-----------Contents-----------
00:00 Intro
00:52 Setup- putting the tender alongside, getting the lines ready - double sheet-bends, never bowline-on-bowline, then flaking the lines.
02:33 Approach-check your depth, find out about any cross currents;
03:16 Drop- put out as much chain as possible;
05:05 Securing- feed the line out to the person securing to shore, drop some more anchor chain if needed;
06:46 Final adjustments- make sure you are happy with the depth, make sure there is some tension in the system;
Key takeaways:
1. Have your shoreline ready;
2. Spring lines form an X if you are on a cat;
3. Snub your anchor to take the load off the windlass.
4. Don't tighten up the anchor chain with your windlass!
5. Visit Cumberland Bay in Saint Vincent. It's Beautiful.

Great video. Which knot would you use to tie to the palm tree? And if instead of a palm tree you tie it to a rock/stone (better in a rock below or above water level?). Extra beer if all questions answered! ,)

thanks for the good explanation. What was the reason you tie up to the palmtree and not just with the anker?

That’s so the boat doesn’t swing, and allows us to get closer to the shore.

Just found your channel and will subscribe. Why do you not like bow lines to tie multiple lines?
@SailingVirgins
@SailingVirgins 4 жыл бұрын
Because they put too much stress on the line. At best it chafes the line. At worst it cuts through itself. Double sheet bends are much, much better.

Hi Jesse, bowline-on-bowline weakens lines. And it takes twice as long to tie. At best, it creates chafed ends to the lines. At worst it is a weak spot that will fail first. Double sheet-bend is a much better knot to join synthetic lines. Hope that helps.

so who owns the tree you tired up to .. since it is in front of a building i am sure you had to ask ? to use their tree ..did it cost anything to use the tree ? . what did you tip the guy to tie you up , or was buying the food good enough ? sorry if i missed it in the video..

Yes Hale the locals there help with the stern line, and get paid around 20ECD for their trouble. They don’t consider the trees “their property”, they just wish to be treated fairly. They are good people in Cumberland Bay. The same can’t be said for all the bays, but Cumberland has good vibes.

Your videos are full of information and inspiration as well. But I am shocked in this video that it is allowed to anchor to a tree. In my country Turkey it is forbidden since it damages trees. Councils made places to anchor.

It's fine in the Caribbean Elgin. Perhaps it depends on the trees. We keep coming back to the same tree and she looks as strong as ever!

In Mexico's Sea of Cortez we do not need to tie to shore so I have a question. Since the anchor is set and you are facing windward, is tieing to shore in case the wind shifts? This is because the anchor is on a steep slope and will only set toward shore? So if the wind changes and is coming off shore the line to the palm is your anchor. You did not mention tides. If you did this at low tide, do you want the chain and line tight? We have a 5' tide so it would make a difference. You just adjust with the tide changes? I think I just answered my own questions but I want to be sure.
