Stem height adjustment is a common way to reduce hand pressure, neck pain and when called for, how to improve aerodynamics. Removing the stem can be a daunting task for many but with these few steps the process is simplified:
1. Loosen stem pinch bolt(s). These do not have to be completely removed but you should thoroughly loosen them.
2. Loosen and remove top cap bolt.
3. Remove any spacers on the top of the stem.
4. Make necessary adjustments to stem height. (flipping the stem is another process that will raise and lower the stem. You will find a video for that at a later date.)
5. Place stem onto steerer tube and install top cap.
6. The top cap places tension on the headset bearings. Over tightening can damage the bearings and the frame, whereas under tightening can damage the frame. Be sure that there is no play in the headset bearings but they turn freely once tight.
7. Alight stem with front wheel
8. Tighten pinch bolts to proper torque
After taking the bike out of a trainer or stand it is recommend to check the headset bearing tension, as well as after the first ride as some bearings have a tendency to seat when ridden.

Thanks guys. My new bars are too high so I need to drop my stem down.

Regarding your comment between 1:15 and 1:25. I believe the steerer tube/column should always be below the top of the stem. Please correct me if necessary.

You are correct. On carbon steerers this is even more important. Some brands, like the Trek bike pictured, require a 5mm spacer on top of the stem as well to ensure there is less of a posibility of pinching the end of the steerer tube.

I have a trek bike and no room to get the stem higher, that I can tell from looking at it after watching this video. Is there a way to do it? Or am I better off buying a new stem that angles up more?

Two questions: first, would it be appropriate to apply Carbon paste to increase friction between stem and handlebar? Second, should thread-locker be applied to those bolts? I had my handlebar come loose today while riding. Potentially those are very safety critical bolts and vibration might knock them loose - especially when riding aero-bars.

@alex-kr7zr we have not experienced a need for carbon past on the steerer tube. With that being said, there may be an instance where it could be beneficial. We would suggest following the manufacturers recommendations for your specific bike. It is not uncommon for a manufacturer to have some form of thread lock on the bolts. With our humid environment in North Florida, we normally apply a little grease to keep them from rusting in place(particularly if they aren't stainless).

Does that height change make a difference though?
@BikeFitBox
@BikeFitBox 2 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. Changes in height will make changes to your back angle. These adjustments can help aid in comfort and aerodynamics depending on the adjustment made.

@@BikeFitBox yes, but it seemed like it's just a mild height change. I don't expect it would do much for your back.

That is correct@@rayenharchay821. The intent of this video is an instructional video for our customers on how to properly make a change to stem height rather than a prescription for the amount of adjustment necessary to make a bike fit properly. Those details are very individualized for each rider and would need further consultation to determine whether it is necessary and if so, how much adjustment would be beneficial.
