Great video. I have to point out a big mistake you made that will trip up new producers. The makeup button is an auto gain button and will automatically boost it up 9db since you cut 9db. The output fader lets you adjust that but you added 9db plus the makeup button so you were adding 18db to the signal resulting in that massive clip waveform you got.

Okay so with attack set to minimum i can be able to calculate what the gain reduction will be since i know the amount of audio going over the threshold based on where its peaking at and my set threshold and ratio. How can i be able to predict what gain reduction i will have when the attack is set any other value. I get that the compressor comes in later meaning that some audio goes uncompressed before it kicks in but guess am a bit of an OCD person. Another question, Is there a way to quickly tell what the quietest and loudest part of a piece of audio is without having to play it while watching the meter?

Hi Julian, I believe that the makeup button is an automatic output level , which automatically calculate how much GR is done then boost the output according to the GR, and this mean it's an extra feature for this specific Ableton compressor. And the audio engineer should decide using either the auto option (enable makeup button) or the manual option by setting the output level to -/+ dB. It's better to always disable makeup button when using this ableton compressor otherwise all you going to hear is the volume being boosted. Also when someone jump to different compressor which don't have this auto makeup button it will act very differently to his ears!
@JulianGrayMedia
@JulianGrayMedia 7 жыл бұрын
Another engineer pointed this out as well. My mistake! On other compressors, the makeup button toggles makeup on and off, didnt realize the ableton stock compressor engages automatic makeup gain :)

You are describing, the use of compression to normalize a track. Compression becomes more complex, when you use it to mix track harmonics,dynamics, and just mixing and bussing in general. A lot of confusion, is the result, when compression is used at the wrong times, and the wrong places? Understanding Gain stages, is more important, then how normalizing a track can be done, with compression, especially since you can ride a fader in many cases get a better mix(pre-compression). Can you make a video where you have two tracks, that just wont mix well, and you use compression to glue them together?

aroubnd 2.03 you mention how a singers NATURAL dynamic keeps changing... and how to essentially level that out... but that actually means robbing it of what makes it ''real''.... another case of the producer getting in the way if u ask me! altho i mainly work these days learning digital/technoid tecniques, i grew out of real bands influenced by the direct live session recordings typical of the 1950s, where one mic (in my case two mics for stereo) was positioned nearest the mixing desk such as it was then, and the musicians positioned carefully so that they are heard in the right balance (what a mixing desk should really be recreating), and i am completely capturing a genuine live anuadulterated band session. once i have that understood and working, i can also simultaneously have each musician going into an indivudual channel for after-tweaking IF NEEDED. it's pretty much how classically trained sound engineers and producers who worked from the bigband era worked, and is still the best and only way not to get production in the way of a real live band sound. (think George Martin who worked for the Beatles) so, now that i'm doing purely virtual/digital music, i still stick to those principles. and as that gives me a ground to work from,it means when i m,ove away from that, then it is deliberate, and should sound consciencious. but a singer or analogue intrument is MEANT tohave varying dynamics as thats what makes it musical. rather than blandly setting popular levelling. the only issue with analogue and live vocals is to give the musician or singer a decent metronome so they stay bang on pulse so it always fits into the grid for future tweakings.

Nice video, btw I do have two questions. 1. How do you get rid of the clicking that sometimes occurs when you set the attack to 0 so that the kick punches through on a drop for example. 2. Could you make a video on how to get vocals/audio in time with the bpm you have set in your DAW? Like if the audio/singer is in 140bpm how do you get it to line up perfectly at 120bpm for example?
@JulianGrayMedia
@JulianGrayMedia 6 жыл бұрын
Yes I can do a video on the vocal timing. its been on my to-do list for a while now. I wouldnt bother with the click to be honest. It's not very noticeable in the context of a mix.

I appreciate the response to both questions. Also, thanks for all the videos you are putting out. They've really helped me advance a lot faster. The compression video and the videos where you make a song from start to finish have helped me the most. That being said, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for that video. Keep doing your thing man!
