@@Tad7772 🙌 I was a bit lazy not saying I’d measured the chain and it has a bit left (but not much) before .75 slots in. I checked the tension in the cable this afternoon before thinking about going to the clutch (was serviced in September) and turned out that a little adjustment to that sorted the problem.

@@jonathantraves8425 👍 Well, I am glad I wrote that "if you have not already" part than. 🙂 I changed the chain recently and just be cerful the recomendation for 11 - 13 speed chains is to change them at .50. I figured that you probably have GRX which I think is 11 - 12 speed so this may be helpful and could safe some money in the long run... ☝😉

Yes. 100% use the correct spanner if you have it. But. If you can round that bolt with needle nose pliers it’s would be so tight/seized you’ve got bigger problems with the derailleur.

They've changed a low cost spring with a complex mechanism to make it more susceptible to going wrong. In Japan, they don't have Murphy's Law. They like it as complicated as possible. No-one watching this vid will have had a home built 'Off road' dirt bike with a Huret Eco derailleur. Simple and reliable.

Excellent video! Can you go over the steps to service the clutch mechanism, remove, degrease, re-lubricate, etc.? It would be great to know how to do that as well.
@Ed.R4 ай бұрын
The new derailleur I got for my old mountain bike has a clutch. I switched it off as it made the chain rather tight and added a lot of drag. Maybe with this knowledge I can slacken it a little.

Ordered a (fast?) gravel bike with 2by GRX group set on it that would be mainly used on the road (%80 of time). Is there any disadvantage to keep the clutch engaged on tarmac or is it best to use the clutch only on gravel or bumpy roads?
@pendodave46614 ай бұрын
#askgcntech Or something like that... I'm also curious. Presumably, it would wear out/need adjustment much less if only used when off road. Or on a standard UK b-road...

I've got the GRX 2x with the clutch. The clutch clamps on a cylinder that rotates a little when the derailleur cage bounces and thus prevents it from bouncing. However, this thingi does not rotate at all when I move the cage or shift. What's wrong with my RD and how to fix it?

Question for a future tech show. Might be a physics question for Ollie. Exactly why does a front wheel touching a back wheel bring down the "front wheel" rider? Having crashed this way a few times, I don't recall my front wheel jerking 45-degrees to one side or anything like that. Nor do I recall hitting the back wheel as part of some rapid move across the road. I just touched a back wheel that was going 99% the same direction at 99% the same speed as me. Is it just that a 5-degree, sudden front wheel turn knocks the rear rider and bike off balance, and then there is a wobble one way, then an over-correction, and then the rider crashes? Maybe it's silly to even wonder about this, and there is nothing happening beyond the simplest explanation that it makes the back rider jerk their wheel and they lose balance. Or, could the problem actually be that the touch significantly slows the rotation of the front wheel, ruins the gyroscope effect, and causes the front tire to skid for an instant? If there is something complex going on, once we know the actual physics, is there some technique riders can learn to stay upright? A gizmo that could be built into headsets to prevent whatever is happening in that 10/th of a second? (seatbelt shoulder harnesses have a mechanism that allows them to move slowly, but not quickly) It's sad to see so many wheel-touch crashes in the pro peloton alter so many seasons and careers.
@chris1275cc4 ай бұрын
I dont have a full explanation for this, but you say "I just touched a back wheel that was going 99% the same direction" but if you think about it the parts of the 2 wheels that touch are actually moving in opposite directions, so when they touch they will try to counteract each other. So (totally speculating at this point) the rear wheel of the rider In front is under torque from the rider/drivetrain and carries most of the riders weight. Your front wheel is basically freewheeling and supporting less weight. Therefore the rear wheel of the rider in front will "win" and your front wheel will decelerate dramatically, maybe even to the point it is for a split second lifted off the ground and forced the opposite way. So imagine popping a wheelie at high speed but holding the front brake on when the wheel touches the ground, it would cause the wheel to skid/bounce and you would likely lose all control.
@CL-7894 ай бұрын
Brilliant. That explains it. I thought about rotation, but only got as far as ... let's call it ... both wheels are going clockwise. I never got to seeing that at the point of contact, the back tire is moving upwards and the front tire is moving downwards.

Somebody please tell Alex that "small" & "little" are redundant synonyms for one another? 4 x, in this video (and lots of others). Also, one or 2 drops of lube on the mechanism doesn't hurt, & put some rubber-compatible grease on the o-ring before you put the cover back on.
