How to Avoid Rental Car Repairs You Didn’t Cause!

Whenever you rent a car, there’s a risk that you’ll get charged for repairs for things that you didn’t do or weren’t your fault. Do this one thing, and you’ll GREATLY reduce the likelihood of this happening to you - and it’s NOT buying their insurance (have your own)!
We recently rented a car from Budget/Avis (they are both the same company as of this filming), but what happened to us could happen at any car rental company. We got charged 6 months after the rental to repair something we didn’t do.
On the last day of our rental, we noticed a bubble forming on the front driver’s side tire sidewall. It wasn’t readily visible, only sunlight causing a shadow under it made it apparent. There were no scuffs, cuts, abrasions or apparent evidence of object damage. DirtFarmerJay was the sole driver and is certain there was no curb or similar object strikes. We had a 30-mile drive to the airport, so we drove there carefully and reported the bubble to the staff member in the return area.
We wanted to be sure that the bubble was seen and that the car did not go out to the next person, putting that driver at risk.
Six months later, we got a letter from Budget indicating they were getting ready to charge us $97 against the card on file. We wrote them a response in a very courteous manner, asking them not to charge this back to us, as we are confident that we did not cause this and sharing the same narrative mentioned earlier. About a month later, we got another letter indicating that it was their position it was our fault and the charge was made.
HOW CAN YOU MAKE SURE THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN TO YOU?
Simple. Whether it’s the policy of the company or not, or if they or you are rushed when it comes time to pick up your car, do this simple but highly effective thing. INSPECT THE CAR. Take a couple of walks around the car, checking fenders, mirrors, glass, head and tail lights, trim, paint, AND the tires. Even is something appears minor, have the staff person note it. They have the form and diagram right there with them to do so.
If we had done this (shame on us!), it’s highly likely we would have avoided this. It’s possible that the bubble was forming during our week-plus rental, so they still could have taken the path they did, but having an inspection would have put the odds of this not happening in our favor.
One last thought. Budget had the opportunity to rise to the occasion and invest in the relationship and value a customer that they invested tons of advertising dollars to acquire. Instead, they choose to invoke their contract. We’re not mad, just disappointed. Our trust with them is broken and so really think twice before renting from them again.
Insights? Comments? Experience with this type of situation? Let us hear from you in the comment section below!
IMPORTANT NOTE: It goes ALMOST without saying, but honesty is the best policy. If you damage the car or someone damages it while it was in your possession, own up to it. That’s the right thing to do. And, that is what we would have done if we had indeed damaged the car. Just sayin’!

Whenever I rent a car, I’m always in a hurry to get out on the road, perhaps because I’ve been in a long line at the counter. Your extra two minute suggestion is a practical one. Thank you, from where I sit. Good word choice.

I was driving my rental car and the thing got dented from a little love tap with the true next to it. I was freaking out because I had to return it within the next two days and I knew my dealership was about to charge me so much to fix it along with other fees but my friend recommended this place in wisconsin called acci-dent and they do same day paintless dent repair. I brought it in and got it back within the same day and it looked good as new. I have never been so relieved, plus it was a fraction of the cost. So thankful companies like this exist

I recently subscribed to the channel and enjoy each one I watch. One thing I could suggest for this video or creating another sequel is demonstrating how you do a pre inspection on a rental vehicle to note any damages or issues that may arise. I personally had the same issue my first time and have since done a walk through visually looking and mentally noting whilst recording on my smartphone the whole process. Cheers from Canada

FYI many credit cards will cover the cost of repairs to a rental car if you use their card. I have used this before with a MasterCard. I damaged the car and had to pay for the damage to the rental car company (Budget). I called the 800 number on the back of the card I used and they told me to send them a copy of the bill and I received a check about a week later made out to me to cover the bill.

That doesn't always work in instances where you had an accident and your rental is being covered by your insurance company's "Rental Car" option if you have it.

Many here suggest to take photos. That won't work. Because I use my own insurance, I'm very thorough in inspecting the car before I take it out of the rental place. When I return it, I always ask the person to check the car and make sure everything is fine before I leave. I make photos and videos in case there's any damage. But I got to say that experience I'm having right now with Avis/Budget company is on another level. Today I got a letter from Avis telling me that my card will be charged $477 for a glass damage on a car which I rented from them 6 months ago. There was no damage, the Avis person did inspection but all that doesn't matter. When ask for the proof, they say they cannot send it to me. FRAUD as hell.

