How to Add Text to Videos in Shotcut

Adding text to videos in Shotcut can be completed in 2 different ways, both of these concepts are demonstrated in this video. The basic results are adding text directly into a video clip, or adding text to a transparent layer. Both have pros and cons, its likely you will need to use a mixture of both if you use Shotcut regularly. If you only want to learn one method, then method 2 is the most versatile - timestamp below to skip to that part.

@@rubenvor this is great! 👌 well done! The zip line footage you have taken is awesome. When you have good content like that it makes editing fun! I like the different transitions between slides, usually doing the jump-cut but occasionally a fade transition, and the start and end frames are very well done. Keyframes on your first video is impressive! I image its taken a while to get it like that - every minute was worth it. Keep it up! :)

Can you do a video on keyframes & animating text. I watched several videos more than once but still don't get it. I don't understand what those circles in the corners do. Every time I entered my text with the size & font it would just go back to something else. I was able to slide my text in & out but during the animation it would become small then big. I wanted it to do the opposite. As a newbie it is very frustrating.

Hey, yeah I haven't done a text tutorial in a while, ill see what I can do :) its a hard one to explain, but keep playing/practicing with the Keyframes. Once you get it, its a very powerful tool. Just takes a while to get your head around. Your not alone in your frustrations, I've been there!!

Hey! No idea why you cannot see the Text: Simple filter, very frstrating. It is still displaying on my Shotcut, so they have not got rid of it! However I do have something you can try to get round it... Click the 'Open Other' button towards the top left of the screen, then select 'Text' in the dropdown, a popup box will appear and give you the usual text-filter options. Here you can select either Simple and Rich (its basically the filter but popped out of the usual window) When you press ok you will be given a black preview pane with white writing (or similar). Click and Drag the writing onto the timeline, and now you have a Text: Simple filter applied to a transparent video clip. From here you can copy and paste the filter as you need into other video clips. Bit of a long work around, but hope it helps!

How do you show two videos with space between them to add text ? I want to put text between two videos to explain the difference between them.

Hi, To achieve this you are best using method 2 on the video, but instead over overlaying the text and video, make it in a sequential fasion, so it goes: clip1 > text > clip 2 as it is sequential, you can do it all on 1 layer if you choose (having the 2nd layer may make it a bit easier to move around though)

How do you use large text to scroll across the screen. I know how to use key frames, but whenever I write a long sentance to scroll, Shotcut thinks I am putting it on one page, so shrinks the font. I have ticked used actual font size, but it is still far too small.

I think the easiest way to do this is to set your text box more than the width of the screen. It will be hard to see visually until you apply the keyframes, but using the Size Position and Rotate filter is what you need. Use the boxes in the filter pannel rather than the preview screen to set this up, otherwise it will be impossible to stretch the box to the length you need (which I think is what you're currently finding hard). Hey so, whenever I add text to my videos, black borders appear on the side of the screen cutting out a part of the image. Any ways I can fix this?

Hey, is the black boarder there before you add the text layer? If you do, go to Settings > Video Mode > Select the right size. This will force the canvas back to the correct size, but I've never seen the text layer resize the canvas before, is there anything else going on in the project?

@@joe_cullen The black border wasn't there before. However I did quite a bit of experimenting since the comment and found out the problem only arises when using the text filter, but if I click open other and then select text it works as intended.

I use OBS, I did my fair share of gaming when I was young and started recording videos with it. Have never really looked at anything else - its always been perfect for me!

Hey, thanks for your message, the layers are automatically transparent. If your not getting the same results, let me know what method you are unable to replicate and whats happening, and I'll do my best to help.

@@joe_cullen same for me. I tried method 2, and wherever the text track is, that text is pure black background.

Nevermind. I figured mine out, it's a known bug. The replicable situation is, the transparency does not work if there are two video tracks/layers before adding the text. What I did was remove one of the video tracks, and immediately the text transparency worked.

@@daem0nfaust Hey, Shotcut has changed slightly since making this video. The answer to a completely transparent background, is to go into the color pallet in Shotcut and make sure Alpha Channel is at 255 for the background color - this means transparent.

First, thank you so much for this video. I've subscribed to your channel and hope to watch more of your Shotcut tutorials. I have a question about the second method. I just made a video where I used this for the first time. You can see it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLaEkrqgscuog6c.html The problem I ran into is that after I had put in a lot of text, I went through my video again and found I wanted to add more text. But as I did so, I realized that it was moving every single text box over! If I added five new five-second-long text boxes, the originals at the end were now 25 seconds off of their correct position! Is there a way to add a box to a timeline and have it not extend the timeline by that length? Can I lock text into a certain time once I have placed it?

hi there, first make sure you do not have 'Ripple' or 'Ripple all tracks' toggled on. this can sometimes cause undesired movement on the timeline. The next thing to consider is that the act of creating elements directly on the timeline, push the content over, but the act of moving an element doesnt (unless you ripple or ripple all toggled on). So with that in mind, add a new blank track, create your content on the blank track, then drag it onto the correct track. This will stop the existing content from being pushed. Hope you work out which one you need. Goodluck!
