To avoid the corporate zombie virus, Eugene shares how focusing on the meaning of work and life is far more epoch-making that money. A cliche yet true insight into his story and his mental struggles, as an illustration, resonating with a powerful message. “Eugene Seah is an ex-corporate zombie who spent nearly 15 years doing jobs he didn’t like just to pay the bills. For the past 5 years, he changed his career to pursue his passion and mission, now lives each day bursting with energy and life. He’s been invited to speak and coach in many countries and industries, and his inspirational story has been featured across several media including TV, radio and newspapers.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. There are two things which stood out for me in Eugene's talk. First, it's the first time I have seen a TED talk done in such an interactive manner. The unidirectional communication format of the TED talk has always been a minor concern that I have. It appears Eugene has found a way out! The other thing is it takes a lot of courage and self-confidence to lay your entire life of mistakes out for people to see. Not many people, even heads of big, global MNCs, would dare to do this. I think only a genuine need to help people would drive someone like Eugene to share his own life story.

This is one of the best Ted Talk I have come across on the topic of how to live your life by design! One of the main highlights of this fantastic talk was how we humans lose ourselves in the process of living our lifes due to various external factors! I had the privilege of meeting Eugene Seah and spent solid two days with him at an Agile Conference in Kuala Lumpur and it was incredibly powerful to hear how he challenged life when life decided to knock him down at the age of 38. He definitely leads by example and inspires the audience not just by his talk but also by his humility! Talk to him to know him!

We totally agree with Eugene! When our Founder (Amit Prakash) realised that he has become a Corporate Zombie, he decided to take a big risk by becoming independent in a foreign country (Singapore) by founding Motivus Consulting and leaving a high paying expat job!

Meaningful. Younger generation needs to hear this, especially since everything is evolving and moving so quickly. Things are getting outdated so quickly. Just cos someone said something is a formular 10 years ago doesn't mean it's going to work.

Very inspiring and touching speech! Searching the meaning of life is so important than just for the sake of earning money! Money can be earned in many ways, and once it combines with the meaning, life reborn!

It can be a tough task holding the attention of the audience, especially Singaporeans who are used to being entertained from a young age. It is also important to see our family members as our blessings, instead of financial burdens which the prevailing economic mindset would have us believe. Kudos to you Eugene for harnessing your edutainment skills and experience to engage your audience.

Reminded me of this phrase I heard before. "Your work is not about your work. Rather your work is nothing more than the greatest vehicle for your personal growth."

Nice! Personal Growth is a lifelong journey to pursue aspiration & purpose in life. Nobody needs to go through an adversity to realize how vulnerable we can get.

EUGENE, Though I have heard your story many times, i must say it’s always moving and reminds me not to be fearful. Life is like a canvas of paper and we have to decide what we want to paint and who we are painting for. I’m so happy you found your calling and fulfilment and I wish that I will find mine too soon.

We're conditioned according to the beliefs of those around us: parents, teachers, etc. This starts at a very early age when all we want to do is be accepted. And even if we realize "wait, something is off here...", we're swooped into the vortex. Before we know it, we become comfortable, and that comfort is actually the slow death of our personal growth. There's a reason why the path less taken is that of meaningful work. Even though it reaps much better fruits than those received during our time as a "corporate zombie," the discomfort involved in getting to the end goal (making less money, being made fun of, etc.) deters the weak of heart. Coming across professionals who have chosen (whether intentionally or unintentionally) a life of meaningful work and have found passion in what they are doing despite early hardships reassures me that I'm on the right path as well. "Life's too short to waste on regrets." Thanks so much for being such a visionary and sharing your story with the world 🌎

nice storytelling style presentation. the content though quite narrow, putting a bit of a negative vibe on "corporate". I'd prefer the word purpose. When we look beyond our own self, broaden the view to the people and the world, you'd see why you are doing what you are doing. There are a lot of corporate workers - important people (I mean not just those at the top) collecting data and typing data just so we can have meaningful analytics to create solutions, there are those engineers who may be viewed as zombies walking around, but I cannot imagine without them how solutions can be created. It may look "meaningless" day in day out churning data or running machines, but they have a purpose, and I have seen such people truly happy doing mundane day in day out and some with good money and some not, and the key is they know their purpose.

Ling Kulanko you raised a very good point! It’s important to note that a corporate zombie is NOT a person who does mundane work. It’s a person who has mentally and emotionally resigned from the work he’s doing, but continues to go to work anyway, due mainly to the salary (money).
