In this lovely How To Ballast and Weather HO Scale Track video - I go over my way of ballasting and weathering track. Specifically for HO scale but you can definitely use this for all scales. As always I wanted to add to the hundreds of other vids out there -- - but hopefully this one will pop up more frequently than the others cause all this stuff was super hard to find when I was starting off. Any who I hope you all enjoy the video - stay crispy. Peace y'all.

Oh, man! You're a genius! I never would have thought to remove a tie or rwo and then skew them. That's brilliant, and exactly what I needed! Subbed.

I've started my first layout, and I've watched many professional modelers demonstrating track balasting scenery, but this is by far my favorite one. Great work!

This whole demonstration shows one thing for sure : There is no way things can be done quickly ! It needs time, material and passion. That's the professional way to do things right. And that's why the result is awesome and unique.

Love the broken ties look. That’s how a lot of the rails in Wisconsin looks. The winters really pulverize them.

Looks great! Taking the time and effort to "model" track work truly pays off when taking photos later on, and you've got it down pat. In addition to removing random ties, I also take my nippers and cut off the end of a tie here and there on an angle so they are not all uniform length. Also, I leave a little unballasted space between random ties here and there and fill with some static grass pressed in. I tried the Woodland Scenics rail painters, and they work great at first, until the pen tips get torn up. Your paint brush techniques is just as good, if not better. I have to try painting the rail plates rust like you did, that adds a lot. Like you said, more than one way to skin a cat, but that begs the question: Why are people skinning cats?

Great video! I clean the tops of the rails as I paint small sections with a paper towel before it dries so don't have to use any abrasives on the rail. I also just use Elmers or equivalent to attach track to cork/foam/etc so I can easily remove it when needed. Track is quite pricey to replace when modify the layout. I enjoyed your cutting some of the ties. Will look great on old sidings, etc. Plan on following your method for that. Again, nice video with tips/techniques. Multiple ways to accomplish various tasks on the layout and I enjoy learning new/different techniques, thanks for sharing!

I just found your channel. I enjoyed your trestle bridge build. This was a good video too. Building these practice pieces is a great way to try new techniques without the risk of ruining the layout. They are good for displaying rolling stock too.

I've been using a 50 - 50 water to white glue for 50 years and the result is ballast as hard as concrete. I also like Boomer a lot. I just don't spend the money for Mat Medium.

I have used that ballast mix recently and wish I'd done it more on other parts of the layout. I like your touches but on a larger layout you'd be doing only that. As Boomer says, that is why he doesn't build large layouts anymore. You just can't satisfy your creative side.😆

Hey Greg so I use backyard dirt mixed with some sand/dark earth colored grout. Also depends on the look I'm going for I'll sift it through a stocking... Thanks as always brotha.
