Considering, how easily US Government was able to restrict a Chinese company would be a pretty big wake up call for both Chinese Government and Chinese companies. I predict that in the coming times, Chinese companies would spend ridiculous amount of money to become self-reliant with much generous helps from Chinese government. We could very well expect a Chinese equivalent of TSMC very soon.

@@SirFaceFone The nature of semiconductor manufacturer is inherently winner takes all. SMIC needs revenue to have R&D budget, but very few companies gave SMIC a try because they were more expensive and inferior. Even Chinese companies didn't give SMIC business -- less than 2 percent of Chinese chips manufacturing went to SMIC in 2018. Now with Huawei ban, Chinese company started to realize that it's actually a good idea to feed domestic foundry, who knows what's going to happen. Also, SMIC is not as behind as people in think it is. It's at most 3-5 years behind and Moore's law is approach its physical limit. The most state-of-the-art manufacturing is 7nm but in terms of market share, 7nm is less 1/3, with 14nm + still is majority marketshare. SMIC is currently finalizing 14nm, with 7nm in development.

Very soon? So years or even decades of R&D mean nothing? People always assume money solves everything. China relies so much on export so being “self reliant” is just wishful thinking. You are also talking as if the Chinese government hasn’t been protecting those Chinese companies. Companies like Huawei are basically state owned.

Little Chemie The new blackberries failed because they were absurdly overpriced. I had one, and I didn’t buy it because of nostalgia (I’m 17, and I didn’t even know basically anything about blackberry before it...) and I loved it (especially the keyboard btw), but not for that much money... They failed because of poor marketing and pricing. People should try them before stating something like this😅 (I mean, I know that not everyone likes those physical keyboards but a lot of people do, and they will never try one, that way...)

I get what you mean, but you HAVE to admit that the amount for people who think like you are small, and the market for such a product would be limited. Most people now are used to software keyboards, not to mention autocorrect allows for faster typing, even if you make a few errors they'll just get fixed, maybe 10 years ago this idea would fly. Not to mention that the smartphone market is a ferocious thing, most small phone manufacturers are having a hard time competing with the big ones. I doubt blackberry will see much success from this endeavor, more likely they'll just waddle around mediocrity like they've been for the past 8 years.

imo BlackBerry will fail again. There are tens of chinese with cheap, quality products so BB has to compete with them they also famous for not understanding users. a phone with keyboard is not what we want. maybe the brand enthusiasts will buy a few 100k but that's not enough on the long run (why would you want phone that's big but half of it can be used only for typing) also virtual keyboards ar pretty decent now the bb brand is not synonyms with quality anymore but obsolity and mess ups

I just think its so sad with this hole thing with Huawei, not just because I use one of there flagship phones from 2019 ,and the fact that they have, in my opinion a quick top of the line support, but they are as a tech-company very important to this ecosystem ! Its like killing of an entire specie and thinking it will be fine ! So I'm pretty bummed about this hole thing and I really hope that huawei comes up with something that is sustainable, or hoping that the ban will somehow be lightened up, or defunct all together if Biden takes office.

So after this . They can't even make an image sensor as good as earlier as now sony is not there. Memory is gone as ram and storage Samsung and others are mainly Chinese and Japanese that trump with some rules will ban. So basically Huawei need to make everything from scratch other then the production processes and battery. Or Stop selling outside and just reverse engineer everything if that can even be possible to make a good phone by doing that in less then a year. Forget mobile there whole buisness is gone as chip will be very important for them

EXCEPT that HMD is located just opposite to the original NOKIA headquarters in FINLAND and the majority of Nokia employees work there. So NOPE, they aren't similar. Hmd has way more credibility than onwards mobility.

why do companies like mediatek even have to oblige to the us orders? what's gonna happen if they don't? also mediatek chips don't entirely use us techs as far as I know as arm is an uk company

Mediatek uses US technology (read: patent), so if they dont oblige, Mediatek might possibly couldnt make any chips at all
