I’ve been pulling trailers for 45 years and I never really thought about how to adjust the controller. I’ve always just set it at the middle setting, until the other day, when my trailer brakes locked up in a panic stop. And that’s why I’m here, great content, thanks!

I was always told put your truck in drive and when your trailer can stop your truck completely without your truck breaks then you are good. You don’t want your trailer brakes locking up it will end up being a bad situation. Locked up brakes end up causing bad accidents, because that trailer will start to slide and you may not be able to correct it. Great advice. Thanks for the video

Your trailer brakes are never strong enough to stop the trailer and tow vehicle, they just assist in slowing momentum. If you go back and listen, I said once the brakes lock up then lower your gain by 1 whole number and then fine tune it from there. Your 100% correct that you never want your brakes to lock. That’s just to get max stopping power during initial set up. Thx for watching!

I guess you have to do this for different loads on the trailer. My 16' enclosed trailer hauls my john deere 1025r and empty

Unfortunately You will just have to guess basically, I suggest to just hitting the decreases button to start and then just slowly work up until you start getting some braking activity

Thanks for the info. When adjusting your brakes should you do it with a loaded trailer or empty. It seems that an empty trailer will lock the brakes before a loaded trailer would.

Depends in my opinion, if it’s a camper then they seem to be “mostly” loaded so you could adjust it for that but if it were a car hauler or flatbed, then adjust for unloaded and then you can add gain as needed since every load will weigh different.

Mine will lock up when I just touch the brake pedal but are worthless when I need them at higher speeds to help stop me

Unless you have my problem. I can shot 12v straight from a loose battery and my brake still won't lock up with the tralier empty. Yes there adjustable, even a little tighter than normal and the brakes or new....

Should it be at 0 when you're not towing anything or does it not matter? I just bought my first truck that has a towing package so I'm new to all of this lol

It’s not active when you have no trailer attached. It’s automatically activated when you plug into the 7 pin round connector. So once you have it set for trailer just leave it. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

What if your gain is relatively high and the trailer doesn't lock up yet? Thinking most likely the trailer brakes are shot?

I would agree that there is an issue with trailer brakes but without seeing and knowing history and age of trailer it’s hard to say but that’s where I’d start. Thx for watching

If they are standard trailer drum brakes then they might only need adjustment. There are videos on how to adjust them and what is the right amount of brake drag. If you've had the trailer for over a year and haven't had your brakes checked then that should something you have done along with repacking the axle bearings. It's not too expensive to have done or if you're handy to do yourself.

When the trailer brakes locked up, will it unlocked by itself when tow truck go?

Your just adjusting them until they lock up by using the trailer brake controller only. Once they lock up you will decrease the power applied (by decreasing number) and then when you actually drive applying your vehicle brakes, your trailer brakes will work accordingly. Thx for watching

No it should be empty. If you set it to a loaded trailer then the wheels will constantly be locking up when empty. Thx for watching!-

Hey so I have an issue I have a car hauler electric brakes double axel so when I set the gain to about 7 or 8 I'll co.e to a stop using the trailer brakes but when coming to a stop at low speed the trailer brakes will lock up even when I set the gain to about 1

It definitely shouldn’t be locking up at 1, obviously hard to diagnose without seeing it or knowing history or age of trailer and brake components. Sounds like you could possibly have a faulty wheel brake cylinder inside the drum that’s locking when set to 1, that’s just a guess though. Hopefully that gives you a starting point

@@toby514 wow that’s odd, there’s so many variables it’s just hard to diagnose without seeing. Could be issue with controller itself. Aftermarket could be wired wrong, factory could be malfunctioning. I just don’t know. Brakes could be installed incorrectly on trailer. Just no way to know without seeing.
