In this 3D modeling tutorial we will design the nose of the model airplane we have been designing. This tutorial builds on all of the previous episodes and we start to see our model plane coming together.
⚠️ This 3D modeling series is intended for RC airplane modelers who want to create their own parts using CNC, Laser, or Foam Cutter to construct their own scratch built planes.
This is a much more advanced tutorial and relies heavily on modeling using the Fusion 360 sketch tool, projection, and Intersect. We will also use the loft tool in concert with our completed sketch. Please be patient with yourself as you work through this tutorial, it will be a bit of a challenge for some, others will breeze right through.
Thank you to all of the aerospace engineers, aerodynamics engineers, AV geeks, and fellow hobbyist who've been commenting and providing helpful insights and feedback!
If you are getting value from these videos, consider visiting my tip-jar. Any contribution enters you to win the tri-jet airliner kit. See website for details. www.rccad2vr.com/tip-jar

@@RCCAD2VR For some reason, over the years I got into the habbit of mostly working with solid bodies and then using combine-->intersect to trim away the excess material. Often enough I had to recreate some parts that I have just thrown out with the intersect command. Your videos (on the wing) made me realise that I should better use a surface and a cut like you did. That way I still get to decide if I can still do something usefull with the leftovers.

@@RCCAD2VR Not sure if someone mentioned it already: Your hack with the "box" to create a construction plane on a spline node is creative and it works fine, but you might as well go : Construction --> OffsetPlane --> Pick a plane from the origin triade --> select "To object" in the "Extent" dropdown. Now you can select the node directly :-) Thanks again for your beautiful work!

Thanks for the positive feedback and compliment. I'm trying my very best to make the highest quality videos for fellow aviation and RC fans! Like most software tools, there's usually more than one way to get to the same result. Thanks for this tutorial. I only wish I were 50 years younger, seems my learning curve has changed dramatically. I have a pet project which has defies my abilities as a modeler ... despite several attempts . Ever see a protype plane and say to yourself I'm going to build a model of that.?. Well over 40 years ago I did. Raising 6 kids took a bit of work so hobbies were put on the shelf. Then this project met up with retirement , kids grown . A trip to revisit this plane and photograph all the details. WPAFB, home too so many aircraft, many of which I had modeled either static or R/C , but my subject was missing, I ask a guide where it was he took me to the spot I had already visited, he looked puzzled and call another gentleman, who insisted it was right here and pointed to a bare section of hanger, his jaw dropped. Well the wife was becoming testy , let us say, i looked to the gentleman for some answer, digital camera in hand 9 thousand possible pictures to be taken... they could not find the plane ...but assured me it had been in that spot the day before. To move the plane over night would have required moving a dozen large aircraft, then putting them all back in the same place.?.Well having a sense of humor I posted on line the USAF had lost a prototype plane ... Got a very angry email from the USAF....Why they were mad I'm not sure .... they assured me the plane was out for touch up paint , I thanked them for the response. 7 years latter I enquired as to the planes status....out for paint....online I quipted that had I known it would take so long, that I had some brushes in the shed and would ha e helped ... status the next day. In storage to never be seen again. So 64-12200 is gone, the few photos and pdf files I had would have to do ... but I got old lol

Dear Terrance, thank you for this 3D tutorial in Fusion 360. Up to now, I had no glue of 3D designing. Your presentation will help me to create my own RC airplane, at least I hope so. I was always wondering how people did their nice scale RC jets and where they did get the 3D data to produce it. I seems time consuming but it also looks semi professional to work in 3D, with 3D printer for the moulds and CAD tools for cutting the rips and other pieces from plywood or balsa. The Ramy RC channel is also very interesting on how to build the fuselage and wings using this kind of data. Please go on with your channel, it is really good in teaching 3D construction for beginners.

Hello! You deserve way more views and subscribers, man... Your video production and CAD tutorials are extremely well done! It will be very interesting to see how this come together (I'm now subscribed). I have a question. I've seen alot of other people build RC planes using ribs and formers similar to this but I get the feeling they rarely are able to get a smooth skin afterwards. It seems to be pretty common to wrap the frame with thin plastic wrap but you don't get a very smooth skin doing that. What's your plan in regards to the skin? Just curious. Thanks for sharing your work!

Hello Mike! 👋 Thank you for the vote of confidence on the channel! I dunno if I am playing the KZfaq game right, just making videos for folks in the hobby or interested in getting into the hobby. This plan will be covered in balsa sheets and planks, sanded and then fiberglassed, sanded some more, then painted. The wings I may do with fiberglass or carbon fiber sheets. The jury is still out on that one. The nose and empennage will most likely be preformed composites due to the complex and compound curves in those areas. The goal is to make it look just like a full size airliner. The plastic wrap just wouldn't look right for this model as you noted. Fingers crossed it all works out as planned. Welcome to the channel!

Hello Richard. Thank for the feedback. Happy to hear the videos have been helpful. I'm not familiar with creating an offset plane to object and have looked and can't find find that. Would you mind pointing it out. May be helpful in a future video. I used the box "hack" because it's a quick and dirty way to get a sketch started from any of the 3 axis planes and guarantee a perfect intersection. I've tried other methods and they end up being fiddly.

