Why you are applying sunscreen incorrectly - the truth about sunscreen - Dr James Gill
Sunscreen is ubiquitous. Surely applying sunscreen is a simple as squeezing it out of the tube, and rubbing it on your body. However, it turns out that how are you apply the sunscreen is almost as important as the SPF value on the sunscreen bottle.
When applying suncream, we should use one fingertip unit, sufficient to cover an area about the size of your hand. If we are spreading suncream thinner than this, we are going to be getting significantly less protection than is stated on the bottle.
Simple rule of thumb, is that the Sun Protection Factor, talks about filtering UVB rays, where is the star rating, talks about filtering UVA rays

Wonderful video. All facts, no waffling. Tip for anyone considering asian sunscreens, which many say are more comfortable to wear and thus good for daily use - they use a PA rating system to denote UVA protection, with PA++++ being the highest level of protection!

It’s crazy how attitudes towards sun protection have changed. In the 70s there was a popular sunscreen brand called “Sea and Ski”. My dad and uncles, being avid mountaineers, called it “Sky and Fry”. It was spf 15 and completely inadequate for sun exposure at altitude. As for myself, also an avid mountaineer and outdoorsman, I rarely use sunscreen but I cover every inch of exposed skin with clothing. I recommend a domino mask under your sunglasses for your nose and the skin around your eyes, which it’s otherwise hard to cover with a sun baklava. People always think I’m crazy, but I tell you what I never am - sunburned. By the way I just learned Dr. Gill was on Season 5 of Bear Gryll’s The Island! Crazy! But hard to watch Dr. Gill have a tough time of things, especially when he was clearly one of the more capable and level headed of the participants.

I used to get burned to the point of blistering as a kid (natural blonde). If you want to see how much sun damages your skin, just look at how nice and supple the skin looks on your bottom 🍑 compared to where you’ve received sun exposure your entire life. Protect that skin, kids!!

Wow, fortuitous timing. I’m on vacation and going snorkeling tomorrow. I’ll be putting sunscreen on before we head out instead of doing it on the boat. I also had no idea there was a separate UVA rating - it isn’t printed on my USA-market blue lizard “SPF 50+” sunscreen.

Thank you so much for this video! As someone at a high risk for skin cancer because of fare skin and a sensitivity to the sun caused by sensory processing disorder it’s very helpful understanding the science of sunscreen and sunscreen ratings. If I don’t wear my sunglasses, hiking hat, and front zip long sleeved bathing suit that has shorts on the bottom to the beach I get sun poisoning and my eyes swell shut and I burn like crazy regardless of what SPF I use or how I use it so I take my sun protection seriously.

I hate the feel of it too! Just visited a buddy in Japan in May, grabbed a bottle of Nivea Super Water Gel 50… fell in love with it. It just disappears like water with no strong scent. Now back in the states, the only place I can find it is (marked up in price) on Amazon. It has Japanese writing so I fear it may be the only place it is sold. 😩

I understand the importance of sunscreen but there is a skincare rule going round that you should wear it everyday but LUSH times newspaper had an article talking about a study carried out determining that it’s not healthy as it leads to lack of sun exposure and lots of issues related to that even a number of deaths in certain parts of Europe were related to lack of sun. So I believe it’s another everything in moderation thing.

Never knew about UVA and the rating system, thanks! I am brown (half Indian heritage) and have never had a conventional sunburn. I just tan even when in searing heat on holiday in Turkey. I have heard that darker people are less likely to get skin cancer (melanin protection) but more likely to die if they get it. Is that true and if so, is it because we spot it later on average? I rarely used sunscreen throughout my life, although I do now. I'm debating getting a full mole map at some point too.

it's important to ensure that the sunscreen is reef safe, as for the vit d effect, the vitamin d is produced in the skin, and will still occur with sunscreen, but will be reduced

Can you talk about UV blocking and vitamin D production? About why skin cancer rates and sun exposure worldwide don't have a correlation (sun starved Europe has higher skin cancer rates than almost anywhere else)? Why skin cancer has exploded since the general use of sunscreen despite people protecting themselves better? About chemicals and byproducts leaking into the blood stream (I've read studies about it, but as I recall it wasn't a concerning amount with normal use, but here we are talking applying it every day)? I am not bashing sunscreen, just asking questions I find interesting. And I know we can just take oral vitamin D, I just think we should talk about it when talking about sun screen. And just so I don't get crucified as an anti science conspiracy theorist sunscreen denying extremist: Sunburn is bad for you. Don't get sunburn.
@DrJamesGill
@DrJamesGill 9 ай бұрын
i think that i outlined why skin cancer rates have increased along with utilisation of sunscreen. Use of sunscreen, as meant that people spend longer in the Sun. If people spent longer in the Sun without the suncream, it will be even worse Hence, why years ago, skin cancer tended to be associated with an outdoor professions, such as farmers etc, but now is much more generalised, as everybody wants a summer Tan
