Nice tutorial. Thanks! I've been doing this for a while and never heard of Terrain.Party. Very cool. It makes the workflow much easier when you have an already repaired png file to work with as their "combined" image is. Simplify3D (not a free slicer) has the ability to create a 3d.stl file from an image file so the workflow can be even simpler with that. I do like being able to control the detail in Blender.

Thanks for that - I've already got simplify, so am about about to make a comparison mountain. Simplify certainly simplifies the process - as you just choose the height you want between black and white. I'd love to know if there's a mechanism to generate this value from the source data for accurate topology. e.g. "in 10km square you exported, the variance in height is 1km, so if you print a tile at 10x10 cm, the difference between highest and lowest is 1cm (I think my maths is right there..)

I wonder if there is enough data out there to do the benthology of one of the great lakes or even parts of the oceans. Making the base of a mountain model start at mean sea level, even if the printed model is set on a carefully measured riser, would provide good information provided that the topography is to scale. Mount Katahdin set beside the two Front Range peaks of the same scale would make for some very interesting comparisons.

Late, but go into Fusion 360, extrude a block larger than your terrain, move your terrain inside your block, go to Modify > Combine > Select both bodies > Operation: Cut > OK. Flip the model over so it can print without supports and export it as an STL. Then you can scale it how you want in your slicer.

One more detail, despite your efforts, Fusion 360, has another hidden setting in preferences wherein MESH we must uncheck the box for TRIANGULATE MESH POLYGONS!! Also in my current version of RECAP (no memento, no recap photo, no shenanigans, etc), I'm only allowed to export with 20k faces wherein another instructor video, what's with that? I see the guy exporting the same model with a higher face count of 25k with the possibility of up to a 100k!! I hope this helps someone because it is mighty frustrating, and again thank you for sharing.

useful but not really "scientific accurate" since you'll end up with different scales: one for the x and y axis and one for the height of the model (you adjust the height not by setting "this peack is 3000ft and that one 4000ft" or by setting "this shade of gray equal Xft height") i'm looking for an accurate way to translate the gis Info to a 3d model, does someone know how to do that? I study architecture and i need to print accurate models Thanks!!!

I think I've bit off more than I can chew when attempting to re-purpose your great tutorial. I have a CNC router table an I was attempting to get a heightmap grab of something interesting like Hawaii. Well, after getting all the way to Fusion 360 successfully, I am now stumped as to how to get the triangle face count down. I was originally at 2 million and cut it 850k. Fusion wants 10k... Hawaii looks like garbage at 10k. Do you have any experience with or know anyone who has experience with getting high-poly maps down to a reasonable amount? The only idea I have is attempting segment the area into multiple parts. If I could get it down to 500k faces that still would be 50 segments. There has to be a better solution that my lack of experience is preventing me from considering. Any ideas? Thanks for the tutorial and any advice you have.
