Imagine if there was a worldwide pandemic ok and the only thing people could think about was when they were able to go drinking or to watch football eh, imagine that ludicrous scenario. Do you know how we got over the Black Plague way back when? We stayed isolated for as long as it took to die out; imagine the paranoia and fear, but again the togetherness of the world as a whole. We used to call it being "in the zone"... You can't stay in it all the time, or even every tie, but it feels great while you are there. Runners, basketballers, musicians, even racecar drivers all talk about the same experience where time slows and perception switches to ultra-mode. The same thing happens with philosophers and writers. I like to think it is something we as humans have evolved to do... mentally get into that space.

Having ADHD is like living a life of either being indefinitely trapped in the flow state or being completely unmotivated. Whatever interests us automatically places us into that state and self control isn't as easy since the ADHD brain is disabled in that area.
@Juli-zg7sj
@Juli-zg7sj Жыл бұрын
Yeah I didn't really know how to feel about this because being unable to control the flow state is therefore being unable to control happiness. Honestly, for some reason what I find nostalgic for myself as memorable experiences are a bunch of absurdly minor things. Like for some reason I remember me when I was 8 staring at a piece of wood and staring at the texture, grooves and looks of it and imagining some story around it. Don't know why, probably don't want to replicate staring at a piece of wood for 1 hour but for some reason I really nostalgically remember that happy moment, although it may have just been me using my 8 year old imagination to overcome boredom. Nowadays I think remembering stuff like this will be a lot more rare since it is a lot easier to scroll through some KZfaq when you are bored, instead of staring at a piece of wood for an hour.

I went through a time to where I engaged with my hobbies militantly and after a few months it left me drained and burned out. Later I translated it into the flowstate of running and the meaningful activity of having a well though out lifting regime. Don’t get wrong, if you can find a way to enjoy work, by all means, do that. But I fully recognize that there is no shortage of shit jobs that aren’t fulfilling. And we should eliminate those jobs instead of forcing a permanent underclass of people to keep working them for the benefit of those that are higher in our arbitrary power hierarchy.

Every expression of opinion is an attempt to add to the vast cultural body of human experience. In other words, anything you do is an attempt to change social instruction. We cannot be free of it.

It feels good to be in a creative flow, and because it is creative work it can feel very meaningful and fulfilling, but I also want to make memories and savor time. Flow is too effortless and time goes by too fast. I enjoy the memorableness of surprises and discontinuities. I think engagement and feeling alive but also having more metacognition and being in a more learning and novelty remembering mode is what I prefer to flow.

It's very interesting how similar flow psychology is to taoist philosophy. These are ideas that have existed for millennia but now it's backed by science.

If you live your life with the mindset that this moment of your life is the best you'll ever have and not expect the future to grant you more, then you may get to experience a feeling of consciousness of your surrounding and of the present. I call it,”as good as it gets". It is however inherently a bad mindset because this focuses on the principle that the future will be worse than the present which is untrue, because we can not know. In other ways believing the future will be good or bad is a fallacy, as you can not know. But through this mindset I manage to live horrible moments of my life believing that things can only get worse from now, which in many ways lets me find the positives of my experience. Just remember, You are solely responsible for your own happiness and meaning. However I must inform the readers that I do not believe living one's whole life with this mentality, but rather be an intermediary until you can get in a spot of your life where you are actively "living it".

I have a question if anyone would be kind enough to indulge me. I like the idea of meditation, constantly bringing yourself back to your breath and learning how to notice every passing emotion so you don't carried away in it. But isn't that very thing the opposite of being in a flow state? Sometimes I like being lost in my own world, but meditation seems to seek to bring me out of it so I'm can no longer be in flow. Thoughts?

Flow sounds like one way to have fun just like TV and nothing is ultimately pointfull anyway. And tv isn't memorably fun (always) but it is fun. Playing devil's advocate

The difference is that TV doesn’t necessarily engage your brain in a way that challenges you. Watch the video again. A flow state activity will challenge you to a reasonable level. Something slightly harder than what you could do in autopilot. Challenges like these create situations that are rewarding, not just pleasurable. Watching TV can be pleasurable, watching a really good movie is one of my favorite things to do, but there is no reward for having challenged yourself. As for your question, what difference does it make, your brain gets more from rewards from challenges than it does from simple pleasure. That’s why people work hard at things that don’t necessarily contribute to their survival or prosperity, after hiking a mountain seemingly there is no tangible reward, but the reward is internal, having overcome an obstacle, you have a feeling that you did something worthwhile.