Sorry to hear of your poor experience. The car rental companies work to shed as much liability as they can, and apparently they've gotten good at it!

They cannot charge you for what comes down to normal wear and tear. Their course of action should have been to contact the tyre supplier. You were not guilty, and ought not to have paid anything. Better still, with today's phones, video around the car twice, from both angles backwards and forwards, plus the interior. It only takes a few minutes, but could save you lots of money. Ensure that the assistants are included in the video to make sure of the time and date, and location. I personally would have requested my money back from the card company.

Hi. I would have told them that since you are paying for the replacement of the tire you want that tire. :)

Those types of bubbles are caused over inflation, likely caused by a porter or employee of budget. Increasing the tire pressure above the manufacturer's recommended PSI is very easily done and often unintentionally overlooked. Tires are usually topped off with air and driven to gas stations before/after rentals to decrease the chance of flat spots developing if a car sits on a hot lot without being rented for a while, to spot any leaks, and to decrease the chance of a flat or blowout with the next customer. Shame on Budget. If it was a bubble caused by negligence of the driver there would be irepperable scuffs, chunk out or cracks. Speaking from years of dealership and CDL experience. I would rebuttal budget once more if I was you from a matter of principal. Good luck to you

I just sent Avis the link to your video. I hope they realize how much bad publicity they will get due their insistence on charging you that $97-- just because they could. That $97 charge will cost them a heck of a lot more than what they charged your card for. I certainly will not choose them for car rental after watching this.

Jay -- I'm not sure how much your advice is worth. Yes, you should inspect the car. But, as you said, the bubble on the tire was hard to see except in bright sunlight. Or, perhaps, there was a defect in the tire that required a few more miles of travel before it manifested itself. It's likely the defect would have been missed in an inspection.

A tire bubble can also be caused by hitting a pothole. The replacement cost seemed reasonable, however if you didn't cause the damage that is still too much, Your insurance company likely would have covered under Property Damage Liability coverage without a deductible. You did the right thing reporting it and potentially preventing someone else from getting hurt. No good deed goes unpunished. I suggest whenever renting a vehicle or using a dealer loaner car always take pictures of all 4 corners of the vehicle from a few feet away, this should capture the entire vehicle and you can always zoom in to check for prior damage in a case like this.

Well problem with that is went you inspect the car befor signing and was told that it's nothing to worry about and the damage is documented to find out after returning it it wasn't documented at all and now I'm getting something I didn't do and was told I didn't have to worry about so your vid is false to a extent. And there needs to be protected ways to deal with these shady rentals places.

We are currently having an issue with Avis for a preexisting scratch, there was no pre-inspection or post inspection when we received the car or after we returned it and guess what we got billed for a scratch that was already on it.

Jesse, this is really irritating and it appears this is a practice that may be used in the rental car industry to have the customers shoulder the cost on ongoing wear and tear, as well as outright damage. I've changed my approach on all this now. I do a walk around and take a video on my phone to assure that no fraudulent claims can be made or damage attributed to me that was already there. That includes the tires. Sorry this happened to you, thanks for letting us know! Best Regards, DFJ

I’m dealing with a similar issue, rented a Ford Explorer from Budget in Nashville last month, and on the very last day (somewhere between pigeon, Forge and Nashville) got a small crack in the bottom right of the windshield, we were forthright when we returned it and they said act of God, which is an insurance term. anyways, we had to sign some stuff when we dropped it off. the last two times I’ve talked to Budget call-center, I’ve been disconnected after pleading my case. I would gladly pay $100 for a tire, they want $850 for a windshield. I’m assuming because the lane departure cameras have to be recalibrated?

Sorry so long to respond. I'm sorry this happened to you. Apparently, the car rental companies have become quite good at passing on their repair and maintenance costs to their customers. I'm curious to know how you would have created a small crack in the corner. That's fairly tough to do in normal use. The high cost of windshield replacement is indeed because of the sensors and such that are attached to or built into the windshields, and the windshields now have to be almost distortion free (meaning higher manufacturing costs) so as to allow the sensors to properly see the lines on the pavement and to tell you when you've departed from your lane. Are they attempting to simply add this charge onto the credit card you paid with at the time of rental? You could stop payment to force a negotiation. Again, I'm sorry to hear this has happened to you. Best, DFJ

Budget is framing me for damages that I did not do. 5 months after I returned a car Budget sends me a picture of a scratch that I did not do. They sent the issue to collections & I don't have pictures of the car when I returned it. 😪 I am going to fight it because I did not do the damage they're accusing me of doing.
