Thank you, thank you, thankyou! No wonder I have had so much trouble walking like a hunchback for years; my walker was way too high. My husband and I will be changing the height in just a few minutes. So happy to find another reliable PT person on line. peace

Short, simple and straightforward. I’m an RN doing infusion nursing at a rheumatologists office. I don’t recall ever being taught this. In college this type of thing was seen as being within the realm of PT and they handled all equipment adjustments. I am 1 wk post op of a spinal fusion L2-L5 and had to figure out for myself what the determiner of proper adjustment was. I like that this video was done by bona fide PT. It gives it the gravitas I needed.

SH2006, I appreciate your enthusiasm! Falls are the second leading cause of accidental death worldwide. More needs to be said about it and that's what I'm trying to help with 😊 Even if 1 fall is prevented, it is worth the effort.

Hi there, Sharon. Is your walker the one with a seat, also called the Rollator? If so, the way to adjust handles on Rollators is to first look down the shaft from the handlebar and find the knob to twist counterclockwise. Turning it counterclockwise will loosen the screw that it's attached to but make sure that you don't lose the piece on the other side that is holding the screw in the hole. Once it's unlocked with the pin out, the walker handle can be moved up or down to the right height. The height should roughly be at the wrist for most people when they stand upright if they are able. Someone can always help adjust it if it's too difficult due to arthritis in the hands or other ailments. Always stay safe! 😊 I'm so glad to hear that you are getting better!

This is great, we recently got a upright walker for my mother and are trying to find the correct height for her, any suggestions for sizing it up?

Briar, thanks for the feedback. The upright walkers can be really tricky. Typically, the upright walkers are best measured with the person standing as tall as he or she can. Then, the person bends the elbows 90 degrees. Either that or a notch down below that would be a rough estimate. But sometimes though, that's not the case and sometimes, the upright walkers can be dangerous. For example, I had a person who I was working with who was dead set on using one because it was thought that it would help solve the postural issue. Unfortunately, the anatomy of the spine of this person wasn't able to accommodate the "correct height" that the family chose. Because of that, it was extremely challenging and threw the person off balance with the new height. All that to say, upright walkers are great for some, and standard walkers are great for some. Rollators are also great for some. It really depends on the person and what their strengths and challenges they are facing are. That's why it's always best to seek out your doctor and physical therapist to determine the best device for the individual based on the needs of the situation. I'm glad mom has a good son looking after her! Thanks for being an example Brian. 😊

I notice people having the tendency to adjust walkers in a way that encourages better posture but it also ends up being too high almost like pushing a shopping cart. What’s best? Adjusting it correctly and continue reinforcing proper posture or adjusting the walker a notch higher?
