In this video, I address a really common problem I hear from songwriters: Not having enough time to actually write or finish songs! I give 3 systems (and practical exercises within those systems) for making songwriting a regular part of your life.

ABOUT KEPPIE
Hi I'm Keppie! I'm a professional songwriter, and songwriting teacher. I've been teaching song and lyric writing for over 10 years now for some of the best contemporary music colleges in the world- Berklee Online, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music's Open Academy, as well as for the Australian College of the Arts. At other times, I've taught for the Australian Institute of Music, as well as the LA School of Songwriting.
My goal is to help people write better songs! My experience in the classroom, with thousands of students at this point (many going on to find careers and success in music), is that your songwriting, like all things, can get better with meaningful, deliberate practice. My intention is to share the skills, knowledge, information, and ideas that I've gathered with anyone who wants to improve their songwriting.

Thank you so much for this. You have a true gift in speaking and a really compassionate and understanding voice. Just want to take a sec to affirm your efforts with these videos- in addition to great songwriting tips here, I found this video so calming and I’m gonna get off my phone and hit the home studio for some music time. Thanks for the inspiration. Take care!

The best bit of reassurance I got from one of my flute teachers was ‘everything you do is practicing’ - the point being that you going about your life being a human is part of the experience you bring to your art. So even when you’re exercising for health or making a meal or tucking your children in, all of that is part of being a song writer/flutist/rapper/painter/whatever your art form. I found that tremendously helpful in alleviating the stress from thoughts like “I haven’t practiced’ or ‘I didn’t work on my lyrics’ I think it also asked you to be mindful and creative in everything you do so that you are feeding the creative mind.

1:45 this exactly. When I have a good idea I become completely obsessed with it and my brain just plays the song over and over again for a couple weeks until the song is finished. I’m releasing an album soon where I wrote most of the songs while working the line, making pizzas at little Caesar’s. The idea of not having time to write songs is totally strange to me. I’ve written maybe most of my best stuff while out living life, having no specific intention to write. This is just me but the idea of sitting down to intentionally try to write a song is totally backwards, again just for me. One of my more recent songs came to me in a dream and it was mostly fleshed out when I woke up. This is not to say that practice and putting time and effort into the craft isn’t important. If I wasn’t practicing and doing the work I wouldn’t have written half of what I have. It’s just that the more time you put in, the better chance you have of getting inspiration but I never intentionally try to write something new. I just live my life, practice my instruments and ideas inevitably come. Just my perspective 🤷‍♂️

Great ideas Keppie. my note books with ideas are on paper , and not organized , I find myself searching through page after page of my notes over years looking for related ideas/ lines. I like the idea of placing words, phrases, chord progressions in there own place. Excellent! When it comes to Song writing group. I find a prompt helpful to get me started and I have found that out of say 4 songs written within this group, there is possibly 2 songs I like enough to put more work into.

I totally love this no nonsense approach to your videos. I have to view them twice or even more often to get the full content. It's just incredibly helpful in so many ways. So this is just a heartfelt thank you. And maybe you want to talk more about your songwriting group experience or even about your own group. I am so sorry that Berlin isn't such a good place for songwriters but maybe there are online options to connects with like-minded people around the globe...?

Picked up some of the songwriting practices from your video, I like the ideas and will try them soon. I wanted to make a similar video to this about carving time into a new artists day in our busy schedules knowing my friends having this issues to practice instruments or make music. Thank you!

Just found your channel. really love your approach. I've been writing for like 25 years and never really focused tacfully on it. I'd LOVE to see something, or maybe you have it already, on How To Come Up with a Song Idea. I can do melody, and chord structure, but I'm never sure how to Kick start WHAT to write about and then get a theme to write to or like a thesis to write to from that.

My problem is that I don't have time do develop my ideas. I have a lot of ideas, but developing the chorus from the verse, coming up with a bridge, just whole song structure, that takes time. To me, song ideas are practically dime a dozen.

You don’t know how to play one, or don’t own one? If the 1st, You could learn an instrument 😊. Most students can play songs in the key of G on guitar by 4mo. You could surprise yourself…

I dont know if lennon & maca could live with 30 mins songwriting, but I will try, it's a start, you showed us your phone 'dont be so humble, you are not that great' ;)... yeah, don't take others music is rule number 1 for successful songwriting, Lennon & macartney did'nt start going to a song wirting class, they started a group, if you get an idea at a ramdom time,,, drop life and finish the song there and then, tell your boss 'it's important'.. SPACE,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, MAKE SPACE,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, & dont fear humiliation.
