How To Attract More Bucks To Your Hunting Land

Attracting bucks to your hunting land takes a lot more that great habitat - it takes a separation of habitat that is not full of doe family groups. Dispersing yearling bucks leave their home due to female social pressure. The last thing that a young buck wants to do, is to move his average mile and a half distance to a new home, only to find that home being overrun by female social pressure. Separated food sources, bedding areas and enough room leftover for bucks to travel and live their daily, daylight life is necessary for your land to be attractive to bucks. Too many does, large, single food sources and open cover creates an environment that is not condusive for attracting bucks to your land. Here are some tips for making sure that your land is attractive to a large supply of bucks, each fall.

You're giving away your knowledge for free! I appreciate it, have applied and enjoyed much of it. I hunt the more pressured states in the northeast & mid Atlantic. It started with your advice on weather that I thought was going to be just like the "moon charts" which turned out mostly useless for me. I've now had most success on cold fronts, drops in wind speeds, high barometer with temp drops, you have proven to know your stuff. Thank you Jeff.

Thank you very much and you are welcome! There is so little quality whitetail info online that it makes me want to work very hard to create as much as possible. That's awesome to hear about your success too 👍 Keep in mind that this content comes out of some of the highest hunter number states in the country ☺️ Probably a great fit for you! I really appreciate the feedback!

Jeff I did a 3 acre hinge cut the way you have shown many of us.put a 1/2 acre kill plot.about 200 yds from it in the middle of 120 acres.put out 5 vines and scrapes pissed in all of them several times.lol.have a couple vids of the deer smelling the scrapes and pissing with the vine.so cool Jeff there are many gadgets out there for bowhunting.none beats this vine trick.free just a little work and let it do its magic lol.but Jeff I have to say that hinge cut changed everything at the upper end where we put it.all for the best.1st year owning this ground.i applied as much of your knowledge as I could.and it all looks great.i want to thank you from one bowhunter to another very appreciative.also Jeff the one side of this ground has 671 acres boarding it that no one was ever aloud to hunt.so I'm really trying to see what might come out of that ground.thats why we hinged 3 acres.between the ag fields and that 671.trying to stop some of the big boys.again Jeff thanks alot.keep pumping out these great vids and I'm gonna have me a super honeyhole.lol

Pretty sure we are seeing "The change" here in West Central MN. The beans and corn are dying and drying, and the bucks are becoming more active in the wooded areas, and HAMMERING my green food plots(peas, oats, rye and a few soybeans). Can't thank you enough man. It's a great feeling to have success in my very first year of "serious" land management! Makes all of the work, completely worth it!

Great information! Guess that explains why I see nothing but does until mid November and then young bucks flood my cameras. Only have a few acres to hunt and about 6-8 does that frequent my food with only one or two mature bucks that move through at night. I’m only about a mile from city limits, so I’m watching all of your videos trying to figure out how to make them feel safe enough to step out in daylight!

Jeff, Great comments...we have learned a lot from all your guidance this year., and have made many many changes as per your recommendations. The improvements you suggested are really coming together, and we appreciate all the help during your site visit. We are going to add some more rye in a couple of weeks on the bare spots. I will have to do a little better job next year killing the weeds etc. I'm looking forward to using the golf cart to get a little closer and not disturbing the deer, after my surgery. We still of course have some challenges getting in and out to stands. thanks for all the help, Bob

I appreciate your videos very much. But the area I hunt in southwest Missouri is full of both bucks and does. A very high pressured area all around me and just last night I watched several does along with 3 bucks one being a 170 class. Year after year they have done this and just like you said the bucks are on one side and the does are on the other. We have unreal thick bedding and the only alfalfa in the area. Outside of my small kill plots acorns are the primary food. Thanks again for good information.

And they stayed there until gun season was over. Thanks Dan

Jeff, This year I planted switchgrass in the open fields on my property with food plots in that switchgrass on the end farthest from the woods. The switchgrass made it to about 3 feet this year and next year I was hoping to add diversity to the switchgrass. What would you reccomended having in these pockets? Would you just spray grass selective herbicides and let them grow up on their own or would it be better to let some grow up and plant diversity such as conifers and different kinds of bushes in the other pockets?

