What you did is amazing! I never knew about using a string for perspective. I’m a very amateur drawer painter chalk dad with a 7 year old who loves to do it to. I can’t wait to try and do this whit her this coming summer. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve always been fascinated with 3-D art, and I would love to start learning how to do the chalk drawings on the pavement. Thank you for this tutorial, and I look forward to practicing and learning how to do this. I do black light, chalk drawings and communicate biblical messages and I think this could be a great way to do the same.

Nice work. Thank you for sharing. Question. Will it be washed-out when rain? Do you seal it. ? Would it be better to use Exterior paint? Thanks again.
@TracyLeeStum
@TracyLeeStum 3 жыл бұрын
If created with chalk pastels, yes it will be washed away with rain. There really is no full proof way to save it if made with pastels. And yes, we often use latex paint to create permanent pieces. No need to seal it with good quality paint. Good luck!

That's awesome! How much does the viewers height effect the illusion? Say you drew it so it looked good to you, would a person a foot taller or shorter get a worse experience? Thanks for the tutorial
@TracyLeeStum
@TracyLeeStum 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the great question! The height does effect the viewing result. If the viewer is much taller I have them step back about a foot, if shorter I have them move forward. Most images are designed at a viewing point of 5' high - as this fits a majority of the population, and the distance change for height variations is minimal.

Hi Richard, The large sticks of pastel are available through Eternity Arts, link included. They are hand-made batches of pastels and work beautifully on asphalt and pavement for blending and large color areas; and are inexpensive! Good luck! www.eternityarts.com/chalk-drawing-supplies/basic-chalk-by-stick/

I still have trouble understanding. It's beautiful but I can't how the string thing works.
@TracyLeeStum
@TracyLeeStum 2 жыл бұрын
Hey John, the string is a device that we use to create our vertical lines. I know it seems odd but the vertical lines have to do with how the camera foreshortens the image. I draw all vertical lines (for the most part) so they converge back at my viewing point. When you view it through the camera lens it appears to not be converging at the viewpoint, but more spaced out as we'd see it in real life. The camera sees the perspective of the ground, so that makes those diagonal vertical lines appear correct. Wish I could show you in person - in this case a picture is worth a thousand words!

Hello and thanks for the video! Can acrylic paint be used, since the rain will not wash it off that easily unless soap or other cleaning agent is used? Thanks in advance for your answer!
@TracyLeeStum
@TracyLeeStum 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use acrylic paint for a more permanent painting. I add a small amount of liquid dish soap to the paint before applying, which helps remove it more easily. (Ratio is 1/4 cup to 1 gallon of paint) You can also apply a layer of clear gesso first (with some soap added) as a primer to the paint.

Would it be possible to project a sketch from the viewing point to get the same 3d effect? Or would that cause too much distortion?
@TracyLeeStum
@TracyLeeStum 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, in fact many 3D artists working today use the projection method. It works well & saves time. There may be some slight distortion around the edges but those can be adjusted by hand as you view through your camera lens. I recommend using a short throw projector.
