Nice! Simple old truck, easy to work on. No scan tools needed. Love it.

you don't want to adjust the backlash screw more than 90 degrees at a time and you want to wait 5 to 10 days (depending on how much you drive) before either adjustment. the bevel cut gears need to re wear together after adjustment

Thank you (: I have a 1980 Ford F-250 Ranger XLT and it seems to take a lot of adjustment going down the road even though the steering wheel doesn't seem to have play. The dealership told me to replace the steering gear box entirely, but I think I'll try this first.

nice! I will try that with my old van. even if it helped a LITTLE id be better off, mine is all over the road.

@@Lawknee I was not able to make the adjustment on mine, or didn't dare to try it once I saw where it was located, It would be very hard to get to on my van '89 Econoline 250 , but I did get an alignment done and new tires which helped quite a bit, it is still boaty and the steering feels vauge but that is probably how it was from the day it was made. I have driven many thousands of miles in it since this comment was made, its my rig for camping and road trips, I have gotten used to it and it doesnt bother me anymore, just have to kinda be ok with it having a little bit of a mind of its own and take it easy.

What about inside the steering column itself

I bought all new stuff for my 1990 Ford F-150. I keep gettin told not to adjust a new gearbox, but there is alot of unsafe play in it. Should I adjust my new(remanufactured) gearbox anyways? Everything is new, but still alot of slack..

@decidedisciple67 Thanks alot, I tip toed it, less than 1/4 , twice.. Good to go!

I have a1975f250 it is automatic when I select a gear its very stiff to get in gear any sugestions
@rayjohnson24947 жыл бұрын
Erin Fuller there is a bushing in the column you can get to it getting down in floor board looking back up at lower part of column, put powered graphite on the bushing. if that's not it use white lithium grease on Jack shaft in engine compartment you can see it under brake booster and master cylinder

I have a 1972 Ford F250 with a manual steering box. Is the adjustment the same?
@autoresource79428 жыл бұрын
+John Anderson probably….
@zenmasterutube8 жыл бұрын
Thanks!
@rayjohnson24947 жыл бұрын
John Anderson yes don't adjust back lash screw more than 90 degrees at a time. drive it aweek or so between adjustments to allow time for gears to form a new clean wear pattern

You do not mention how the adjustment is done; do you tighten the screw to reduce the play?
@natesv045 жыл бұрын
Yes turn it clockwise to tighten the steering

I have a Chevy K5 with the same issue...Sooooooo yeah.
@lagaman115 жыл бұрын
Bet it didn't come from the factory with that problem. I have actually owned many ford vehicles, and 3 ford pickups, 68, 79, & 95 Model 1/2 tons. They all, every single one of them, felt more like steering a boat on water than driving a truck (though the 95 model was vastly improved). It is actually a well documented issue with ford trucks, along with their horrible fuel economy. However, I understand that Ford has finally corrected both issues in their modern day trucks. Too bad they are WAY out of this working man's price range.
