With the help of your video, I rejuvenated to real’s I bought on eBay. We spent a week at the ocean in Delaware, and I can verify for 100% sure, there are no fish in the ocean.

*Great reel, **enjoyable.fishing** recommend very smooth and I love that you can change from left hand to right hand so easily. Gave it a 4 on durability because I haven’t had it long enough to rate it. Doing good so far.*

If it helps, just found my old childhood Pen 9 Winds from the late 90s, early 2000's. Well over 20 years old. A little light corrosion I need to clean, but works as good as the day I got it despite the humidity of MS coast, shrimp boats, etc. Cheers.

thank you thank you thank you. I just bought A penn 209 and a penn 309 used on eBay ,because, my entire family rented a large house for a week in Delaware on the beach. I haven’t been to the ocean since 1979, and I want to try saltwater fishing fir the 1st time..Both of my sons have been saltwater fishing on vacation over the past few years but I never did.. they had so much fun and got so many fish that they talked me into going this year.. I have to take these reels apart and service them since they are used. I’ve been searching KZfaq for videos on how you actually operate these types of reels. I’ve never owned a casting reel…. The one reel that I have, the penn 309, I haven’t touched them yet to service them until I learn on KZfaq the dos & donts.. I think I need to buy an ultrasonic cleaner to clean all of the individual parts inside, (I think). I am a many decades motorcycle junkie. And when I buy a used motorcycle I always assume everything has been neglected.Things don’t ware out, things are neglected to death.. I’m going to approach these reels the same way. I’m going to completely disassemble and clean and lube them and I needed to know what all the levers and adjustments do.. your video here is the first one I’ve been able to find on KZfaq that does not assume I know everything.. but now I do know how to make adjustments to the reels.. Thanks

That's the level wind. You can use without it, should cast farther. Level line with thumb when you reel in.
@Texan10487 жыл бұрын
How do you make the 209 cast more than 5 feet? Mine doesn't go ANYWHERE no matter what the weight is.
@jameshancock65706 жыл бұрын
Make sure the reel is lubed properly, and that there is a very small amount of end play (spool moves very slightly back and forth with your thumb, say less than 1mm) when the spool is adjusted, and the level wind adjustment knob isn't cranked down too tight. If that doesn't do it, it's time to take it in to a good reel mechanic for a service.

I use the worm shaft tension thumbscrew for setting it up just like you would control the drop for a regular baitcaster, so it drops slow..is that Ok, mine is the 309.
@rookiesportsman81855 жыл бұрын
Ya man you can but its gonna cause some issues with the level wind pawl. Just use the spool tension knob on the side like I showed.

Is there a way to adjust the setting there is on the clicking version of free spool? Like I have my poles behind me on my kayak so I keep it in that clicky mode so if something bites it makes that clicking (whizzzzz) sounds and alerts me. Problem is when I’m sailing the speed and size of my lure pulls line out sometimes and always sounds like I’m getting bit. Would be nice to tighten that up a bit. I have a bunch of old penn reels. Thanks for any ideas.
@riley77966 жыл бұрын
back off your drag until it is almost all the way loose, but tighten it so that your lures dont pull drag. dont troll in free spool and keep the clicker on. when u get a hit, quickly either tighten up the drag or put it in freespool and tighten the drag.
@ThePigonSkates5 жыл бұрын
K&L: I have the same problem when I am kayak fishing, here's what I found works perfect and is so simple: Remove the reel from the rod and just above the foregrip twist a rubber band on the rod. Use this to tuck the line under and it works like a downrigger release. I've also used smaller rubber bands attached to the hook keeper that break away when bit.

What is the best line size to use for the 209 peen peer, for all around use?
@josemarrero79822 жыл бұрын
What if my drag doesn’t tighten and i can still pull line even when I tightened to max, would that indicate a defective reel? I have the exact same one btw
@rookiesportsman81853 ай бұрын
Probably needs a good service. There is an upgrade kit for the drag on these old reels that I do every time I service them for people.

*I do a lot of slow trolling live bait for King-fish off the north Florida>>>**allabout.wiki/yzpu** i have always used TLD 15's because they hold a ton of 20LB mono because they take off 300 yards on the first run if you hook a smoker. I bought 2 of these and so far they have be flawless, and hold more line. I will buy 2 more when my other TLD's retire*