@@RCCAD2VR Hi Tereance. 1st off click on construct offset plane, this will bring up another box. this has plane and below that a box with extent. to the right hand side of the box is a pull down tick. click on that and you will have the choice between distance or below that is to object. if you want to offset from one of the origin planes you do not even have to zoom out if you are close to where you want the plane. simply choose the plane from your tree on left, then hover your pointer over a node which are at the end of all lines and normally 4 around circles and click on it and you should have your plane. let me know if this has explained it. ive modelled my 6ft A10 for a 80mmEDF but what i need to now know is how do you separate the parts into individual parts for laser cutting. Hopefully you will be doing a video of this soon. regards Rich

The Skyhawk will be a very fun build. The diagrams that I used I acquired from searches online. There are many services out there that make them available, I found this one on Blueprintbox blueprintbox.com/details.php?image_id=24837 It's not the highest quality, but a good starting point. Drawing Database is another one drawingdatabase.com/cessna-172-skyhawk/ -- Keep in mind, you will want to use an image editor to crop each view to the very edges, this will help ensure symmetry. Hopefully that helps you. Cheers!

Hi Terrance, absolute awesome videos!!! I have one Problem: when you doing the hack with the box to create a construction-plan (at 19:24): I can't connect the first point of the box to the point of the spline at the beginning of the window. Where is my mistake?

I tried using the hack method using the box tool to create a work plane for curiosity as I hadn't seen this before. How are you snapping to the spline node? The primitive tools on my system doesn't seem to allow me to do that. Messed around with selection methods with no luck. Thanks for your great tutorials!

I had the same issue and I found that if you create a regular sketch you can snap to the point and extrude that sketch to then create the construction plane from instead of the box as shown in the video. You may need to also project the point onto this new sketch before drawing the rectangle to extrude. Hopefully this helps you, if you haven't already figured out a work around.

@RCCAD2VR
@RCCAD2VR 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. At 13:40 I add a flat line for the center line of the cockpit window. You need to add straight lines at the base (XY axis) and top of the windows instead of the curved line as I did in the video. then connect the points with straight lines between the top of the window and bottom. It's hard to explain in text, but I hope this leads you in the right direction.

When you create the contour of the nose, you make new sketches for each line segment. Why? (I would think that it saves time / less clutter to do all lines in a single sketch) Do you keep al sketches around? or do you delete them once they are no longer necessary? Same question for planes, do you delete these?
@RCCAD2VR
@RCCAD2VR 3 жыл бұрын
Hello -- Before recording this video I spent a lot of time testing different methods. I landed on the methods demonstrated in this video because it consistently produced the same outcome without issues. The single line method created several issues with lofting, and did not work every time and was prone to errors. My goal is to make sure the audience can get result with the least amount of difficulty. There is nothing preventing anyone from giving a single line method a go if it works. Since this is not being designed in Parametric mode, keeping the sketches isn't necessary. I tend to keep them if I need to make changes. The planes I tend delete, since they are single use.

How'd it end up working for you?
@r123ingelderland6
@r123ingelderland6 3 жыл бұрын
@@RCCAD2VR It did work, but you have to be very careful of keeping track of all the project/intersect points you need. There is less clutter in the sense that there are fewer sketches to keep track of. But the complexity of the single sketch started interfering with later work because a sketch can only be enabled/disabled as a whole. So whenever the sketch is needed, the viewport becomes very cluttered. So while I have not done so yet, I will be restarting again and keep those sketches that intersect a lot of other sketches as simple as possible. Probably a single line per sketch. Learning by running into walls I call it ;-)

Hi, Sorry to hear you are having trouble getting your splines to tangent. This and the Tail section is tricky because they require all splines and node to line up perfectly. It is one of the most frustrating parts of designing in Fusion. I have also lost countless hours getting sketches to work as I need them. The first thing that comes to mind on the tangency is that the sketch you are working on is not aligned (on the same plane) as the spline you are wanting to make a tangency from. Unfortunately, this is going to be a good bit of trial and error. Just make sure that your nodes all intersect perfectly.

@RCCAD2VR
@RCCAD2VR 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, Yes, the entire series is done in Direct Modeling mode for several reasons. Mainly because the timeline can become a huge mess of missing references for someone who is just trying to get started with CAD and F360. Creating, deleting, recreating components, all very common in the beginning can turn the timeline into a confusing and frustrating experience. Also, there are features used in this tutorial series that are inaccessible in parametric design mode. For example pivoting construction planes, which was used in the wing tutorials. It's also important to note that we're not modeling anything to exacting specifications, and working more free flow. I want to make sure that modelers of all experience levels can freely make mistakes and changes without too much struggle. Parametric design is AMAZING and completely worth using, but for this series I felt direct modeling would be the best way to start. Cheers!

Ah yes, I know that error well. That means your rail has a hard, or sharp bend in it. You need to look up close on your sketch and find the problem. Fusion isn't the greatest at telling you where, so you'll have to hunt for it. But I can confidently say, you added a hard bend somewhere. In the past, when I couldn't solve the problem, I would start over and re-sketch that area and that usually solves the issue.

Just to clear it up is there a reason you are making every single difference line in a separate sketch? As opposed to a single sketch. It doesn't make much sense to me. You can get rid of all the projections and on a separate point anyone watching this you really should have design history turned on. It is a very powerful tool in its own right.
@RCCAD2VR
@RCCAD2VR 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon. Thanks for the feedback. You are certainly correct, this could have been done in a single sketch, however, that requires working in 3D sketch and it is very fiddly and hard grasp for someone who is new to F360. I tried doing instruction using that method and it just added too many instructional problems. So I opted for the method demonstrated. As for the parametric modeling mode (Design History) This was also left off to enable features that are not available when in parametric modeling mode, while preparing for this series the timeline can quickly become a mess if you make a few to many mistakes and would require establishing parametric fundamentals. For the purpose of this series I went with the more cumbersome route to help ensure a less experienced person can follow along with fewer software prowess hurdles. As with all design software, there are 101 ways to get to the same place, this just happens to be how I chose to go about it. Cheers!
