I went to school for Graphic Design and most of what I know is through that program. However, I have also learned a lot by watching videos online and talking to different designers. I think what's really important for a young designer is a strong portfolio and it doesn't matter if you have a degree or not.

This video made me happy. I'm in a gap year looking forward to attending a uni for fine arts & graphic design but my plans have been drastically shifted due to covid. I read endless posts about how being self-taught in this field isn't always going to land you a job, and that only stresses me out more. Nonetheless you've become my favourite KZfaqer and I'm hoping you will reach a bigger audience because you deserve it ♥️😌

As an absolute beginner, my number one problem is coming up with ideas or not knowing where to start. Idk what I’d do next after making a logo, mocking set ups, what fonts I could use, if I need to include photography or how can I incorporate all of them into a portfolio and I’m honestly overwhelmed since graphic design is my upcoming major but idk where to even begin even after a simple sketch.

Been struggling to find a job since I graduated College last year around this time. Got finessed by a company that used me for a month with no pay a couple months ago, that was my biggest accomplishment lol

This video really helped me figure out what to do. I just flunked college and was stressing over where to go from here, and I am now applying for freelance positions and reaching out to brands!

I’m currently finishing up my BA in design. From 2012 to 2015 I tried to go the self taught route and I couldn’t do it. There was never a time I could set aside to devote what I needed to learn. Everything else always was priority especially working another full time job. Finally when I enrolled in school, took out grants & loans the people in my life and myself actually took it serious and I really started to advance my skills. Also, going to school really opened my eyes when it came to learning animation, photography, web design etc.

Thanks for this. I’m currently going to be a sophomore in college this fall and my major is graphic design and I’ve been feeling discouraged but this makes me feel better about the options there are in design :)

Finding a KZfaqr who can help me through this is so helpful because I don't know or know of anyone who's even close to the design field or art or anything like that and I've always felt so scared and lonely

I just finished retraining (already been to uni but not for design so couldn't afford take 2!) and I just wanted to say how much I love the language that you used in this video. "You are professional" etc, made me feel really positive after the ol' rona has diminished job opps where I am at the moment.

Well rounded and then find something you're passionate about. I'm a graphic designer at a law firm and I know I want to work for a company/firm and don't like the idea of freelance personally. I have a focus in web design and that's also something I specialize in ❤️ I love the work, I feel more comfortable as a full time graphic designer and not a freelancer! Just as another note for people coming into the field and aren't comfortable with the idea of freelancing.

I learned how to edit photos in both Photoshop and Lightroom last summer. I am intrigued to learn more with Photoshop. My major is Communications with a concentration in both video and audio production. I am graduating this spring. I would like to become a graphics designer and use the graphics for videos.

Funny how I'm taking a graphics class and this pops up in my recommended. It's like KZfaq read my mind x.x Interesting video.

Great video, helpful advice throughout! My favourite part of university was that it forced me to learn things like design principles and typography and layout, which I would probably have never thought about on my own.

I'm currently studying media and entertainment in college rn and i basically want to be a content creator and make cool posts for companies so I thought graphic design would really help me in my field and could also be something else I could fall back on as a side job/ hustle.

Great point about college. I consider myself a graphic designer already, but recently enrolled in graphic design school. I look at it not as a way to become a graphic designer, but to enhance the skills I've already been using.

I finished my associate degree last summer. I think I am better at illustrations and logo design than anything else but I've struggled so much with being able to find a job that I'm starting classes for an animation degree tomorrow.

Hi Paola! I've been following and watching your videos for a while now. I'm a frustrated Graphic Designer and you and Kel Lauren's channel have been my main motivation and source if i'm feeling a creative block going on. But i've been having a really hard time freelancing and looking for clients have just been really terrible for me and i just can't seem to land a permanent or a long time client to work with. Basically i just want to know what your process is as to how to grow and learn new things. It's something i've been struggling lately and i feel like my portfolio just revolves around the same style of design and i feel like growth is something that i need BADLY. What kind of things do you do, or how do you get started when you want to learn something new? If you watch tutorials what do you keep in mind to make something "Personal"? I like to feel like a "self taught" cause in some ways I am, I'm on University studying graphic design, but I actually want to be a illustrator so, as I know graphic design is not specifically made for learning to do illustration I actually learn more from stuff when I research on internet, anyway, I feel like the formal studies are helpful to make the plan, but definitely research and the energy you put to learn is what actually makes you learn, anyway I'm not sure that "self taught" is the way to call it cause there's someone that wrote the articles or recorded the videos that have helped Lear something, like, that people is for me the professors haha that's why I feel like nobody can be a total "self taught" but yeah... It's important to do stuff by your side

I am a Communication graduate but now I am working as a graphic designer. I didn't go to university to study graphic designing but I learned it through watching a lot of videos on youtube and by listening to my mentors at work. I applied for it but didn't have any idea how to do it so it was a real challenge. Just continue learning. At first, I don't even know how to use pen tool but through practice I learned a lot.

Mostly all of my trade or skills are self taught, i would recommend you get a certificate of some sort, you don't have to go to school, but having a certificate at least where i live is so important pay-grade wise you could do exactly the same as someone with a certificate or more even and you would still get paid less because you don’t have a piece of paper. so i learn on my own and then get a certificate to prove i'm good at that skill, unfair? yes, but whatchya gonna do! be safe everybody and remember you can do anything you set your mind to.

It’s either this or I become an art teacher idk… I’m leaning more towards this though but also I could be a graphic design teacher as well but idk making choices like this in high school is hard

One thing I wish you touched on is the importance of networking. Networking is just as important, if not more important than having a strong skillset and portfolio. You can be the best designer out there, but if the right people don't see your work, you won't get anywhere. At least when it comes to getting big freelance gigs. It only takes knowing that 1 right person to leapfrog you into a specific scene and open tons of opportunities you wouldn't have otherwise had. Moral of the story: know everyone. Invest in people.

I'm a ne 3d vfx freelance artist and I can definitely say my knowledge from a 1 year graphic design course helps a lot in terms of the color composition etc..

I'm currently learning graphic design online,started last December and I'm still on it, they were times I wanted to give up because I'm a university dropout so it has been a little bit difficult but I'm not giving up..

I'm a Freelance graphic designer in PH and currently a 2nd year student under BS Accountancy course at PUP💖 Being in the industry of graphic designing helped me somehow in my finances esp in this midst of pandemic😅 I'm a self-taught artist and still learning on apps that I may use in the future. I rsee your vids abt graphic designing really helpful to me who's new in the industry😊 I only use Adobe photoshop cc 2019 and MedibangPro for some sketches. As of now, I try not to spend all of my income because I'm keeping some for my dream drawing tablet that will be a big help as I do graphic designing. I only use the touchpad/mouse of my auntie's laptop that I use for work hehez. I find it really hard to work with limited tools to use and almost try to just give up bcoz I cant provide those tools that I need. But seeing your vids helped me to become motivated in doing what I really like💖💖 I am really into any medium of arts (sketch, painting, graphic design, and colored pencils) but I didn't had a chance to get what I really want because I need to be more practical in choosing the path that I will take in the future. I believe formal education is better because you can learn what good design is. Anyone can teach themselves Graphic Design but they won't know what good design is.

I'm thinking about doing photography too. It's great with graphic design. That's part of Jack of Trades. I been doing graphic design since 2015.

I learnt a lot of new things. I'm mechanical engineer and graphic design is one of my hobbies.
