Excellent, Peter! As a long-term user of Freeplane, I've actively looked for ways to help the new user understand why FP is something they should investigate. Those of us that use it KNOW its value, but how to help the uniformed discover its power and flexibility. Opening the program can be daunting, especially when one doesn't have any reason to climb the learning curve. Your presentation is one of the best I've seen in this regard! Shoot! I've been using FP for years and your engaging presentation style renews my own thinking about how to further incorporate FP in my daily work. Thanks for the well-done and straightforward presentation.

Thanks for that, Bill. I think most folk have a set idea of what a mind map is, so when we talk about it, we see one thing, while they see something different. I remember reading an anecdote about a conductor (of orchestras) walking along a beach whistling. His partner muttered about the noise. And the conductor said something along the lines of "you hear me whistling but I hear the whole orchestra".

Thank you for those very kind words Phani. I love that much of the software in this genre remains open source and free. It means that none of my clients have an excuse when I suggest they use it.

That's totally true! I work as an applications scientist and I found the mind maps are extremely useful especially during applications development and troubleshooting the multi million dollar tools. Please keep up the good work and I look forward to see more videos from your youtube channel.

Dear Dimitry. It should be me saying thank you for such a fine product. I still don’t understand the open source model despite a bunch of folk at JCrete trying to explain it to me last year. But I sure am happy that you guys produce great work using that model. I have been asked to do a few more videos about Freeplane, including a “how to”. I hope to do them within the next few months.

There are different kinds of motivations behind open source projects. I think we develop Freeplane just to share it with other people and so to give our existence some more sense. We are not getting any money. I believe you have the same motivation to record and share your videos.

Got you. I love the "give our existence some more sense". Interesting how life has become so commercial that we regard something that doesn't have a financial cost as worth less then a commercial rival product. Software with heart…

Peter, may be you find interesting pretty vibrant Freeplane discussion forum where users share how they use the program and discuss their needs with the developers. Probably you even could even learn something helpful like we learned from your video and your insights. sourceforge.net/p/freeplane/discussion/758437/ Particularly interesting topics of the last time: Freeplane usage questionnaire Jonas Batista Freeplane Version Announcement Copy tools

Thank you. I checked it out. And then managed to offend the forum gods when I tried to register… I will try again later. I have no doubt that there is lots that I could learn. I never see myself as an expert on the product, much as I love it. Or even on the concept. I had enough people asking me to do the video that it seemed worthwhile. Watching Jonas' video was wonderful. Insightful.

I used to roll my eyes at the concept of mind-mapping because I didn't relate to it. This presentation, however, made me see that this is exactly how I like to work (but didn't have have the software to do so efficiently). I downloaded Freeplane before the end of the video ...

Thanks Sally. I think when we mention the phrase "mind map" we have no idea of the image that invokes in some else's mind. Each of us has a different history. Showing people how it does what it does, and how one uses it, offers a completely different context.

Beautiful presentation, content and explanation. Am in my 4th unit of a 6 part Arabic Grammar course and am lost! Could not find the right software to do a mind map, my paper version was becoming really messy. This seems just right. It does not seem like something I could use to learn a language, but believe me Arabic grammar is like learning mathematical equations. Its full of rules and exceptions and almost every alphabet has a meaning and needs notes and memorizing. Referring back to videos and course material was impossible! Your demonstration has really inspired me....I might just get there eventually. Thank you!

I know I'm a bit late to this party, but I just caught this video while downloading Freeplane...again. New laptop, renewed desire to write the Great American Novel. (How that compares with the Great European Novel, I haven't a clue, but go, Old-Worlders, go!) I want to thank you Peter for this breakdown on mind mapping and the little bit of personal bio you gave me. It clarified many ideas I've vaguely understood but never implemented properly. I've had Freeplane (as a graduation from years of Freemind) and many, many other mapping programs on several different computer systems over the years because I always knew that mind mapping is the way to move forward...I just couldn't seem to wrap my brain around it and step on the gas with it. Now, smack in the middle of middle-age and with the youngsters grown and (almost) all out of the house, I'm finally finding opportunities to put the 35 years of my scribblings into good order. Thank you. On a "why did I choose Freeplane" note, I've been looking into Scapple as a mapping solution since I'm using Scrivener as my writing headquarters, but in comparison I find that Freeplane has much more broad functionality for my purposes. Bonus: it's free. Thank you for that kindness, developers. :) Subscribed and looking forward to your videos.

Dear Kelsey. About ordering those scribblings... I found it intensely useful to recall my life in terms of various "memory palaces". List every home you ever lived in, and then use that list to remember as many experiences you can from each. It's been astounding for my clients to use this to remember events, and then relate that to some of their current foibles. Do the same in terms of your romantic relationships, every girlfriend. The same in terms of your family relationships. The same in terms of jobs and schools. Each anchors you in a time and place which retrieves long-forgotten memories. Warm Regards Peter Carruthers

Excellent presentation. How did you drop the companies act into mind map. Copy pasting loses all the levels which doesn't help at all. Do you have a tutorial on how to do that?
@PeterCarruthersCoach
@PeterCarruthersCoach 6 ай бұрын
Thanks David. I was working on a training project. I started with a PDF version of the Act. Copied and pasted the chapters in. Then added the next layer of detail, and the next... A fair amount of work, but I learned a lot about the process, and a heck of a lot about the Act - the point of mindmapping. I did it agian for the Protection of Personal Information Act (much shorter, than heavens.) Each mindmap tool has idiosyncrasies when it comes to importing. But most can export in different formats, some of which will connect with other mapping tools.

Hi Peter I liked your video a lot. Personally I also use Freeplane and are eager to learn about new ways of using it. In your video it looks like you copy the pdf document completely with one action into Freeplane. I'm a little puzzled on how you did this. drag and drop does not work for typical pdf files (at least if I give it a try). did you import and structure document manual or do you use a script/addon to do this ? Thanks.
@PeterCarruthersCoach
@PeterCarruthersCoach 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Fred. Cut-and-paste works better for me than drag-and-drop. With a PDF it's a little more complex because there is often a bunch of extraneous text. For instance, for the Companies Act, the PDF has line numbers down the page, as well as page numbers, and these really get in the way. It's much easier to drop the text into something like Textsoap (on the Mac) and use it to eliminate the stuff you don't want. Or do it by hand in a text processor, which is worthwhile, but it takes time. If I'm researching the web, I have my FreepLane map open alongside my browser and it's usually quite easy to drag-and-drop individual paragraphs onto parent nodes so that the new text becomes a child node. I hope that makes sense?

Freeplane isn't just "open source". It's "libre software" as it's released under the GNU GPL. This means any programmer can change and redistribute the software to improve it whenever they wish. So your favourite Mind Mapping software isn't doomed from the moment a software company goes bust. :)

@PeterCarruthersCoach
@PeterCarruthersCoach 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Justin. That's a lot harder than it looks :-) Extracting the text from the PDF is a pain in the bottom. Copy and Paste! Specifically regarding the government acts that I've been messing with, they introduce line numbers, page headers and footers, and then the text erratically ends with hardcoded line feeds. I normally use a text editor to do the bulk "cleansing". I use a Mac, so something like TextSoap comes in very useful. I'm sure it isn't the answer that you wanted. But I hope it helps.
