How to Access Manual Focus on 50mm f/1.8 RF

We couldn't figure out how to easily switch to using manual focus on the new Canon 50mm 1.8 RF with the programable focus ring when we were searching for solutions online. So when my friend stumbled onto the function to enable manual focus quickly and smoothly we thought it was worth sharing. I hope this is helpful.

This is VERY helpful! Thanks so much. I actually really like the ability to have autofocus and manual focus override using your method. Really enjoying this 50mm F1.8 - it is my first non L series lens in the bag. Worth it for its price.

This was really helpful but there's another step I had to do to get this to work on my R. On the purple AF menu> 4th panel> "Lens electronic MF"> change to one of the enabled modes (I put it on "one shot -> enabled."

I came to the same solution with "Lens electronic MF". Do you know/understand how the option "Disable after One-Shot" works?

for canon rp owners. go first to the orange menu "other" and go to item 5 and edit it. find the af-on item and change it to af-off. now the af-on button will disable autofocus when pressed

This only works in OneShot-AF mode and not in Servo-AF, right?

Really? when you have MF selected on the lens if you hold the AF on button it doesn't work?

@@The-Vibrant-Photography yeah unfortunately it doesn’t work on the RP and I tried today once again with the exactly same 50mm f1.8 lens model that you had on your camera for your video. It might be just some limitation of the Canon RP (and I have the latest firmware by the way). But your video will for sure help the Canon R owners and it might work as well for R6 and R5 models. Customize the AF-ON button into AF-OFF from menu. Logically.

That was a thing we figured out with other commenters, it won’t work no matter what for the rp for some reason. That was almost a year ago though so they may or may not have worked it out with firmware but it’s already been a good bit of time into the life cycle of the rp so I doubt they’ve fixed it

You need to change your lens electronic mf. I use one-shot->enabled so i can hold autofocus and use focus ring in my lens to adjust the focus. And make sure your autofocus setting to one shot, not servo. Servo af will track your object continuously and the focus ring won’t work even if you change lens electronic mf.

Hi guys, actually it worked on my RP, I just tested. Differently from the way that it shows on their camera, on RP it shows the focus point red, so you're able to control the focus manually.
