I found using a G/C clamp better as you can position the buttons better, apply the right amount of pressure to mate the button & the tack and there's less scope for deforming the buttons or damaging the clothing when they're hit too hard or mis-struck by a hammer. A square of leather can be used to protect the outward face of the button/tack face for perfect installation. 👍👍👍

I have a pair of jeans that the button came apart. There is no damage to the fabric and I have all the pieces to the button. Is there a tool kit for this? Trying to find name of the tool I would need.

you dont. this style button is very similar to a rivet ot eyelet in which the stick part of the button hammers into the front and bends so it's not removable.

Do you have to cut a hole into the fabric before putting the thing in ?

The tip is pointed, so you should be able to work it between the fibers of the fabric. Breaking the fibers will cause fabric to rip after a few weeks.

I suggest you try hammering it more or try a different style of stud/button. Hope it works ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

You first need to gently tap the pin through the fabric fully into the button. Then put the face of the button onto a hard concrete surface (protected by a few sheet of paper) and hammer hard until the pin expands into the button, fully clamping the fabric. Heavy jeans require a button with a longer pin which allows for the 2 layers of thick denim. The final hammering that expands the pin needs to be a lot harder than most people realize. Clothing factories use a hydraulic press, set to stop at the required overall length of the button..
