The Train Story

Жыл бұрын

A tilting train is a train that has a tilt-mechanism that enables increased speed on regular rail tracks. When a train or any other vehicle rounds a curve at speed, objects inside the vehicle experience centrifugal force that can cause objects to slide about, standing passengers to lose their balance and seated passengers to feel squashed by armrests. Tilting trains counteract this by tilting towards the inside of the bend and compensate for the g-force. The train may have a passive tilt where inertial forces cause the tilt or it may have a active tilt where onboard computers actively control electric or hydraulic tilt-actuating mechanisms.
In this video, using the Class 390 Pendolino as a demonstrating example, I explain the active tilting in trains.

Not many people say this enough, but thank you for actually putting on subtitles, and not making us suffer from the live autogenerated one!

@@TheTrainStory I came to this video after reading a news that India is planning to introduce tilting trains under "vande bharat" category.

@@TLH11_23 I had discussed this with Mr Sudhanshu Mani. According to him this is still only at planning, no firm decision on the matter. In any case the VB cannot be made tilting, that will require an entirely reengineered train set particularly with respect to clearances

Not quite right. The APT-E and the APT-P's maximum active tilt was 9 degrees, a with a further 3 degrees of passive tilt to take account of point and crossing work and other track irregularities. In addition, BR did NOT sell its tilt technology to FIAT, the control systems and actuation are totally different with both systems, FIAT having developed their Pendolino system independently of BR but at around the same time frame. BR did give the high stability wheel/rail profile and suspension systems to FIAT though, along with all other railways worldwide, and made no charge for the use of the technology.

Interesting, Vande bharat trains are planning to use this tilting technology to increase top speeds but they will probably use talgo trains' version of tilting technology.

As per Mr Sudhanshu Mani's many videos there are no plans to introduce tilting technology to the Vandebharat trains. There are plans to upgrade to 200 kmph when the track infrastructure is in place. But my opinion is Tilting trains can improve speeds by 20-25% and should be introduced in India

@TheTrainStory
@TheTrainStory Жыл бұрын
@@SaiPraneethMullapudi if the Hon’ble Minister has said than it is a very good development. However, I don’t think the existing rake will lend itself to tilting technology. The dimensions will have to be changed to allow clearances while the tilt is in action. The Minister may have used the Vande Bharat terminology, but being an engineer himself, he must be aware that tilting tech would require an entirely new trainset to be designed and built.

Good video but it would be nice if you could also list speeds in kilometres per hour. The vast majority of the world uses km/h, not mp/h.

You should correct the "kmph" in the km/h, as you wouldn't want to see "m/h" instead of mph. It's not just a bad abbreviation, but a disrespect of a metric system.

This the worst idea in the history of mass transit. It's stupid, it solves no problem, it only stresses out the passengers. There is no other point to it. That's why they designed it.
