Thomas Tuchel had a season like no other in 2020/21. He won the Champions League with Chelsea just 6 months after being fired by PSG. The triumph marked the latest highlight in Tuchel's glittering career. But his road to the top has been bumpy to say the least. While his tactical genius has brought him success at Mainz, Dortmund, PSG and now in London, he has also fallen out spectacularly with various people at those clubs, with one former player even calling him a "dictator." Kick off! looks back at Tuchel's development from bartender to coaching mastermind.

As someone growing up in Mainz and living with this Club since I was a little child, this video perfectly shows, what Tuchel did to a broken Team like Mainz 05. If I think back, the athmosphere, the energy and the team spirit were unbelievable. I've never seen this much football enthusiasm in Mainz, than back in 2009-2012.

@@ktkee7161 The relationship with Tuchel and Mainz got worse by time, because as the video mentioned, Tuchel is a difficult guy. Nevertheless, Mainz had sucess with him. He wasnt nearly as close to the fans as Klopp was, which just isnt the person Mainz supporters wanted to have. If you grew up in Mainz then you know what you’ve said is utter lies. That club was built from 2001 onwards, they were in the second tier of German football staring at relegation, gave Klopp the job, he won 6 of his first 7 games and they avoided relegation, 2 seasons later he gets them to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history. They had the smallest budget, stadium and wage budget in the Bundesliga yet finished 11th that first season. They finished 11th the following season as well and also qualified for the UEFA cup being knocked out by the eventual winners. Tuchel joined Mainz straight after Klopp left for Dortmund so already had Mainz best ever squad in their history to work with, just like the rest of his career, walking into a club already built by someone else and taking credit for that.

Tuchel is an excellent coach. This video overstates by portraying him as a genius with so-called innovations and playing different formations with different players. Different players have different strengths and weaknesses, so of course you use them accordingly; not rocket science. His Achilles heel, though, is that he plays favorites with players . If he can control his urge to play players based on how much he gets on with them, whether or not they’ll bow down to his strong-arm tactics with players. Watch who sits for Chelsea and you’ll understand those are the players who will stand up to him for not treating them as people, rather than as a dictator.

The squad is full of extremely intelligent and experienced professionals who are dedicated to winning and discipline (Azpi, Kante, Marcos, Jorginho, Thiago, Ruediger, Mount, etc.) and they are a perfect fit for a demanding and methodical coach like Tuchel. Frank Lampard was definitely necessary for when the club when we had our transfer ban, bring in some new blood like Mason Mount, Tomori, Abraham, James but it was clear that Frank when he bought in new players he was going to struggle as they were players who needed a manager who knew their abilities, and plus our defensive record wasn't great, we always had a great defence in the past, Tommy Tuchels priority in making sure we do well defensively was genius, won us the Champions League which at start we wasn't even favourites, then following start looking improving the goals

His comment at 5.40 mins. is spot on. It should be framed and put up in every professional and grassroot football club. No player is above the team. If a player only plays in his own bubble the team suffers. Egos, solo artists and show ponies will get you followers on silly social media platforms, but they are the death of team sports. There are 11 players on the field. If you don't work for each other you won't have success. Kudos to Tuchel for sticking that to one of his players, whoever it was.

It looks to me like he finally hit his coaching prime so to speak. He matured. Because he was always this genius, calculating everything perfectly and so competitive that that fire burned him multiple times but now you can see that he honestly developed amazing human qualities and characteristics. Because the first thing I told my friends when I saw him at Chelsea (didn't follow him much as a person prior to, only his games and results) that Tuchel seems to me like a great pedagogist and he knows how to cater to any type of player and draw the best out of them. You can see it by his comments from the start "it's my fault Ziyech is not playing often even tho he is a great player" etc. etc. He knows now how to make everyone comfortable, develop good relationships, understanding as well as making players want to kill and die on that pitch for him. We've bought a golden ticket as a club and Chelsea fans. I couldn't be more happier, this is a dream and long may it continue!

tbh I kinda agree on what you're saying but it also comes with some positive and negative perks with him joining Chelsea. Chelsea have the tendency to terminate contracts of managers like it is nobody's business... we've seen that in previous managers. You can claim it as "ambitious club" "hunger to win trophies"... but sometimes it is never about that. You get to lose the touch or the identity to become a " big" club... They can become the best club for a season or two, but a big club is very different. You can clearly see that in Manchester United Fergie Era, He laid the foundation so strong that even in the bad times and not winning trophies era they're still a big club, not the best club but they do have that Identity in them... but modern day football has changed a lot but I wouldn't be surprised in a season or two he'll be gone with players turning their backs or fallout with the owners.

