Indonesia ranks as one of the world's biggest contributors to ocean plastics, many of which come from rivers. The local nonprofit Sungai Watch saves about 3 metric tons of trash from entering the ocean every day with simple barriers and manual labor. We visited the island of Bali to meet the three young siblings behind the nonprofit and learn why a tropical paradise has a huge trash problem.

When I was in Bali in 2007, a woman was dumping foam pear-protecting sheaths into the storm drain. I said "You know that drains to the ocean, yes". "Yes, I know!" she replied with a smile. A few days later I was on a ferry to Lombok. A father with his young kids were picking aluminum and plastic out of the garbage cans. "Recycling!" I thought. "What a good father!". Then I watched him throw the bottles and cans overboard, just so his small children could watch them float away. There is no fixing this without fixing the culture.

I studied industrial design and engineering specialising in innovation and there was a total of about 20 minutes on 'Cradle to grave' design, which means to know where it goes in the end so you design with that in mind, universities and schools NEED to embed this thought process throughout teaching anything in relation to product creation, it is not the individual who buys the products whole responsibility, it is totally on the designers and companies who ignore the end of their products life.

It does not matter what you design if one upper management member will say use the cheaper shitty material because it brings more profit. They will do that and than that is it, off it goes to the landfill.
@Sophia-uc9qh
@Sophia-uc9qh 27 күн бұрын
@@sipati2 However, if designers shift away from using plastic in their designs, the designs presented to management will feature fewer plastic options. Instead, they will include more efficient designs that save money through better shapes causing better transport costs (for example), making plastic no longer the cheaper option.

Their story is one of many inspirational ones on this series so BI, please keep up the good work showing other organisations good work. I bought a pair of Indosole flipflops after seeing the video on reusing old car tyres. I must say they are by far the best flip flops I have had in terms of comfort, and durability, the ones I got look classy too. I liked the blend of the company using recycled materials combined with ethical labour practices combined with the fact it is made in Indonesia. On holiday in Oman I ended up the flipflops instead of shoes/ boots to walk many Kilometres a day and didn't get any blisters. I even abseiled down a waterfall with them (not a smart move I know, but I didn't have any other footwear with me that I wanted to get wet).

Have government policy of setting alternative packaging aside from plastic, educate people about harmful effects of plastic wastes so they can be more conscious about using it.

When you have a three seater , a two seater pluss a chair you make a manual for assembly than flatpack it like Ikea and start shipping it to other countries.❤ If these solutions you make for your company is 100% recycled materials you could make a big market providing pots, gardetools were you use the wood you find as handles.

Woooow bravo ,well done. In the same time It’s so ironic, why always foreigners/ westerners more pay attention to take initiated with genial ideas and solutions how to take care of the nature from polluted of the rubbish . Where are the local governments and well educated people to contribute to their own country? It so shame isn’t it. Again well done guys and keep going. Greeting from Scandinavian
