Brian F - yes I took the chain off the cams but not off completely. You want to make sure that the chain doesn’t fall down in the engine once you take it off the cams. Hope that helps. Lmk if you have any other questions :) Ps- I got an email with your question but on here it doesn’t show the comment. Unsure why

If the ignition timing and valve timing are tied with a chain how did you get them out of sync in the first place? I need to replace the decompressor spring on my 190 but don't really mess with the timing if I can help it.

I’ve been trying to start my buddies 05 YFZ450 for months now. He had it in pieces. Unfortunately he passed away before he could get the quad back together. The family reached out and asked if I would wanted to buy it. He was able to get the engine back together but not back in the bike. That’s kinda where I took over. I was able to get spark and fuel but it wouldn’t fire. After checking everything I could think of I think I may have the same issue that you did here in the video. 🤞🏼

definitely is going to help me a ton if I get this bike over the weekend. guy says it need timing adjusted and it won't run because of that. no clue about anything with timing I'm not dumb with motors just never had any related issues with timing. if you know what it could be, the bikes a 2002 yz450f and the guy says it won't run because it needs the timing adjusted.

Hi Jonathan Roy. If you flash a light in that hole you’ll see the flywheel and on the flywheel there is some markings. You have to match the marking on the flywheel to the little marking on the case. Go for his forum it might be helpful with more specifics www.southbayriders.com/forums/threads/102894/

@@jonathanroy9112 as for what the issue can be with that 2002. It could Be a lot of different things. Timing is not hard to check. Study my video and watch some others as well so you got it down. Then check on the spot. If timing isn’t off then maybe you have other issues to worry about

@@slavsquad what do you think I should do ? buy it and then check or try to check there? do you think 1500 would be worth it for something that could be kind of risky? thank you for your help
@slavsquad
@slavsquad 3 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanroy9112 if the bikes in great shape and only needs timing done then that’s a good deal. But I would definitely check timing on the spot because if it’s actually needing a rebuild then your looking to pay another 1500 probably. Just interesting why he wouldn’t just do timing himself cuz it’s pretty simple. Could just be someone who doesn’t touch engines at all or someone who’s using timing as an excuse 🤷🏻‍♂️ For me it’s to risky. I’d rather just buy a running bike or something that’s blown that I know needs a rebuild vs something that your not entirely sure what the issue is. One way to find out. Meet up and check

Pretty sure you want to set your timing before you adjust your valves. The cam is spinning as your measuring the second cam. The gap will change as the cam spins.
@slavsquad
@slavsquad 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I set timing first. Loosened the cam chain and then measured.

is this the same procedure for yz250f 2007 and 2008
@slavsquad
@slavsquad 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s the same. Just different shim sizes. 250 has smaller shims then 450. That being said the valve clearance is probably different on a 250 then a 450 as well

question my bad if it was shown in the vid. how did you get the bottom part like the one on the bottom end to top dead center? you said that you couldn't see the marking at all and then it cut and you had it top dead center
@michaelpresey2273
@michaelpresey2273 3 жыл бұрын
You just have to turn the fly wheel counter clock wise until you get the third marking all the way t the right there should be a marking the looks like a H and then to the right another "l" mark

What if we dnt have any shims installed? I purchased new cylinder, and head. Dropped head off at shop for them to install new performance valves so no shims installed. So whats the way to properly do the math without existing shims installed
@slavsquad

Hello So are you saying there’s no shims necessary at all with the new valves (if so I’ve never heard of it so couldn’t help you there) Or your saying there’s no shims currently in there and your trying to see how to find the right shim sizes?

@slavsquad 2 жыл бұрын
@@saldanavlogs2255 you just pull the upper plug on the magneto cover and look for the marking next to the little h shaped mark. usually you have i believe a fire marking and thats first. you need to be on the second mark which is TDC. sometimes that Mark is shaped as a T for Timing/TDC. you also have to have the Cam Sprockets markings properly as well. I followed Yamaha Owners Manuel so its correct

Hey this is an insane video I do have a question though. Even though this is so old I’m taking the chance to see if you can help me. So I’m trying to get the Cam Cham tensioner to lock but with no luck, I can turn it and the chain becomes loose but after a few turns it never locks and even if I keep turning it won’t lock and the chain becomes tight again. Man what am I doing wrong herreee 🤣

@@slavsquad yeah my locking mechanism was faulty I had to remove it completely and even then it didn’t lock while it was outside the Cam chain housing. So yeah that got fried 🤣 I’m still using it like that tho it don’t matter.

Though now I’m working with the shims, my two exhaust valves were way off (.007) would not even go through the valve clearance easily but all my intake valves were in spec (.004 and .005) I’m just going to go down two sizes on exhaust valves (if I’m allowed to) and get those .004’s to .005 on the intake valves and call it a day. Does this sound familiar to you or am I just making all this stuff up? Haha first time taking my bike apart and having looked like 3 videos I think I’m in the right path what do you think?