Watching this today after Chelsea have inexplicably fired Tuchel is SO BIZARRE! He has won Chelsea a Champion's League, kept them in the top 4 with no indications he'd drop out of it and in just the last 6 months he has taken Chelsea to the Carabao Cup Final AND the FA Cup Final losing both on Penalties (which everybody knows is the same as the flip of a coin) against Liverpool who were the best team in the world during 21/22! And as of his firing he's only 5 points off the top of the EPL Table after an incredibly messy last year in the Management/Business Side of Chelsea where he had to take over multiple responsibilities that normally the Manager would never have to go near but he did anyway because that's the kind of hard working, relentless manager he is. Oh and Chelsea JUST moved out OVER A DOZEN PLAYERS IN ONE WINDOW and then BROUGHT IN a Quarter of a Billion POUNDS! Not Euros or Dollars POUNDS! On LITERALLY A DOZEN NEW PLAYERS who will ALL need to be bedded in to the team and assessed and experimented with to see who works best in what positions, who has the best chemistry and what combinations work against specific opposition setups & players, etc, etc, which is JUST in itself without ANY DOUBT the BIGGEST undertaking EVER by a Manager in a Single Transfer Window by a Top 6 EPL Team who has been and is expecting to continue to contend in every competition. And the new regime in charge of Chelsea decided that after JUST 6 games into the new season, with all these new players which one can only assume were picked and chosen BY TUCHEL to play in HIS VERY UNIQUE STYLE, in which Chelsea had shown various Highs and Lows as one would expect from literally every manager ever whether they were Tuchel, Ferguson or Cruyff. That SOMEHOW a sample size of 6 games was in the minds of the New Regime MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME for Tuchel to have sorted things out and to be winning every game convincingly from here on out... And so Tuchel having failed to deliver the results they are absurdly demanding of him they have chosen to FIRE a Manager who is at his best a Top 5 Manager in World Football! An EXTRAORDINARILY VALUABLE COMMODITY that in the past 15 or so years in particular we have learned has a greater impact on a teams chances of winning than even a Ballon d'Or Winner! And Chelsea KNOWING THIS, AND knowing they just spent £250m on Players that, again, were presumably picked by and for Tuchel and his play style, have FIRED a Top 5 Manager in World Football AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A CONFIRMED REPLACEMENT WHEN THEY DID IT!!! THEY'RE F"C£ING WINGING IT! Only NOW have discussions with Brighton's Manager Graham Potter taken place and has he been confirmed for the job... You heard that right, they fired a Top 5 Manager in World Football, a guy 95% of all teams would KILL to get, ESPECIALLY with ALL of his VERY RECENT successes with Chelsea FC and after conducting a short search they have decided to replace him with Graham Potter from Brighton. A Top 10 Premier League Manager... Pure Lunacy. I don't think it's crazy to say they might miss out on the Top 4 as a result of letting go of Tuchel.

Sure and verdict will be 'He is' Nothing to take away from other great managers in the world, Tuchel actually shows level last year or so at Chelsea. Even it took Kloop 3-4 years at Liverpool for their 6th CL while he did in 4 month. Manager of the year for a reason. Absolute genius.

And this is why he's at my club. He works perfectly under pressure and he's a perfectionist. A Chelsea job is a pressure job because we demand success everytime and Tuchel also demands success from his team everytime and we want to win it all. We simply can't rest! We want to stay atop forever! Blues for life!!!

@@radarinfinite1032 If you compare players from Chelsea to PSG they are totally different. You cant compare Kante with a Neymar or a Rudiger with a Kimpembe or Ziyech with Wijnaldum or Herrera. There personality are different and all those players of PSG are really dickheads. They think they run the world.

@@paulcasey6759 it's not like he had Chelsea in the early rounds. He got lucky to get a drilled team with a good defensive spine and got to play city. A team with no variation and a genius and madmen of a manager. If they played any other team they would've struggled.

I think the part about working in tight spaces in a training situation. That's how players develop better decision making and can get the minutia of the game in their favour
