Visit us at www.gtchannel.com for more content! Setting your ride height is just the start when you switch to coilovers. The real beauty of using KW DDC coilovers for us was in being able to lower the car and maintain the OEM corner balance. KW and other coilovers also let you improve the corner balance or weight distribution of your car if your car doesn't already have a good set up from the factory.
#gtchannel #suspension #KWsuspension
Technik and GTChannel show you how to set up the KW Suspension DDC using our project BMW E92 M3. We changed our wheels and tires to a square set up and in doing so raised the front ride height. This changed the handling characteristics. By putting on the DDC coilovers we were able to adjust the ride height and more importantly regain the stock corner weights despite the taller front tires.
Robert Choo lends us his expertise and garage to do the adjustments.

Most people only care for the lowering and automatically think it will handle better, but in reality they just ruin their geometry...Very good video!

Nice to see someone actually care about weight balancing, CoG, setting up for load transfer, etc. Often you see guys just going for nothing else but aesthetics, and in the process they (often unknowingly) ruin the geometry and handling of the car.

Worth mentioning that when doing corner weights the droplinks/end links should be removed. Then once corner weights are set they should be replaced with adjustable drop links. This ensures there is no pre load in anti roll bars 👍🏻
@jamsstar2010
@jamsstar2010 Жыл бұрын
So what happens after you have corner weighted and then reattach the drop links ?
@TheSpragz
@TheSpragz Жыл бұрын
@@jamsstar2010 if you corner weight it then re-attach the the oem non adjustable droplinks the Arb will be under a constant preload. Because the coilovers will be at different heights. With adjustable droplinks you can adjust the length of them separately to match the different heights of coilovers left and right.

20mm in the rear is perfect. That’s what most companies recommend. People who just try to close the gap are ruining their suspension geometry. Thanks for the video. I was curious about the process of corner balancing.

Hey guys, I need advice with fitting torsion beam suspension in the rear, I see that the BMW M# has such a system. I need to know how it works. MacPherson is straightforward but the torsion beam is different. I need to know what gets removed first, spring or shock? And also to put it all back together, what goes first? Thanks in advance.

I'm a bit confused. Is adjusting the lower perch different than adjusting the top in that adjusting the lower one has no affect on the height? It would seem that when you're corner balancing you're inherently changing the corner heights also, and afterward the heights are all slightly different, and uneven.

Now you need a spring rater so you can maintain or change the roll couple to tune the way the car handles. You need to know where you started by rating the stock springs and knowing the rate percent front to rear. I've always preferred a car with a bit of push when it starts letting go. Loose can get you into trouble. And adjustable rate sway bar is nice for fine tuning the handle. Indy cars use an arm to the link that can be turned, it's a blade and as it rotates it will deflect some.

@@joakize I installed v3s on my car today and had that same issue. i did overcome it though. on my m4 atleast there is an opening in the control arm. u can put a socket extension with say a 22mm socket on the end up through the spring. I then used a very small jack to put light pressure on the middle of the perch. that stopped it from rotating and i could adjust the rear. i still needed the wheel off but atleast i didnt have to take the control arm off again.

So corner balancing is just setting the ride height....After you've set the ride height?
@KnightDriveTV
@KnightDriveTV 6 жыл бұрын
No, the ride height doesn't change much visually when you corner balance. Small changes, especially with higher spring rates makes dramatic difference, but also weighting the car works in sort of a "voodoo" fashion which doesn't directly affect height, only weight. I'll explain...say you set your ride height and visually it looks good. You can actually redistribute the weight of the car and obtain the exact same visual ride height. Reason being, if you raise a corner, you actually increase the amount of weight it carries...so while you raise the perch, the weight increases so further compresses the spring. Once you raise the corner, the opposite corner will also gain weight. You're making small tweaks to each perch which don't visually change anything, but dramatically change distribution.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, just some more confused people in the comments is all. TLDR; Spring preload raises height, no or negative preload lowers height(loose springs if no helpers/tenders), both adjust how much bump travel. The coilover world is odd and misinformed, KW is one of those companies that usually don't come with independent height and spring adjustments until you go all out with their track coils, because everyone has been setting them up wrong using the damper body and not the springs. In this video, the suspension appears to be upside down and separated compared to many other vehicles, so move the spring perch down adds preload raising the height, less or negative preload would lower it. The spring adjustment is the proper way, as it controls how much suspension travel you before hitting bump stops have AND the height, the body portion can be used to fine tune that more. Going by the bottom or top body portion and not the spring adjustment can cause issues with travel depending on the current preload on the spring, either too little travel wasting performance or too much travel smashing the car into itself. If you check out MCA suspension they have a ton of really good reads on how this works.

No stock suspension is a permanent height, You either need to put lower springs in, or coilover suspension. If you plan on putting shorter springs, you may as well buy shocks to save the car from bottoming out after 5000ks (because the factory shock compresses by x% depending on the springs installed).
