Thank you. Instead of blanking out the form filling, it would be far better to use burner addresses so that people can see the exact criteria required. This would be far clearer to someone watching this (and other) instructionals. Some of us are total newbies.

Hey Wundertech, thanks for the video. I am exactly in this situation, I am behind a double-nat (ISP modem/router combo). I understand the part about setting up ddns (using synology's service, check returns as normal), but I am not entirely sure how to proceed then setting up vpn server. This is what I intend to use it for. I would have wished if you proceeded to also demonstrate that part, or please, please, point me in the right direction. Again, I wish to access my nas externally through vpn, via ddns. Thank you in advance. P.S. loved your written tutorial on xpe dsm 7.

Unfortunately, if you have a double NAT through your ISP, there's no way to set up a VPN server. However, you can use Tailscale which is a zero-configuration VPN and there's a package for Synology. I'd suggest looking into that: www.wundertech.net/how-to-set-up-tailscale-on-a-synology-nas/

I don’t know how Internet providers work overseas, but here in the land of Oz, by default most ISP’s provide IPV4 addresses as Carrier Grade NAT which cannot be accessed externally. In order to have remote access working you need to request a PUBLIC IP address. I didn’t look at the other videos linked from this one, but it might also be worth talking about securing the NAS with Firewall rules once you expose it to the Internet.
@WunderTechTutorials

I do know that a lot of people have CG NAT issues, but fortunately, there are a lot of ISP's here that don't use those. The security video goes over the firewall, so hopefully that section helps people!

LOL you are paying an ISP that is literally denying you access to the internet but is simply selling you online privielges, what a smart ass ISP management model XD. @@bnetanl CGNAT has got nothing to do with outbound access to the net or reliability, both work just fine. CGNAT is really only an issue for inbound connections which only a small percentage of people actually require, most have no clue and life goes on just fine. Having said that, I’m on a public IP address (you can easily opt out of CGNAT if you ask). I don’t know what other options there are with IPV4, there are literally not enough public IP addresses to go around for everyone.

@WunderTechTutorials 9 ай бұрын
In this scenario, no, it doesn't have to be OpenVPN, but it does have to be a personal VPN (which PIA isn't). PIA is for internet privacy, but won't connect back to your house. You need to actually host a VPN server if you'd like to access the NAS from outside of your house.

The last step is to port forward. Showing you how to port forward on pfSense won't make sense if you're not running pfSense, so you need to see what router you're using and figure out how to do it. Unfortunately, every router is different and I don't want to add confusion to the mix.

You said that if I check the box to obtain a TLS certificate from Let's Encrypt at the time I set up DDNS, then I won't have to open TCP port 80 or 443 for certificate renewal. You said that renewal would occur using DNS. Could you explain that a little more? Without opening UDP/TCP port 53, Let's encrypt won't be able to reach my NAS for DNS communication. If you are saying that Let's Encrypt will renew through the Synology DDNS service, how does the renewed certificate get to my NAS? Thanks for a great video, like all your videos.
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
If you obtained a certificate using DDNS, it uses DNS validation, meaning that port 53 does NOT need to be open to renew the certificate. This link will explain it: letsencrypt.org/docs/challenge-types/ With that said, if you want to access your NAS using DDNS from outside of your local network, you'll need to use port forwarding. Though it's not something that I'd recommend (VPN is preferred).

I don't really get the difference for accessing the NAS via QucikConnect, private DDNS or this Synology DDNS. Where are the pros and cons? What is recommended to set up?
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
The video linked below explains it better than I can through text, but overall, QuickConnect relies on Synology to manage the connection. DDNS requires port forwarding (the worst option, IMO), and then the "best" option from most people's perspective is a VPN. There are various ways to accomplish the same task, but VPN is generally viewed as the best/safest. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z72bh5yU1JjWn2w.html

Hey WunderTech Would love if you can help answer this for me! If I connect to my NAS via DDNS and I am on my local network would I still be limited by the WAN speed? Or would it know to switch me over to local router LAN speeds? For example My NAS is connected via LAN arrogation but my WAN is only a gigabit connection but my LAN is 2gigabit.

If you're using LACP, you'll be limited to 1Gb either way, but you probably want to set up a DNS record to the local IP address so that you can always confirm you're using the local connection.

Thank you for this video, it was well explained. However, I have a question: at the end of the video, you seemed to jump quite quickly into all these fairly technical methods of accessing the NAS, including via VPNs etc. Is all of this necessary? The official instructions simply say to access the NAS over the internet by typing the hostname into the browser, and when I attempt to this I get either continuous loading or '401 Authorization Required'. I have used nslookup and got a response, and as far as I can tell the ports are forwarded correctly on the router, although I may be missing something. Would you perhaps know anything about this?
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Accessing the NAS through port forwarding is the "least" secure way of accessing it. That's not to say that it doesn't work, but here's a greater explanation of it: www.wundertech.net/how-to-secure-a-synology-nas-tutorial/#2_Accessing_a_Synology_NAS_Outside_of_your_Local_Network

Thanks for the video much appreciated. My DDNS is set up correctly according to this video with the status stating 'Normal'. I'm trying to access my Synology via ssh through terminal and I keep getting a connection timed out error message for port 22. I've set up port forward rules for the external IP to my synology via my router which the synology is connected to but nothing seems to get me past that error message. Turning off firewall on both router and synology hasn't fixed it either. I even flushed the DNS cache on my mac. Still nothing. Not sure what else there is to try but open to suggestions.
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials Жыл бұрын
I know this isn't your direct question, but I would avoid port forwarding 22. You don't really want to allow external people to SSH (unless you're limiting it to a specific IP address and if so, my apologies). As far as getting it to work, the only other thing I can think of is Synology's firewall if you are using it.

What is the "Dynamic IP address" for in the OpenVPN configuration? I've watched all the intermixed tutorial videos (DDNS, VPN, Initial Setup, specific router Por Forwarding instructions) and so far, the Synology external name only redirects me to the router's (not synology's) login page.
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials Жыл бұрын
A DDNS hostname just tracks your external IP address. It can be used for basically anything that is attempting to connect to your local network, which is why it's normally used for services like a VPN. Keep in mind that a port has to be forwarded on the local network for it to work.

@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The overall safest way to access it is by VPN. At that point, you'd use the DDNS hostname in the VPN configuration file so your device knows where to connect to the VPN. With DDNS, you also have the option of simply exposing the Synology DSM port number via port forwarding and accessing it that way (DDNS_HOSTNAME:[DSM PORT]), though this is generally not recommended. A third and perfectly acceptable way of accessing your NAS from outside of your local network is by using QuickConnect.
