remotely need to do ANYTHING. No excuses: Cait is just hateful!

I'm glad you commented on a the "snake in the hen house" tweet. A lot of people I see covering this are white, so they defer to her claims that it's southern Black slang and give her a pass. I'm a POC from the south, and while "snake in the hen house" is certainly a well-known phrase, I suspect the "a*****" flavoring was her personal spin to imply whiteness. I've never heard it outside this tweet. But even if it IS a common phrase, that doesn't mean it can't be rooted in ablism. I think it was kind of unfair that Meredith got so much heat for being hurt by the phrase, even though I do also think she was kind of inserting herself into the situation in a way she probably shouldn't have.

It’s not ableism tho, albino snakes literally exist and also she wasn’t referring to any literal albino people and wasn’t talking about the disabilities associated with albinism. She was also probably trying to bypass the censorship that comes on social media when you say the color “white”. Meredith had no right making this about her somehow, I hate when people do that shit and I hate when people on Twitter just ignore the entire concept of context because they’re always foaming at the mouth to cancel someone and get brownie points from the mob. Also with the censoring I straight up thought she said “air-ee-yan” at first and I was gagged cuz that would’ve been absolutely brutal 💀

@PhoenixRoseYT It's still incredibly shitty to use albinism as a general synonym for "white". It's genetic, can effect anyone including BIPOC, and comes with a laundry list of symptoms besides just being too pale. Even if it's a commonly used phrase or euphemism amongst black ppl it's still dumb and unsavory at best, and is still ableism when using it in that manner. She used that word for a reason, it was either a descriptive for someone or ment to be derogatory, otherwise it served no purpose being in the tweet. Meredith had every right to be upset when she saw that. Most people would be upset if they saw their disablity/genetic condition get boiled down too an insult for a certain race/ethnicity of people while being compared to an animal.

@@infinitelyfinite758I disagree. I think your point is low key whitewashing the terms. Way too many times black people have had phrases that mean something specific and then a white person adds a new meaning that’s offensive and then plays victim. Albino snakes are an actually animal and it would make no sense we would talk in masses about albino people specifically when they are so rare. It’s clear what the term means. Stop twisting it.

I think she was completely justified in calling out the use of the phrase "albino snake." It's obvious that the word albino shouldn't be used as an insult. I think her anger is justified, she is allowed to be offended and get defensive at that type of ableist language.

I don't think she should have to apologise; it was ableist to use a disability as an insult. It always is ableist to do that. Sometimes communities have popular racist/ableist/phobic phrases, if that is indeed a popular one, doesn't change it being ableist.

Swoop is literally known to just cause drama and spread drama then act all innocent. She has ended so many careers.. one of my absolute favorite youtubers got destroyed for no reason while she was in the hospital recovering from an issue with her throat which left her unable to speak for a while. What gets irritating is how aggressive communities are lately without looking at all the facts. The odds are you're going to say something at some point that offends SOMEONE.. especially in today's world where everyone's so extremely sensitive. The real question is how it's handled afterwards. If there's a genuine apology people need to quit using it against that person and move on.

I hate review bombing SO much, we see this behaviour in court cases too (with many expert witnesses getting their businesses negatively reviewed by random internet trolls). The fact that in this case the assailant also targeted BIPOC is fkn disgusting. She is the find out stage of FAAFO.

I'm new to this scandal, so I don't know if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but having worked in publishing for a bit, I had to mention that advance copies could allow for people to read books before they are officially released. That doesn't seem to be the case in this situation, but it does seem worth mentioning for people who might be wondering why books that haven't been released yet are even allowed to be reviewed on the site.

reads with rachel goes in more depth about this case. I noticed the ARC thing here too. I think someone said that these authors were keeping track of their ARCs like maybe there weren't that many out there so unfamiliar names would have been suspicious.

Thank you so much for how you handled this. Saying that a mental breakdown and drinking and mental health crisis can and maybe did happen yet not allowing it to stand as a justification. I’ve made some damn bad decisions that sure were mistakes and sure I could blame them on a variety of things but ultimately it was my own actions. And I have had and occasionally do still have mental breakdowns. Do I regret them? Of course. Did it cause me to spend multiple hours meticulously campaigning to ruin other potential rivals careers? Heck no. There was just something… so inexplicably KIND about the was you put it… it was firm and wholly holding her accountable but you weren’t excluding event just the possibility that those things influenced her - as it could influence and/or trigger those hearing this story. I know you put a LOT of work and care and attention into how you word and craft your sentences and I just wanted to show appreciation for it. It really makes a difference.

As someone who was a functioning alcoholic just a year ago, I can confirm that some people, while being under the influence of alcohol can be very calculating and manipulate the shit out of all situations. With that being said. You have to feel that on the inside to be able to do anything calculating. You have to feel angry, jealous, and hatred. I admit that when I was drunk and drinking all the time, I was nothing but anger and depression and it came out the most when I drank. I would do things, and then when I was sober when I didn't remember, I lied, and I spun so many webs I choked myself from the nuse of lies I tangled myself in. If she is serious about getting clean, that's great, but she has gone down a hateful path, that no one is going to forget anytime soon, and she will have to live a sober life with that knowledge.

(Swoop! Your HAIR IS SO FABULOUS I love the lavender!!!!!) as someone who uses goodreads RELIGIOUSLY, this situation was so horrific and embarrassing. There’s no excuse for racism. Period. (Also, will ABSOLUTELY be reading all of the books mentioned that were slandered, they genuinely all sound fascinating!)

Nicely done, Swoop. Let me tell you how well her mental health and drinking alcohol excuses went in the author community on Facebook. Not good. Not good at all. And sincerely, thank you so much for sharing the other authors’ glorious books! The author community is full of wonderful people who uplift, encourage, and do what they can (where they can) to help one another. What Cait did was disgusting and inexcusable. Again, you covered this so well.
