I always try to separate out the process of 'doing' and 'thinking'. While I'm outside painting, I never worry about the end product. It's far more important to me to have a positive experience and get some of that on the paper so I have lots of interesting marks, shapes and colours to work with back at the studio.
--------------------------------------------------
Working with mixed media using a variety of different paints. I work rapidly but build up the paintings in layers to make sketches that can be referenced in studio paintings.
Lewis Noble has lived and worked in Derbyshire since 1996. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and the effect this experience has on us.
His paintings are not snapshots or photographic frozen moments but through repeated layering and eroding of the painted surface, they contain all of the time it takes to make them.
The result is a body of work that speaks to the heart of what it means to be part of the environment.

For years I’ve always focused on the final outcome of everything I’ve drawn or painted, watching your videos inspire the joy of process and letting go of the finality, thank you!

I have learned just enough to know that to capture the essence of a place, object, or feeling I should get the shapes, colors, lines, etc. that speak to me down on paper. It’s so helpful to actually see it done in practice. Thank you so much for sharing this! I’m inspired to give it a go.

Hi! Watching you, I got the hint that a landscape is rather abstract on its own, so, if I allowed colours and shapes to take command, I'd get feeling rather than "reason", I'd grasp a kind of new meaning. Thanks!

Loved watching this, and seeing the bits of scenery you were looking at, that inspired your mark making and process. The only thing that was missing for me was hearing the local sounds, as I find they will often make there way into the piece. Thanks for posting your process and thinking, I have learned a lot and find your videos inspiring!

Hi Lewis, You are so generous to show your process. And perfect for people like me who don't need step by step instruction. Your video doesn't lend to copying (one couldn't possibly!) but it frees up our own selves--it gives ideas and energy. Regarding your mediums: You look like you are using an oil pastel or a stick of color (for the orange, for instance) right over the wet acrylic. What is that? I'm a bit mystified how all your mediums cooperate with each other. Thank you again............ and again.

I never knock any form of visual art but that doesn't mean I understand it or tune into it, so to speak. I will say it is fun to do loose abstracts although the drawback for me is they don't sell. I haven't a clue what is going on in this video yet it is enthralling to watch.

I enjoyed this but most importantly finally got it… about drawing and painting a collection of the elements of landscape that I see, not necessarily related to one another, but later arranged somewhat like notes in a music composition. And speaking of music, I prefer your videos without the addition of music. I could faintly hear background sounds, children, dogs, birds, water lapping against the rocks… and I wanted to hear fore of that as you painted, but instead of my senses of sight and natural sound the mechanical music interfered. Thank you for your generosity, free videos free for those of us who are not in your paid audience.

Your work is so complex, difficult for me to understand how your marks are reflecting the photos shown. Your sketchbooks and plein air drawing videos are generally so inspiring to me yet I just don’t get the thinking behind this one that’s a “how to”!

I find abstractions through working rather than seeing them while there. At the risk of being self serving, this is what my workshops are about. The one in Autumn especially. :)
