How to Archive Your Film Negatives - My Step-by-Step Process

Күн бұрынIn this video I'll walk you through my process of archiving 35mm and 120 film negatives, as well as talk through how to request your negatives from your lab. When I first started film photography, I never requested my negatives and I kick myself every day for not doing that. Always request your film negatives, people! I'll let you know why in this video. Serious question: Why would they ask if you want your negatives back? Shouldn't it be standard procedure to return the developed negatives?

Probably for people who are pretty entry level or just a super casual shooter who doesn’t want to store extra stuff, or family’s restoring old photos

I was wondering the same thing seeing as the negative is your actual picture and the print is just a copy.

Thank you for this video. Right now I have all of our (mine and my parents negatives in boxes). I also have all of my grandparents negatives as well. Right now I am sorting the photos but will later have to organize and sort through negatives. I am dreading it but it has to be done.

I never touch my negatives with my bare hands, I always wear nitrile, latex or cotton gloves.

I generally do too! Just didn’t have any currently. Kept my hands on the edges of the film to keep oils off the negatives.

There are top loading sleeves but limited to 4 to a row. I just want to buy the sleeves to account and protect the most valuable negatives. Usually old vintage shots.

@@silendt sometimes I’ll just slot it in behind another row to keep them all on a page. If it’s a really important project, I’ll bleed the extra onto a separate page.

Hi there! I was wondering if you have any advice on that, I started to archive my negatives but they have beensitting rolled in those plastic tubes after I got them developed. They are super curly now and after getting them into sleeves it just becomes one giant rolling piece of negatives. Have you got any idea how I could flatten them? Placing heavy objects on it doesn't seem to be working

is it possible to put the negatives in a binder that is not so dark and is probably exposed to light?

I use microfiber gloves! Just forgot them for this video and made sure I only had contact with the edges.

HI, good advice and guidance. Just wondering if anyone could suggest which is a better long term storage option - glassine or polypropylene/polyethylene sleeves.

I believe either is fine but I personally use (not coated!!) polyethylene sleeves.

I wouldn’t recommend it! My gloves just weren’t going to arrive on time when I originally filmed this video. Any kind of non-stick or microfiber gloves work great. Amazon has some really cheap ones!
