On the point of the nuclear saber rattling the professor said, China already stated when it comes to Taiwan's independence, the result is a nuclear war with whom ever assists Taiwan in that. So what use does the US saying it would engage en nuclear war serve in this, doesn't make sense what the prof. was saying. The Chinese are basically saying they will burn the world rather than losing Taiwan.

I’ve frequented mainland china many times during my trips to Hong Kong (crossing the border to mainland) and after talking to locals from all age groups. When they hear I’m from the UK, they talk very positively. Asking about weather, work, food etc. They don’t really give a crap about our politics, only care about what’s happening in their own country. And yes locals I’ve spoken to, share their disagreements about how the government/local government handles certain issues. So from personal experience of travelling to China for almost 20 years, and speaking to locals about politics, they want peace and don’t see ‘western’ countries as ‘enemies’. In fact they look up to American cultures and European architecture etc. I encourage folks to travel to China, it’s quite an eye opening experience. Especially if you aren’t shy to speak to locals!

I think most of us "westerns" don't see chinese people as enemies but rather we see their government as one. The problem with China is that it is totalitarian and the sound of a totalitarian regime having the most power scares us, which it should. I don't think I would care about China becoming a new global super power if it was a fair democracy and it's government wouldn't have ill intentios.

I agree with a lot of things John Mearsheimer said, but on the thread of using nuclear weapon on Taiwan toward the Chinese is not smart. This will trigger the Chinese get even closer with Russia and produce more nuclear weapons themselves. The only advantage Americans have is that they have more nuclear war heads. But America is already behind on delivery of missals and defend missal attacks. America is continuously failing the hypersonic missals test, but the Chinese is already designing hypersonic delivery of smaller missals to intercept missal attacks after their success in multiple types of hypersonic delivery vehicles. They are also designing suborbital bomber with initial success. This will make American missal defence system useless. Chinese government will not put up the thread on Taiwan since they deeply believe Taiwan is part of China. If the communist government behaves weak on this matter, they will loose their legitimacy.

I have watched many John Mearsheimer's speeches and interviews and I have to agree. Though, comparing to other "experts", John is quite right on many factors about China. TBF, he is still an American, looking at things from an American's perspective, hence, he is quite but not 100% spot on.
@Thisnthat979

John's problem is that he sees most countries as simple minded beasts, react base on instincts, eat when they are hungry, try to mate when the mating season comes. But a leader of the country , even he is a dictator can't start a war like a cat suddenly decide to get in fight with another one. When a high profile scholar like John visits China and asks questions in English, people who speaks to him are likely arranged by the government and only spread propaganda supported by the commie, he can't have real conversation if he doesn't speak the language and talk to the real people, reading between the lines and understand what exactly they think. I spend 20+ years in China, speak the language well, have many Chinese friends, not a single Chinese I ever talk to in person (online community is another story) wants to be at war with Taiwan, they don't really care if Taiwan is a separate country or not. They want to visit though. There are many other things John is wrong about China(and other countries), his ignorance is beyond believe. I am not sure what experts you are referring to, but any one who have real insight in Chinese politics speaks Chinese well(better than myself) and spend at least 3 years living there.

Using nuclear war to threaten china about reclaim their own territory Taiwan blows my mind. That’s suicidal talk. China now has hypersonic missile that can reach us mainland in 15 minutes. As a Chinese, it's hilarious to see how John thinks a slight threat of using nuclear might work. He forgot we were the only country under nuclear threat by both the USSR and the USA in the late 60s. Even at that time, we still wanted to defend our own state sovereignty. Taiwan province is not America's core interest, but it is ours. It's just about seeing both sides' willingness(costs). We don't have as much nuclear as America has, but still, enough for once. We both know each other's capabilities. Bluffing known by both is just trash talk. John grew up during the cold war era. Somehow, I think he is unbelievably naive about Chinese determination.

I am a Chinese who constantly watch what China and US authorities on their preparations for confrontations for the counter part. I think Chinese strategy for US military confrontation is simple and clear: make sure if war occurs, US military can’t win the war. That’s the best strategy for US military hegemony: US can’t lose a war to another peer competitor, otherwise USA will immediately lose its prestige/influence over other regional powers. Good luck for both side.

at the same time, US politicians and media like to paint China as an aggressive player, expanding on Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan and South China Sea etc, as if China is practicing its own version of "Monroe doctrine", thus gives US reasons to intervene, and provide check on balance. This is just absurd if one to start look at history dimension, one thing US politicians and refuse to do, average American public are not interested at all unless they are put into the situation like flying tigers and their descendants. The idea of both US and China building military power further so they will contain each other from doing reckless moves always strikes me as completely schizophrenic. If military power is constantly build up, it's going to explode sooner or later. These exprets think that this is all a competition and strategic containment, but for me it's all pre-WW1 all over again. If the last 10 years have taught us something is that Status Quos and "strategic ambiguities" are going to crumble sooner or later with catastrophic consequences. It's all just increasing tension higher and higher until it blows up. And they should stop counting on Cold War history in my opinion, in which war was avoided. Yes, BARELY AVOIDED.

