In this video, I demonstrate how to automate row numbers in Excel. This will be useful if you are looking for Excel to auto-generate a number sequence or create serial numbers for you. Row numbers can be used to revert back to an original sort order or create a useful ID for your records.
The video will also demonstrate auto-numbering in Excel after a new row has been inserted at the end of your data or between existing rows of data.
The methods shown in this video are:
1) Dragging the fill handle to auto-generate a number sequence
2) Using the Fill Series dialog box to generate a number sequence
3) Using the ROW function to generate a number sequence
4) Using the ROW function within an Excel table to further automate number sequence functionality
5) Using the RIGHT function to add leading zeros to your number sequence
6) Prefixing text to your number sequence, for example XYZ004. This can be achieved with concatenation
7) Using the new SEQUENCE function in Excel 365 with COUNTA to generate row numbers.

thank you for the information its been a great help, my next issue is I want the sequencing numbers to be locked, new entry seq lock, and few columns down another set of seq numbers locked as well. this means if a decision to add a new entry in the middle of the table it still takes the +1 of the last entry

This is great. However I have another dilemma where I have titles inbetween the rows that I need to count. How do I have a continuous counting, even when I delete the number from a cell to avoid counting titles?

=AGGREGATE(2, 7, A$1:A1) + 1 works better even if you delete rows or if you have filtered the table

Hi - I have a spreadsheet with 13 sheets. Each sheet has a table which tracks weekly data. Each week I manually add a new row to the top of the table for the newest weeks data and update the formatting and formula in the new row, for each sheet. I then manually update formulas about the table which tracks MIN, MAX, SUM and AVG. Is it possible to automate these steps for all 13 sheets?

Is there a way to use the formula but in a descending format as I need to insert a blank row above the last completed row and will automatically add the row number in the first column but it should show as “2” if the first completed row is assumed as row “1”?
