Tips on how to add muriatic acid safely and easily to your pool. Muriatic acid will lower CYA (cyanuric acid) from your pool water. You have to test your pool water to know how much muriatic acid to add (which I do not cover here).

Hello there, CYA levels and pH levels are not the same thing. CYA stands for Cyanuric Acid, and so to increase the CYA levels of your pool, you actually need to add Cyanuric Acid to your pool. Adding Muriatic Acid is only going to decrese the pH level of your pool, not increse the CYA level of your pool. CYA is used to stabilized the chlorine in your pool so that it doesn't break down by the UV light of the sun and hence the chlorine could last longer. On the other hand, the pH level is used to keep the efectiveness of the chlorine as well as the swimmers comfort.

Muratic acid also lowers the alkalinity level too. You can increase your CYA levels by adding chlorine tablets to a floater since they have cyanuric acid in them.

That is definitely not the proper method to add muriatic acid to a swimming pool. Good way to burn the plaster. That’s because the acid is heavier than water, and if it’s not diluted, it will sink to the bottom, and burn the plaster!

Muratic acid doesn't lower CYA. Muratic acid is mainly used to lower alkalinity.

CYA is the stabilizer in the pool for chlorine (like sunscreen). The only things that lower CYA is sun exposure and partial draining/refill.

You are lowering the pH of the pool. CYA is only lowered by draining water in the pool. Pool professionals have been conducting experiments with Alum to help reduce CYA in pools quicker. Also, adding acid to water in a bucket first is best practice, but adding it directly to pools is okay as long as it is in different areas. Acid is heavier than water and will etch your finish if habitually added in the same spot. One pint of acid will lower the pH 0.4 in 10,000 gallons for those wondering.

CYA? Impossible. The only way to get rid of CYA is by emptying your Pool. You probably mean PH. I just empty my pool because of high CYA

Muriatic acid does not lower CYA. It lowers PH and TA. Also, your PH must have been insanely high to add that much acid. You really should take this video down and re-record with correct information. If someone takes your information and follows it, there is potential to really mess up a pool’s chemistry.

... makes video to educate people on how and why to add pool chemicals... adds it incorrectly, and doesn't know the actual reason as to why he's adding it.. you could have literally read the label and done a better job.

@@DIYGEEKTEXAS the reason is muriatic acid is heavier than water (you will watch it sink to the bottom), so on your gunite surface, it will sit and soften your plaster. so if you do pour in directly into the pool....make sure you brush it asap!! if you dilute it in a 5gal bucket, you would want to pour in front of a return jet. dilute it 1 to 10 ratio in 5 gallon bucket is safest way. we see people pool quite often where you can tell that is the area they put chems in. its always bleached out looking

@@theshadowtalks i didnt mean for it to sound like that......when i have a gunite pool that has a stain, i pour acid down a pvc pipe and let it soften the plaster, then i brush the stain out. but it definitely softens plaster

Do NOT buy the Muriatic acid from Lowes or Home Depot - the concentration levels of hydrogen chloride (the acid) from those two locations is about 1/2 (14.5%) of what Leslie's is selling (31.5%). You pay more thinking you're saving money. Leslie's is better quality. You need twice as much of the non-Leslie's product to do the same job.

I agree with you HD and Lowes have 14.5% while DIY center, HASA pool supply, has 31.5%, which is the best. Usually in my pool 20K gal, when the Ph level is around 7.8-8.0, I put 1/3 gal 31.5% Muriatic acid a week, which will correct it to 7.4. Lately since I put Boric Acid in my pool I usually put in 1/4 gal a week 31.5% muriatic acid.

I am a new pool owner.. I am still in the process of understanding how to care for my pool. I usually take a pool water sample to Leslie's store and according to what kind of pool (salt water pool in my case), pool size, and PH, they tell me exactly how much Muriatic FL Oz to add. Must diulete in bucket full of pool water. I admit, I still need to do a better job myself measuring to 1 part to 10. Strongly avoid adding none measured acid into the pool directly.. Save your plaster