Our ancestors won't agree if we allow TW to announce independence and assist bad guys to contain ourselves. Therefore, China will unite TW sooner or later at all cost, if any outsider wanna stop it, China will fight to the end with no doubt 😊

Taiwan issue is one of the root cause of friction between US.and China. Taiwan returned to China at the end of WWII, at the cost of 30 millions Chinese lives, but many in US either lost such history dimension, or don't want to acknowledge such due to current politics. According to an article from Congress Library, "The Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) was one of the most destructive conflicts of World War II... This war marked the culmination of growing Japanese aggression toward China since an earlier Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). With half of China ruined, 20 million Chinese (military and non-military) dead... the eight-year conflict was one of the bloodiest in world history."

Thucydides, thought of as the first real historian, commented that nations go to war for “reasons of fear, honor, and interest.” That simple formulation arguably hasn’t been improved for its insight and brevity. Only the wishful thinkers and utopians think you can minimize those Big Three and they interact. Since the beginning of time, the most dangerous animals in the forest were other humans so the impulse to fear others has always been a part of pragmatic security. The “security dilemma” occurs when fear leads nations to imagine (rightly or wrongly) that another nation’s defenses are in fact offensive, meant to invade or otherwise coerce. You would be negligent to not consider the downside risk. Historical examples abound. Love has nothing to do with it, sadly.

The Chinese won’t tolerate the humiliation anymore and will be sure that the US won’t risk the death of 100m+ American from the nuclear war over Taiwan. >"Y ou don't respect the power of other nations, you fear it." Does Germany fear the power of France? Does Italy fear the power of the UK? 100 years ago yes, but this dynamic is not inevitable, it requires nations to see international relations as a zero sum game of dog eat dog. It isn't. How much has China suffered from the oppression of the US lead international order over the last 30 years? My wife is Chinese and Ive seen it's spectacular advancement and development with my own eyes. China's foreign policy is not 'realist' except in the narrow sense of Mearsheimer's great power contest Malthusianism. It has the delusion that the leadership of the Communist part made China wealthy, when actually it was the communist party suspending communism and not ruling the economy hardly at all that enabled that growth. They succeeded by simply stopping doing harm. They then messed it up by not intervening when they should have done to cool property markets, and in fact stoked the flames for too long creating a debt bubble. China's foreign policy is utterly disastrous dicing with death. They have utterly alienated every single other country in the entire region through constant, persistent antagonism. Everybody from North Korea, South Korea, Japan, the Phillipines and Vietnam hate their living guts. Even Vietnam is now cosying up to the US, and has hosted good will visits by US carriers twice, because China has been ruthlessly bullying them so much. All these countries are arming up, and co-ordinating with or outright hosting the US military. To understand how badly China has pissed them off, realise that South Korea has actually started military co-operation with Japan. Even 10 years ago that was unthinkable. Th Chinese strategy isn't realism, it's delusional psychosis. I agree we need to understand China, he makes a good point on that, but only because they're so blinded by dogma and ideology that it's very hard to understand what they are thinking.

the fundamental contest between china and the US is the fact that china has 1.4 billion people and will inevitably overtake the US as the dominant economic power. Do you think the US is loved in south america after 200 years of intervention? Chinese 'bullying' doesn't hold a candle to the kind of crap the US did to LatAM during the cold war. The only thing comparable would be the sino-vietnam war. But given that mexico has more or less forgiven the US for annexing its northern half 100 years ago I think china's neighbours would get over their gripes in time too. Countries like South Korea, Japan or the Philippines were ever china's to win over as long as US troops are stationed there. But the fact still stands that none of these countries can ignore china as china is their largest trading partner.

They don’t need to diverge from those of Russia or China. If those countries were liberal democracies, the US could put away the aircraft carriers and get on with grading with them. But I'll tell you which country is really hated (and I'm not talking about the "international community" that America refers to which is actually just biased Western nations and not the actual world). The country that is really hated by the majority of mankind is the United States. It is the most violent country to ever existed anywhere on this entire planet as it's always at war for 222 years out of its 239 existence with less than 20 years of peace. It has 800 military bases worldwide, it has the largest military budget in the world. it has participated in global blackmail, global assassinations, global toppling of democratic governments, installing of dictators, invading & bombing other countries, global sanctioning of other countries, backstabbing allies.....etc. Even AMERICAN VETERANS knew about the misdeeds of the America government, and you don't? The U.S government makes even the ROMAN EMPIRE look like saints. NO OTHER COUNTRY on Earth in human history is ever that violent, save for maybe perhaps the British empire. For you to come over here to preach that nonsense, it's bullshyt. At least make it make sense. But I'm so glad that in this century, America is decline, and this is China' century in which China will surpass the United States. Any country that perform violence for the majority of its existence DOES NOT deserve to be a superpower. This century is as far as your country will go as a declining superpower, no further.

