Great suggestion. I will add it do the list. It really depends on how you like your clothes to fit. I generally go for no ease or a very small amount.

Love this video. I have a a very broad back/shoulders and a short waist. I love "sheath" dresses with front and back darts, but they never fit. I beg you to consider doing a video on how to modify a sheath dress for girls like me!

Hello Anastasia, I really appreciate your taking time to make these videos for us. If you haven't made one, I'd love to see how you make a regular fit dress into a sort of "flowing" dress. I would imagine it's just a matter of adding fabric to the skirt part, right ? But, would you need to add pleats into it or not ? TYSM for sharing your techniques and knowledge with us. Thank you Anastasia! I did have a go at taking in a thrifted dress using back darts and I was pleased with the result, and even more so now, seeing your tutorial, that I had done most of it right. The only thing I didn’t know about was releasing the dart by clipping into it and cutting off the excess material. Great tutorial. I always look forward to watching your channel. I have learned so much from you.

I would have distributed some of the fullness to the side seams instead of huge darts.

I think she said in the video she has other videos on taking in stuff via side seams as well. This video is focused on the single technique, which makes sense because it's easier to learn things one thing at a time.

Yes you can do that and you will also have to re shape your armholes and your sleeve. So by just adding the darts you will not be changing the fit of your armhole. It really depends on how much you need to take in and how the garment was made. You can defiantly do both or just one method.

Great video, I have a dress in mind for this alteration but I don't have a dress form and I'm not really sure how I could do it on myself. Can I put the dress on backwards? Would that work?

It would probably work as a preliminary step, then put it back on frontwards and see how it looks, then adjust if needed. You can also pull some of the extra out at the side seams, which is easier to do on yourself.

Trying it on backwards won't work for most people - our fronts and backs are pretty different shapes. Probably best to either find a friend to help or to pinch and feel about how much you think you need to take in with it on, then pin it and try it on. You can make adjustments from there depending on if it's too loose or tight still. It's just less direct.

If you measure yourself and then measure the garment you can pin up the extra through the darts and try it on and then adjust from there.

Just curious, why wouldn't you just take in the side seams?

It is not always an option on a garment and you can make it unbalanced by doing that depending on how much you need to take it in. This will actually give you shape in the back and not just at the sides. If you take it in at the s.s you will also need to mess with altering the sleeve and armhole.

If you only take in the side seams or even just the back seam, it will end up bunchy and weird in other areas. Darts are the best way to effectively take a garment in so to ensure the garment stays even all around. However darts are surprisingly difficult to do which is why I'm watching this tutorial 😂
