Great video, I've always just glued before but this helped me get my skirting board tight to the wall. One tip I have - before filling in the holes with wood filler, etc - put a blob of plumber's putty into the screw head. If you ever need to remove the skirts later, it's much easier to re-engage with the head this way after digging the filler out.

Mate !!! You made fixing that skirt so easy......Brilliant tips......unbelievable !! I used to faff about.......clearance hole.......(one end first)........masonry.....knock in a plug.....screw first hole......move along to next........Jeesh....... loved the simple technique for wacking the plug straight through too !! : )

I've struggled with fitting skirting before. I just tried this technique and it really helped me. I went with 5.5mm for both masonry and wood drill bits and i shortened the screws to 5x50mm. Cheers!

Thank you for the video. Just fixed a skirting that had been glued and had come away from the wall. I usually would just get someone else to do this at my expense but had a go after watching this and it all went to plan apart from using a slightly different size screw and raw plug as the DIY store didn't have all the stock in. Anway I am pleased at the result and thank you again.

Another tip for people is, notice he’s fixing as near to the top of the Skirt just below the moulding. He’s not screwing into the centre of the flat bit. This means it will be less inclined to pull the bottom in and will give good room for getting a packer behind. You can also lift the skirt off after drilling and pack out below you’re fixing holes before you screw them in. Stick a bit of plaster board or anything below the fixing holes with a bit of grip fill

Awesome video. I stumbled across this after securing skirting with grip fill only, only to have them come partially loose when fitting carpet. I found having the boards already grip filled into place made this method even easier. I will do that for all future rooms. Thanks for posting.

Ian Searle thanks for your comment. A lot of less experienced people will tell you to gripfil only but as you have found out this is not the case. I use another method drill a small hole in skirting and insert a pin nail lay skirting into position and tap nail to mark the wall . Remove skirting and locate the mark left by nail , drill wall and insert dowel replace skirting and tap nail just below surface and into dowel now you only have a small hole to fill I also use liquid nails

Hemingford recycled designs I've never seen anyone use this method but sounds like a bloody good idea. Similar to the wooden plugs they used to use years ago. Everyday's a school day. When fitting next length it will be difficult to get a butt joint to fit correctly .A mitre joint cut first on both bits would be easier?

Great vid thanks. I've just been fitting some where the plastering was done with old skirt in place. I was replacing with taller skirt so it went about 20 mm above the plastering. My problem was the plaster came right away from the wall, way out of plumb. I opted to fit the skirting plumb but then I'm left with a pretty big gap between wall and skirting. What would you do in this situation? Many thanks

Hi, loving the tutorials. I'm about to fit mdf skirting boards to a newly built porch. One issue I have is where the new plasterboard wall meets the existing wall. The new wall is angled inwards and so when I place the skirting up to it there's about 10mm of gap. The plaster has been chiselled away but there's still a huge gap. Both ends will be mitres. Any suggestions ?

Does the wall behind the skirting board need replastering/filling or is the gap ok? It won't cause any issues for heatloss or anything else would it?

Hi, what type of screws do you use? Lots of the screws I’m looking at, the head would barely be bigger than the 6mm hole drilled to accept the Rawls. Does it matter that the Rawls are deep into the wall? I’ve got 18mm skirts but the walls are crumbly so want to go deep enough and the Rawls all seem to only be about 28-30mm?! Any advice would be great. I really like the way you’ve done this as it seems a lot simpler than methods I’ve used before with drilling the skirt, marking the hole and then removing the skirt to drill into the wall.

I used 3 inch by no.10 wood screws so the head is bigger than the 5.5mm hole. Send the plug in deep enough to get a good bite. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and don't forget to like share and subscribe to help the channel grow 👍🏼

Great video. Once you use the sds to drill into the masonry is it worth the effort to suck out/hoover the masonry dust out of the hole, before putting in the plug? Or would you say, this is not necessary?

Rex Banner thanks for your comment. In my opinion hoovering the dust is unnecessary. The spiral of the drill bit clears most of the dust from the hole and you always drill a little deeper than you need so nothing fouls the plug and screw. On an old house nobody expect square walls, except of making a renovation. I think a fill with polyurethane foam in the side of the floor boards will be better. By the way nice job.

Great Video as I am trying to install mdf baseboards against concrete. In North America we use inches instead of mm unfortunately. I used yellow #8 drywall plugs with the same diameter of drill bit and #8 screws. I discovered that wouldn't work as the wall plugs wouldn't go through the hole due to its lip. What kind and size of plugs did you use? Thanks

Can you do a video on how to measure the wall and then the skirting board so you know exactly the lengths you need to cut to cope it. Then the length it needs to be after coping. No online videos show how to measure etc so you don't end up cutting too short or too long before coping, then after coping etc

Hi. I think this is a great video. I need to fit new skirting boards in our new home. I want to fix in screws, but I’m getting told not to use screws and use adhesive, as the screws will discolour the surrounding woodwork. Any thoughts?