From American exceptionalism, to Monroe Doctrine, and global hegemony, the US is leading to nothing but self destruction as many empires did. Why other nations are viewed as enemies, and not trading partners, and helpful neighbours in this planet village? With such a narrow mind, massive arrogance, an addiction of entitlement for everything, and a mindset of winner-takes-ALL, there wont be any global stability but _chaos_ and shooting wars. At the minimum, there are endless fights - racial, social or political - *INTERNAL* conflicts that resemble a new level of civil war.😢

However I truly understand the intimidation & skepticism that China has caused amongst opposite superpowers. I mean! China was one of the poorest countries 40 years ago which is half the age of the current US president. The problem with our leaders is that they choose deceit & cunningness when they make diplomatic relations. There's no American politcian who would give you the dangers of making the USA an ally yet they have a bookful of how dangerous their rival is & at times they punish smaller countries for choosing to be on the opposite side. The same thing happens with those other countries. However the USA is just more aggressive & straight to the point as far their intentions. China is more sleek & have snake like tendencies. The USA would have more universal power if they weren't as arrogant & callous. 5:26 "Where's that from? Why can't we respect the power of other nations?" I feel the question is answered in and of itself Lex. We can't respect the power of other nations because there wasn't enough power to respect. The Soviet Union wasn't powerful enough to hold it's country together. Today Xi and Putin are working very hard behind the scenes to create extremists in the US. We stand today because we chose a model of government that has been and still is fairly resilient to that sort of pressure. Xi an Putin "respect" our power because it's there, when they push they feel the brick wall that is the United States. When we pushed, the Berlin Wall came down, then the Soviet Union. And now Russia is coming down again because they pushed too hard and tripped. Anyways, the point is, that's the US's business. Once the US realized it was POSSIBLE to exert influence over the entire world, they realized that was a POWER that had to be very closely guarded and very carefully exercised. That's why the US hasn't directly invaded Cuba and taken it over. Because the US doesn't want to invade a bunch of countries across the globe and claim a new world order, they'd rather make up a bunch of rules and suggest everyone who doesn't want war with their neighbors follow along, and it's worked whether you want to admit it or not. Bring up a million examples but none of them are WWIII. The global deathrate due to war and violence has been plummeting since WWII so go figure. When you have someone in charge who wants peace and is serious about it, we get technological advancements unlike the world has ever seen, globalization and unprecedented world peace. Now that technology and wealth is being leveraged by countries like China to assert themselves as a "multi-polar" power. No way. China's gunna stay right where it's at.

"Mind your business, develop good relations to have alies, and if a bully comes to get you, be prepared to beat his ass". Another is intervening in other nations business to sabotage them or make them weaker. Like the US has been doing in Taiwan with China (or the plethora of other interventions it has done before around the world), and the US absurd sanctions to undermine technological competition, which is intrusive, disrespectful, and can provoke wars.

Groundless arrogance. Remember to pay your taxes so that walls can be built.

@7hx89 wow there is someone clever enough who is not paying tax!! But wait blatant delusional dude, you may still not find out but we societies/human kind made a social contract to create a Lewiethan (go and read Tomas Hobbes, Ressou, instead after watching 5 mins videos on youtube being master of universe and knowing all) to pay tax for thousands year ago. Wake up! Groundless? This Mearsheimer, he is hard-core realists. What is political realism? One of the major school of thought in the Politics and International Relations. And when it comes to the great power politics realism is the Holly Book! Start from Pheloponosian wars, Thuciydides : "It was the rise of Athens and the fear that this instilled in Sparta that made war inevitable" we call it "Thucydides trap". And then do some research you will find how many times this observation proved itself in the course of history. Last happened between the British empire and the Germans and costed 2 World War to the humanity. Maybe after then, you might find a ground for your ignorance and start developing an understanding of your surroundings. Thuciydides Trap Game theory in politics Prisinor Dilemma.. Neither China trust the USA nor the USA trusts China, simply they cannot, how one can be make sure of the others' intention? This is not because l want it or not, only because of reality of the great power politics, obviously you don't even listen the videos which are the source ot your high supreme intelligence...
