Learning the Soft Field Takeoff is essential in situations with soft ground such as sand, mud, snow, and grass. How it differs from concrete is the amount of friction created when going down these fields.

I really enjoy the breakdown and all the details. My only feedback to both of you is to remember to keep the hand on the throttle. In the soft-field landing video he let go of the throttle to perform the flare. I believe in hand on throttle in case is backs up on you during takeoff or to add full power in case of a go-around. Everything else was excellent! Take care!

20 degrees of flaps will get you off a little quicker

In western Kansas, if you come to a stop on the runway it's an automatic fail. A guy I know busted his checkride because he entered the runway and stopped before taking off??

He must have been instructed to perform the soft field and you don’t stop on that maneuver.

I did my first takeoffs on a grass field due to the main asphalt runway being under construction. Totally fun to fly in ground effect and then you just zoom up when up to speed! 🛫

I always enjoy your videos and even though been flying for over 42 years, I can always learn something new. I cannot argue with anything you say nor do I wish to. But telling someone how to handle a stall is not the same as experiencing it. The same definitely holds true for soft field landing, maneuvering and take offs. Even take offs and landing on grass is not a soft field. You must experience a soft field - sinking 2+ inches into the mud to properly experience a soft field. Maneuvering may possibly be more important and more difficult than the take off. It most certainly should be discussed if you want to properly teach soft field techniques. One of the other comments was regarding the throttle - which I concur with - the hand should never come off the throttle. Your videos would have far more impact if you were rolling through mud rather than a paved surface. I just today had to wash the mud off my stabilator after yesterday's flight into a muddy field (a very regular occurrence for me)

What they're not telling you is that on a soft field takeoff is that your don't want to come to a full stop on the runway when doing a soft field takeoff. Otherwise it'll be much harder to get the aircraft moving.

Imagine taking off or landing in a soft field in a Airbus A380.😧 But also good advice and points Liz.

There's a delicious irony in a student forgetting to maintain the centerline of the runway in a soft field takeoff. Are there then no fields in Texas or do you strictly paint by the numbers here?

Very good break-down of a soft takeoff. Reminds me of my 172's days! But now flying a fixed gear Cardinal (C-177B), once your airborne, if you push the yoke forward the airplane will not accelerate and will settle back to the ground. The only way it seems is to let it accelerate to its takeoff speed (57 kts) with the nose wheel slightly off the ground. At this time it will accelerate normally once airborne. Would you have any insights on this particular manoeuver for a Cardinal?
