This is actually almost the opposite BUT I see a lot of aspiring cinematographers shooting at the lowest f/stop possible to make sure to get as little noise as possible BUT they don't consider, that they will be moving around all the time with a depth of field that is so small that their subject's eyes is almost never in focus - that means you won't have a sharp image for most of the time and then what good does the noise reduction do? TL:DR - Focus/sharpness is more important than avoiding noise - at least in my opinion.

You're using a mirrorless camera? No offense; but there's still a bit of noise in the video. One the problems I find with mirrorless cameras is the noise from their high ISO. Full body cameras are preferred in this situation because they allow one to lower the ISO to 200, and almost completely eliminate noise.The only thing that would need to be improved upon would be the lighting and pulling focus.

All good tips. I know you mention not wanting to tell people to get lights, but as an event shooter, they cost less than upgrading a camera or lens and can be rather essential for some shots. Small light panels can be pretty cheap (even ones with remote controls and phone apps). Toss one (or two since you have a remote to turn them on) on a light stand or hold it in your hand (above the subjects eye level) when you find yourself in a situation where the room is too dark to get a good shot. I went with a couple cheapo lights from Yongnuo that have worked well for the last few years.

About Battlestar Galactica which I agree is an awesome show. One of the best sci-fi shows of all time! I've always wondered if the noise in the image on that show has been left on purpose to reflect the "gritty" nature of the show. Especially the scenes on the hangar deck.

Great recommendation re prefering a higher ISO over cranking up light in post. The technical reason behind is quite simple, but nobody talks about it: The absolute level of the noise floor from the sensor is always (nearly) the same, but far below visibility in the lights. So, when cranking up the shadows in post, the noise floor gets amplified, too - that's where the ugly noise in the shadows comes from. Regarding your general recommendation regarding "always overexpose Log-footage" I would not fully agree with. Here my thoughts, backed from some experience: Indeed, Log profiles add a bit more headroom towards the lights (lets say up to 2 stops) - but this comes from how the camera SW encodes the sensor readout, assuming the sensor provides the exposure headroom in the lights. Good sensors tend to offer more dynamic headroom than linear readout and processing of the readoud in the camera (limitation of 8 or even 10 bits). That's why encoding the sensor readout with a Log-curve adds some headroom in the lights. But once you overexposed the sensor in the highlights it does not matter which picture profile you are in - the highlights are flat white, and no Log-curve will help any longer. So, my recommendation from some poor experience with just overexposing by 2 Stops in Log is - and, here we're getting in sync again: - Prefer higher ISO, especially when the camera has dual ISO - Watch the highlights, e.g. with false colors, histogram, wave form monitor, zebras. - If you need to expose for some 42 IRE (e.g. for getting a face exposed correctly), then give up the highlights A common mistake when using Log-profile on the camera is to set the HDMI output that goes into the monitor at a Rec709 conversion LUT and forcing the monitor to analyse the Rec709 HDMI output with its built-in exposure tools - this automatically leads to overexposed shots with the highlights gone. Instead, you need to set the HDMI output to native (here Log) and select the Rec709 conversion in the monitor. Another great help is to crank camera exposure up and watch the histogram, zebra, or waveform monitor and watch out when it start clipping. For example, my S1H clips slightly above 90%, and not at 100%. Hopes this helps to get clean and nicely exposed footage.

ISO is the sensor sensitivity and there’s a lot of interference in light. So when you increase the sensitivity you increase the interference because everything is amplified

A Bonus tip... Use dimmable LED lights for long-term ease and smooth experience. Else you will end up moving lights around your studio. Trust me this experience is not good. If you don't have the money wait for some time but invest in something which will add value not pain in your workflows.

If you know, you want a lowkey light set-up isn't a low iso better though? I saw a video on cinema IQ that adressed this where he also said that if you are filming in daylight, you should actually not go for the lowest possible ISO, but that a ISO a little higher actually performed better - and a low ISO actually treats your shadows better, than if you were to have the same exposure of those shadows with a higher ISO.
@HarvVideoAudioStuff
@HarvVideoAudioStuff 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely a lower iso for low key would be best, but this would be exposing ‘correctly’ for the scene no? 😛
@thokeJackass
@thokeJackass 4 жыл бұрын
@@HarvVideoAudioStuff yes, you are right. I meant in regards to "exposing to tur right" - sometimes in a low key scene you dont have to bump the iso up as much as one might think - even when shooting log. If that makes sense

Do you have any suggestions as to what could be causing EXTREME noise during a properly-lit shoot? I shot a conference at f2.8, native ISO 3200 (bmpcc 6k) and the presenters were green on the false colors. But they were incredibly noisy. Then the black drapes (less surprisingly) behind them were just lit up with noise. It did this both in braw and ProRes. Converting to 709 seemed to help some but I still had to apply NR to the point where the faces became blobs to make the footage usable. Again, the faces were properly exposed. Ideas?

Hmm this does sound unusual, has this happened since or was it just on this occasion? Have you run some test shots to see if it’s a fault with the camera? I’ve heard of sensors failing before and high noise being one of the signs, however this was on earlier Sony alpha cameras. Was the event well lit?
@HikingWithCooper
@HikingWithCooper 2 жыл бұрын
@@HarvVideoAudioStuff Hi, thanks for replying. It wasn't lit how I'd want it to be but histogram and waveform were fine. A bit to the left but not crushed. Plus the green areas from false colors still had tons of noise. This was on ProRes. I had a similar issue recently with braw, granted the lighting was less sufficient there but was still brighter than any night shots I would want to get.
