Absolutely! Normal means you are perpendicular to a flat surface. A person standing straight up on a flat surface is oriented normal to that surface, but if the ground is on a slope, the person would be standing vertically to the world (so they don't fall down), but not normal to the surface. As an example, if you want to drill a hole in a part at an odd angle, you'll need a plane that is normal to the axis of the hole. The tool axis will also be normal to that plane.

something i miss is the ability to create a new plane directly in the middle and top of the selected solid and automatically align the X axis of the plane with the camera X axis and the Z axis of the plane should always point to the camera. I know that i can do most of it with wireframe > bounding box > advanced > create tool plane but then often the rotation is not how i want it to be. Maybe i should start learning c hook.

If you create a plane From Solid Face it will drop a gnomen on the center of the face selected, and then there is a Select Plane popup dialog that allows you to cycle through 8 orientations of that plane, with one of them being the orientation you're after. I hope that helps!

@@MLCCADSystems only sometimes. When the part has chamfers which are not the same size or is wierd shaped the gnomon is no more perfectly in the center and thats whats important