Just a quick question for your thoughts on this. On a 40 acre parcel my family just bought, there’s a giant ag field on the north side bordering the land. On the west side is a gravel road and another ag field on the other side of the road as well, my grandparents previously owned this 40 acre parcel and it wasn’t hunted too often due to lack of really any deer staying on it. I’m just wondering if there would be any benefit to adding a couple of food plots to this land or not in the future. It would be tough to, because the only areas that could have food plots are Near the middle of the land, I could access the land from the gravel road but what I’m more concerned about is the bedding depth for does and bucks

Here is a question Jeff? If I plant say clover mixes, winter rye with brassicas. Great fall food plot forage. Then spring rolls around and my rye and clover is coming on good, should I spray the plots killing the clover to plant buck wheat. Because if I dont then I have spring and summer food plots? Since at least for me spring is when the new clover comes on good it seems it's a waste to even plant the clover. Thanks again for the videos!

Eric, thank you! That's kind of tough without seeing...BUT almost always if it isn't great for a food plot because of the risk of spooking deer, then the opposite is needed. Switchgrass is most often that opposite depending on the region. Good call!

Jeff, I planted a 50/50 mix of sweet peas and soy beans back in 04. I saw no bucks in the front field in front of the house nor does. As soon as the peas got a foot high we drew 10 to 12 bucks, no does, every early evening. They filtered in like clock work and I'm talking good bucks. My question is, are bucks more apt to want to forage on peas cus it was all bucks all the time.....

I built a good buck herd on my hunting property several years ago... Each Fall I would have my choice of bucks. However, that shifted to a Spring/Summer herd, and when season would hit in the fall, they would disappear. It has stayed that way, and Fall/winter is sparce with bucks. This is without a doe factory also, it seems I start seeing more does during the rut now, but the bucks arent showing up like they used to.

I would suspect the deer in your area to start filtering in during mid October this year? Big woods...but ag in the area they probably aren't any where near the land yet, especially after the disturbance. Hopefully some does will come in within the next 2-3 weeks...then some bucks after that. Next year at this time you should have a lot more deer...2021 even more. Bucks will slowly shift their activities around your land sooner, as the years progress.

I believe it can be changed! Thicker cover, fewer does, no summer food plots and great Fall plots that don't infringe on the depth of cover in the land are all key. Then the table is set 🙂 BUT, if you don't continue those same conditions throughout the entire season, the old bucks that were initially attracted...will leave.

Let's say you pick up 10 bucks over the course of the season like you say is possible or should be happening. How many do you think would make it to maturity say 5years old or older?

Probably 2. One will get hit by a car, a few will leave or other places, and the rest will be shot. A couple studs will hang around if you don’t harass them

It's a grapevine licking branch aka mock scrape. Deer put preorbital scent on the vine and interdigital on the ground. They use it for communication.

I don’t go into the bedding areas. I attract deer out of the area to the feeding and hunting areas. They have to have a safe place. Don’t make large changes to their habitat. I see guys making unnatural wide trails thru their properties. Animals notice changes and will sometimes avoid the area.

Eric Gilgenbach what does your parcel look like? Hardwoods? CRP? You’re property would probably be very attractive with good cover and a foos source that the deer aren’t getting from the ag such as brassicas, clover, cereal rye etc.

What the heck? Why would you leave a camera out and not have it working? All you're doing is leaving out to be possibly damaged or stolen without any return on that risk. If you are not getting bucks either a) be patient, or b) move your camera(s) to different and hopefully better areas. Sometimes all it takes is to move a cam a short distance to a trail deer are more active on and suddenly you see a bunch of deer that you hadn't before.

I am just now seeing bucks show up and during daylight. I talked to a few neighbors and they have lost their bucks. They moved a bit early this year which works for me because archery season opens the 28th. But this early movement came with odd behavior. I have sat and watched the bucks and they are already chasing does, the does however are not ready. I watched three six points, three different ages as if they were siblings from about three years old to a yearling all six points. That yearling is going to be a brute in a few years. All three were chasing does. And that's the third time I have seen bucks doing that including a eight point that was alone. I have another six on camera that's below my tree stand and a doe trying to run him off to no avail. This is on my five acre spot that all I can do is get them to come in daily as they pass from cover to cover. I put out alfalfa for the first time to attract axis deer and that brought the bucks in and a cow of a doe, doesn't normally work that way but it did. I have another 11 acres that I am cleaning up due to family and working with the neighbors there who also hunt their five acre properties to provide better cover and food sources both natural and feeders to help us all have better deer. Small parcel hunters should try this, it can help everyone. I love being able to sit and watch deer movement daily and all year, I can with almost certainty tell which deer will come from which direction and at what times. Even the bucks were predictable until this year.

Micah Venable to me it really depends why surrounds your 5 acres. Deer won’t stay on5 acres but you can defiantly have a good “pass through” property. I live on 5 acres in lapeer county MI surrounded by farm fields and I’ll tell you what I get at least 3 good bucks on cameras a year passing through and what not. All it takes is being there at the right time 👍🏻 good luck this season