dyingfly the trouble with using adhesive is it only sticks to the paint or plaster, it's not a good fix. If your walls are out slightly the adhesive won't even touch parts of the wall. This is a tried and trusted method for years and it works. People use adhesive because it's fast but there will always be problems with it. If you're worried about the screws staining through then put a bit of oil based undercoat paint on the head of the screw before you fill over them and that will stop any stain. But I have never in 20 years had staining from screws. Hope this helps you and if you have any more questions don't hesitate 👍🏼👍🏼

nick evans You can buy plug cutters that cut a wooden pellet to fit in the screw hole. They get glued in then cut and sanded flush before painting! Hope this helps

super big tip.... use some mortar to fill in all irregular gaps behind skirt board so no blocking (backer) is needed and board will be 90 to floor. no brainer here

If your working on the ground floor then You shouldn’t have your plaster or mortar down to the floor for damp/ moister purposes.. so better to use a Packer

Your cuts for the skirting boards were perfect. I was just wondering how you'd deal with skirting that touches either side of the door frame only it sits a little proud of the architrave. Trim, sand, or something else?

First of all why is it proud? Could you knock some plaster away? Sometimes just a little chamfer will do to blend it in. Thanks for watching

@@spendtimesavemoneydiy Thanks for replying, mate. Yeah, it's about 3-5mm proud of the door architrave. I think the skirting was a recent addition because it's actually quite ornate and nice whereas the door architrave is in good nick but a little plain.

You could mitre a 45deg at the end of the skirting and then use a small piece with 2x22.5deg mitres. Like this www.thisiscarpentry.com/2014/03/21/nip-tuck-22-12-wall-returns/

Kevin McGovern thanks for your comment. I used a 3 inch ten screw which the metric equivalent is 70mm x 5mm. The heads of the screws are bigger than 5.5mm so they pulled the skirting in nicely. Thanks for watching and be sure to like, share and subscribe to help the channel grow 👍🏼

Great video! I have the same holes at the bottom of my walls where the skirting is meant to go, any tips on how to fill the gaps before I fit the skirting? I would like to make the wall even before fitting the skirting instead of placing plaster boards or pieces of wood between the skirting and wall. Thanks!

@@spendtimesavemoneydiy Agree. I’ve used expanding foam and trimmed with an oscillating tool. Not perfect, but worked relatively well to provide support.

I was thinking of replacing mine.but when I ripped one off.it looked like it did behind yours.so I replasterd it and put it back.I’d never plastered before but done a good job at that.but now I wish I ripped them all off a replaced them after seeing this.lol

Hi mate, appreciate your videos thank you. If I could just pick your brain a sec please I've bought everything you've listed (you also kindly mentioned the code for the plugs and screws so I have the exact ones). The thing is, you said to use a 5.5mm masonry bit but I don't seem to be able to knock the plug with the screw through the board the way you do. It's way too tight, any ideas please?

Just a quick question.. shouldn’t you put a screw at the top and bottom of each area you drill to keep both parts of the trim board equal against the wall?

It the plaster work let you it is a good idea especially on timber skirting to stop it cupping

@@spendtimesavemoneydiy I just did my base boards and decided to use glue at the top and bottom.. So hopefully one screw will be good and there won't be any cupping.

I’m really struggling to send the screw in the wall,,,once it gets about half way it really really tight and have to really force it in with the hammer on my dewalt cordless,,,have you any idea why mate 👍👍

Explore With Ant is the hole deep enough? Are the screws too big for the plug? Or you could try hammering the screw and plug in deeper before you start to screwdrive!? Let me know how you get on 👍🏼

Spend Time, Save Money, DIY yea mate hole is deep enough and and using the same bits as you buy for some reason it doesn’t want to go in the way your doin it so I’ve done all the holes and then removed the skirting then put the plugs in the wall but it just doesn’t want to go in when get half way,,,the drill is spinning on the screw a bit and I’m putting loads of pressure on the drill,,really tight I think lol

James J I wouldn't recommend a nail gun, chances are the nails will hit the brick and just bend. I used red plugs for a 5.5mm hole and 3" x 10 screws or 75mm x 4.5 if you use metric. Thanks for watching 👍🏼

I've seen joiners use expanding foam to fix skirting to a wall. It's surprisingly easy and strong. It's this good practice?

mdf is like a sponge for water i wouldnt fit this period if i had to it would be primed and undecoated several times

Im applying some pre-made wainscoting/beadboard to my house, same setup as in this video..the MDF Paneling is 9mm thick and sits behind the skirting..would the same process apply for fixing the paneling to the wall? Or is an adhesive only required (i.e..liquid nails)?.

scaifedogg you would probably get away with just using a grab adhesive but you may need a couple of screws just to hold it until the adhesive dries. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching 👍🏼

Hi there, Great video! Thanks for the tips and help. If I could get some advice that would be great. Trying to fit MDF skirting into brick wall. Was considering to plaster the bottom to make it level with the wall and then gluing/screwing, but I've read that's not good for moisture. I have a big gap between where the laminate is layed and the skirting. I took off really old big wooden skirting and I'm replacing it with a smaller mdf skirting, so there will be gaps at the top. And if I place the new mdf skirting, it falls down too low on the wall. Not sure what the best way to go about getting the skirting up and covering the hole here would be. Thanks!!

Craig Peel the 5.5 sds bit struggles going through 22mm mdf and I didn't have a 5.5 wood bit but it worked perfectly well the way I showed here! Thanks for watching 👍🏼
