Welcome to our Ford Transit build series episode 7! 🚐
In this video, we explain how to add framing to a van. We used pine furring strips and attached them to the frame of our van with rivnuts.
Before you begin framing your van, make sure you have researched your layout ahead of time and know where you want all of your furniture to go. It's also a good idea to leave paths in your framing for your wires.
🙏🏼 Thanks for watching our latest van build series video! We’ll be coming out with new videos documenting all the steps of our DIY van conversion every (other) Sunday. Subscribe to our channel to stay up to date: shorturl.at/eixJ5

ABOUT
We are Maddie and Nico and we’re building out our 2020 Ford Transit to live in full time. After traveling to numerous countries and living together both abroad and in the US, we have decided to take the leap and become digital nomads! Neither of us have any building or carpentry skills. We are taking on this project completely self-taught!

Since I just got a 2023 Transit Trail 3 weeks ago, this was very helpful. You must be one of the first to get a 2024.

Ours is actually a 2020! Sometimes it sounds like I’m saying “2024” because I’m saying “2020 Ford” 😆 Enjoy your build out of the Trail!

Love the idea to use rivets like this. Not sure I’ve seen anyone use them like this and it’s quite brilliant. Could you provide me with the size of screw that correlates with the rivet? I’ve searched online and although I know different rivets have different diameters, it’s hard to find good info online. Any help would be appreciated🙏🏻

Hey! We used mostly size M6 for the rivnuts and bolts. There are also a few M8s on the Transit. We have links to these in the description since it can sometimes be tricky finding the metric sizes at hardware stores in the US :)

I am in the designing/dreaming stage, while I search for a new/used Transit 144 WB HiRoof van … I am using the free sketch up and have bed, upper cabinets and utility (fridge, electrical) cabinet done. I just placed them in a 81” h x 70” w x 122” l box. Can you share your sketch up van so I can fit my current plan inside?

Framing is an absolute waste of money, time, and space. My van is sound deadened, insulated, and the walls are directly attached to the steel ribs. This saves weight, and gives you more space, and saves you money.

Ok. For our van, we preferred to use rivnuts over self-tapping screws (we wanted to prevent possible rust that comes with unpainted holes in the van metal). Also, our walls are thin 1/4 inch panels that we nailed into the framing, so we wouldn’t have been able to use your method for the outcome we wanted. But the great thing about building your own van, is that you can build it however you want. So, clearly this video isn’t for you if you did it a different way 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@nomadmaddie the Ford is a narrow van, so losing around 2" is a big deal. I don't know if your van is galvanised, but my Citroen Relay (Ducato, Boxer, Promaster) is galvanised. Drill a hole, there's zero rust spread beyond the hole cut surface, and if I remember, I used a good quality anti rust paint on each hole and put the screw in while the paint was wet.

@@CarlJones14like I said, your method doesn’t work for our desired outcome. Our walls are too thin to screw directly into the van and we needed framing for our bed bump-outs. Both of these things saved us space and weight over screwing thicker wall boards directly into the van metal.
