How to Apply the Improvised Tourniquet:
Step 1: Apply the tourniquet 2-3 inches above the wound
Step 2: Place bandage above the wound and tie one over-hand knot
Step 3: Place long thin implement above the bandage and tie a second knot
Step 4: Keep rotating the implement until the bleeding stops
Step 5: Wrap excess around the implement and tie a third knot to secure
Step 6: Remember time of application to inform emergency services
• Never remove a tourniquet yourself. It can cause serious complications
• If the bleeding doesn’t stop, apply a second tourniquet above the first
• Do not cover tourniquet so it is visible to emergency services

Question, let’s just say you are in a pretty dire situation. You mentioned time is very important yeah? What is the maximum amount of time you can leave it on safely? And Can removing it be considered a threat to the wound?

Having a tourniquet in place for two or fewer hours - the time in which most patients can get to a hospital - should not have any ill effects beyond those caused by the injury requiring the tourniquet. It typically takes at least 4 to 6 hours for tourniquets to cause harm. If you find yourself in a situation where the only option available is to use a tourniquet, please do not remove it yourself and let the emergency services do it. This is because they need to be removed carefully to prevent complications.

I was taught that the tourniquet should only be applied in 4 places - biceps and thighs. Is that wrong?
