A beginner's guide to arrangement for DnB. Drum and Bass, like most electronic dancefloor music, is structured in 16 bar phrases. The song consists of an intro, build up, drops (body), breakdown and outros. You can experiment with automation and effects to further enhance the arrangement of the track, generating tension and release for the listener throughout.

That's me, the guy staring at a blank arrangement window, wondering where to begin. "Tracing" an existing song's structure is so helpful in getting over that hump.

wow as a long time noob and watching hundreds if not thousands of videos I stumbled on to this, 1st off big ups and massive respect 2nd this is by far one of the most easy to understand and follow guides I've seen. I love that you weren't about the actual music but focused on techniques over content. Lastly I found you saif pun intended as an instructor you came across as educated yet never elitist. Your normalcy was key for me , so many other videos the host plays on a persona where I felt I was listening to an equal not an identity. Thank you I will be sure to watch more of your videos and hopefully leave more comments to help the algorithm so others can find you.

Man I love this channel, you're proper talented at this, and while I love Drum N Bass I've never been able to arrange it even tho i can make the loops and the sounds that fit. Love it. Edit: love it especially because you talk about it as a DJ as well as a producer, and this is, I feel, very important.

Not enough tutorials on YT discuss making music at this level. Many tutorials just discuss the technicalities of individual instruments and sound design. Arrangement and putting stuff together to actually make some music is not highlighted enough

Absolutely. I did think about this when I was asked to make a video about it. It's not the kind of thing you can really show in an entertaining way but it's absolutely essential to know when you are laying down an arrangement.

Great vid, clear and concise, and covering a specific topic I haven't seen online so far. Also, the algorithm must not like you; I've been digging through KZfaq Music production videos pretty heavily since 2019, and only in fall of 2023 is your channel popping up on my feed. I feel like I've been deprived all this time!

I have a question about the drop bars... suppose in the first drop we have 16 bars, in the second drop it can have 32 bars?
@BeckySaifMusic
@BeckySaifMusic 2 жыл бұрын
You mean the breakdown to be 32 bars? Yes I've seen this happen before. I've also seen the intro be 32 bars and the breakdown be 16 bars.
2 жыл бұрын
@@BeckySaifMusic Yes. In my case, the arrangement looked like this: Intro - 8 bars, build up - 4 bars, first drop - 16 bars, breakdown - 16 bars, second build up - 8 bars, second drop (with genre variation for Drumstep ) - 32 bars, and another - 8 bars It's looks wierd?

@BeckySaifMusic
@BeckySaifMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@ I'd be careful with the 4 bar build up. You need to work in 16 bar sections. So an 8 bar intro and 8 bar build up could work, making it 16 bars to the drop. Theres nothing wrong with having a 16 bar intro and a 32 bar breakdown (2 x 16 bars), so long as each section is 16 bars.
@BeckySaifMusic

Best thing to do is get a reference track of a piece of music that is already released and copy the arrangement from it.

@@BeckySaifMusic the beggining bit with the track arrangement. Like I been doing it long enough to know anyway but that's fucking massive to be able to let people drop markers on tracks they already know and use them to make their own track templates.

@@BeckySaifMusic have you used any other sequencers other than ableton? Just wondering how they compare. I'm an old fuck so I remember when ableton came out haha. Just seems to have gone from strength to strength yet FL studio (what I currently use) has pretty much got more bloody annoying.
@BeckySaifMusic
@BeckySaifMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@AdamNRG316 I mainly used Logic before (up to Logic X). I used Pro-Tools as well but more for engineering studio sessions. I've occasionally used Reason when re-wiring to Logic as well. I'd say Ableton is the front running DAW at the moment. A lot of people rave about Bitwig but I haven't looked at it. FL Studio is great because it's affordable and you don't pay for updates. Ableton is worth it though. It's a power horse and the additional live performance aspect makes it stand out amongst other DAWs.
