How to add a new lining to your coat

Do you have an old coat or jacket with a torn lining? In this tutorial, I will show you how you can reline your own coat or jacket using the old lining as a pattern.
Relining a coat or jacket is an easy way to give new life to your old outerwear. In this tutorial, I am covering fabrics suitable for the project, how to copy your old lining to make a new lining, how to assemble your lining and finally how to sew your new lining to your coat/jacket.

Ah your video was helpful! I would have to watch it again to truly understand it as I'm just briefly watching it. But your video gave my hope that it is possible to have a lining to an already existing coat!

Wow watching you do the selves was like magic. I get so confused but really appreciate that it can be done. My husband has a favorite suit coat that the lining has torn but I would never attempt to do this I think it will have to be done professionally.

You are so welcome! 🤩 turning sleeves like this can be a bit mind-boggling - I have done it wrong many times in the past. You can definitely do this, but if you feel it’s better to pay a professional to do this I am totally in favor! (I do it even at times myself)

Be great if you could put together a video of you lining a coat that doesn’t already have a lining and show your own cloning process for creating a new pattern for the lining, then attaching the lining on a long (ankle or calf length) ladies’ coat.

I have question, is it okay if I leave the sleves unlined? It gets me sweaty with that lining on the sleves

You can definitely have lining without sleeves, but how well it works depends a lot on the design on your garment & the material it’s made of. If you get sweaty I would look into a lightweight breathable material for the sleeves such as a linen, silk, cotton, bamboo or a light-weight merino wool. If you plan to actively work out in your jacket/coat I would look at moisture wicking active wear fabrics. Maybe a mesh lining at the sleeves would be a good option? I used to have a windbreaker lined with mesh which was great when I was sweating in it.

I was surprised that my new Corneliani overcoat isn’t fully lined. I’m going to see if the store I bought it from will do it. I’m glad to know it can be done!

It’s a common way to save money (for brands), but if you want to have your overcoat for many years to come and / or make it warmer it is a good move to line it 😊

@@missmatti I most definitely will! Aside from being warmer and lasting longer, it’s also an additional stylistic element. Plus it makes sliding the jacket over a blazer or suit jacket easier. Corneliani isn’t exactly a discount brand; I wouldn’t expect them to try to save money like that!

I am sure it’s a company that values quality. It might be other reasons too why they didn’t line it too - hard for me to tell without seeing it 😊 However, I really hope they can help you add a beautiful lining! 😄

@@missmatti they do! Their overcoats are amazing. $2,500 very well spent. I spoke with the store that I bought it from. They’ll gladly add a liner for me. That and a set of Benson & Clegg buttons. It’ll be great once I get it back!

That’s awesome! Will you attach the lining yourself? I didn’t have the right tools for mine so I sent it to a leather repair shop but I think I would love to test doing it myself today ☺️

It’s worth the wait I think if it means less hassle for you and you save money by doing the new lining yourself.

How much would a local tailor charge to replace just the body lining (not sleeves) if I give them the material ?

No idea! I think it can depend a lot depending on where you live. You are probably better off asking your locals tailors rather than me 😅

I wonder, would it be possible to only replace the underarm area somehow? I've recently become allergic to fragrances & cannot get the deodorant off of all my coats & jackets. I've already had to get rid of all my clothes.😞 It would be so much easier & affordable if I could figure out how to do that. I thought maybe I could cut that part out & replace it, but how would I keep it from fraying?🤔 I bought this fray glue, but it has fragrance in it.😖

Hi, Thank you for your lining coat video. I'm not replacing a coat lining. Instead, I'm sewing a childs coat using a 1949 sewing pattern. I really don't like the recommendation to attach the lining using a catch stitch. It didn't look nice attached to the neck facing. So, I machine stitched it there. Now I'm considering using a slip stitch to attach the rest of the lining instead of the slip stitch because I think it would be stronger. However, I think the catch stitch would be flatter and possibly more vintage looking. Do you have any hand stitch ideas for attaching the front facing to the lining?

Good question! I think a catch stitch would work but so would a ladder stitch / slip stitch if you want a more invisible stitching. I might personally prefer to use that to attach a lining over a catch stitch. Hope it helps and good luck with the child’s coat!

@@missmatti thank you so much for replying. I ended up using the catch stitch and it blends in well with the matching thread. I did slip stitch the bottom lining hem and other areas. Next I'm going to sew some buttonholes. Maybe after making a couple practice buttonholes. I am also going to pick stitch the inside of the lapel. Watching you reline a coat helped motivate me to attach a lining, by the way. Hearing someone talking about sewing is really nice, especially since I don't know anyone else who enjoys it. Thank you.

Good point! I will do - the only fabric I think will be tricky to find is the fabric I used in the sleeves as that was bought 4 years ago now from a company called Stoff & Stil (a danish fabric store chain). But I will link something similar and the rest and let you know once I have done so!

Hello there, it's me again! I have a question: The coat I have doesn't have a lining, how can I get the peices to make a lining? Should I try to trace the coat's stiching patterns?

Yes exactly! There are some tutorials out there how to clone / copy clothes that might be helpful for you to check out. Then you need to adjust the pattern as follows: shorten the length of the garment so that the lining isn’t showing on hems (adjust the hem around 5-10 mm), raise the armhole around 1 cm for better arm movement and consider adding a centre back pleat for more ease. Hope it helps!
