Btw, you can use burned down charcoal. It’s completely ok. Put it in the chimney bc it will light quickly and help light the new charcoal. Your food will not taste any different from using left over charcoal.

I haven't used starter fluid in 20 years. Don't know why more people don't know about this? Had a few of these in garage and gave one to neighbor and explained the lighting advantages, saw him lighting coal a few days later. He filled chimney with charcoal then proceeded to douse all the coal in chimney with.....starter fluid and threw match on it.

My dad did it just like you do, newspaper in the bottom of the chimney, but in addition to the newspaper he'd soak a little cooking oil into the bottom two layers of briquettes. He said that added a little more fuel to the fire to get them started. My uncle did it a bit different... he'd take a paper napkin and get it wet with some cooking oil, then he'd roll some newspaper over the napkin. Just like you do he'd make two or three rolls and put them in the bottom of the chimney. In either case the oil would burn a little longer than the paper did by itself.

Hi, I got a bit frustrated with my husband taking so long to light the BBQ so I have just finished making my own DIY charcoal chimney starter and I really appreciate this "how to...". MY DIY project cost €2 to make! I used a catering size chopped tomato tin can, cut the top and bottom off, used a church key to punch holes along the bottom for vents. I screwed 4 screws into can about 1" from bottom vents and replaced the top of the can and pushed it down to where the 4 screws were. I made a handle with 2 L shaped shelf fittings and a piece of broom handle and recycled an old coffee tin for a shield from the heat and attached this to the handle. I cannot wait to use it tomorrow (Irish weather permitting of course). Hubby will be coaxed into watching your video first!!! Thanks you

Yeah, the whole process is a learning experience, everyone on here is going to have different ways to do everything that works for them & not someone else. I don't even know why I started fooling around with charcoal again. I guess it's just more fun & more traditional then propane. Just handling it & smelling it burn reminds me of family cook outs from back in the day & I remember the fun times with my dad & grandpa on the grill. I miss them a lot & stuff like this brings it all back for me & my son for a little while. Keep that fire burning.

The Weber chimney starter is a must have for a charcoal grill, (unless you have a performer or self igniting grill). I agree with all the comments about using very little newspaper. Starts the charcoal faster. I spray the paper with oil and that produces a good flame. I haven't used briquettes for years, since the stores began selling Lump Charcoal. It's what my father and his friends used in Argentina for the weekend "asado".Sort of a ritual, it was, and still now briquettes are unknown there. For larger cooks seasoned chunks of wood were lit at around 10 in the morning, by 4 in the afternoon people aproached the meat with some bread in the left hand, sharp knife in the right and cut themselves a slice of their favorite beef or maybe a chorizo or two. Chimichurri, Malbec, friends and family completed the day. I do really appreciate your effort in helping people with an informative video. It's one of the best things about You Tube.

Great video! I'm new to grilling and I have had problems keeping the fire going by using lighter fluid. I've tried laying the coals in a pyramid form, but most of the time it still goes out. Last time I built half the pyramid and soaked in lighter fluid then built the rest of the pyramid and soaked again. That worked, but the flame it gave was too high. It was a little dangerous. So after seeing this video, I'm definitely getting a chimney lighter. Thanks for the video!

Hey man, Kain Nosgoth here- I'm an old veteran now. And tonight my cousin and I cooed for a whole group of people. He commandeered my oven and did the chicken breasts, and I went and cooked the 'taters. I took about 6 whole 'taters, and about 3 or 4 bunches of sliced 'taters. I oiled up a few slices of aluminum foil, laid a bed of onions and carrots, salt and pepper, and rolled em' up and placed em' directly over the fire. At around 20-25 minutes fr the sliced, and 30+ for the whole 'taters which were pretty big, I took it all off of the grill and they were so done you could run a fork clear through to the other side! Our guests loved em' especially the nice layer of melted Romano cheese they had on them! I think my cousin and I got the job! It's 3 hours later and the charcoal is STILL red hot, sadly it's dark here in the East and I have no more to cook for tonight, but there will be other days, that I can promise! Hope you're cookin' up a storm in your part of the woods too!

Great video, very helpful! The mistake I made the first time I used it, was to wait until the coals were completely white. By that time, there wasn't a lot of life left to the coals. Luckily it worked out okay, since I was just making a couple burgers. Thanks for the video!

I have a chimney and used to light it this way now all I use is a tin of chafing gel you substitute the paper for the tin of gel one tin last a couple of hours so you get quite a few starts, in America I think they are called sterno gel really easy and no mess from the burnt paper.

Thank you for that great idea. I've used the stuff that you mention to keep food warm, and I can see how it would be great for lighting charcoal. I'll have to put that on my list of things to try!

Good video, I suggest lumpwood charcoal, it's better than the random contents of the briquette stuff. Sure it's more expensive but it's considered to be better by most and I agree the flavour/aroma is better. Since lumpwood is more expensive, I find, I like to put a few cheap briquettes at the bottom of the chimney so just forms a base then put the lumpwood in, the stuff in the bottom tends to turn to ash and disintegrate the fastest anyway which is exactly what I want. Also yes you can use less paper or fuel than in the video but will be take longer to get the charcoals ready, I use a natural wood wool firelighters to start it, which will burn for a good 10 mins, really speeding up the process, I sometimes add newspaper but I feel that when you burn something like newspaper which has ink on it you are contaminating the charcoals....

Nice !!! :) Simple , to the point , all the info needed , it may seem like a simple thing, but from experience the amount of people that do not know how to light coals efficiently without using lighter fluid, starter blocks etc , is scary !! ( I'm an in-betweener , I use either the chimney method or for certain burns just start off a few bricks with a burner )

I use a propane torch to light the bottom row of charcoal. I don’t have all that ash flying around from the newspaper when i’m ready to start cooking. I have also found that the charcoal is ready when the chimney quits smoking. About 20 minutes.

I used to collect newspapers binned at work at the end of the day. Then tightly roll two of them from the folds, tie .with thin steel wire and trim. Stored out of sight, they appeared when everyone decided it was time for a barbecue. They went out to collect wood from the countryside. I would place the rolls crisscross in the big brick and steel plate barbie. The locals and me would cook our sausages and steaks My work team would return and ask how we had a barbecue without wood. It was so funny. Cleaning was a breeze as there only was little coils of black steel wire. I always carried newspaper rolls in my car. Half size rolls work too, as newspaper tears very easily from the fold.

@Spoif While it may seem like holding the wire handle will provide some benefit, I've simply not seen that play out in real life. The last thing I want is to have my hand over top of the flames, and the chimney, even when full, isn't very heavy. Two hands simply aren't needed.

Thanks for posting man. Don't worry about those other guys commenting, they don't know anything. Your method works good enough. I tried Kingsford & Royal Oak with no problems. Cooks up fast & hot. Got the chimney at Lowes $14.98 + tax. Saw a junker at Target for less but it was small & didn't have the extra features - didn't buy it. Charcoal was cheap there tho. Anyway, I just have to laugh at everyone that criticizes your video. It's your method & it works for you. If they disagree with whatever it is they don't like, then they can go through all the trouble to make their own video, edit it, & post it. Happy grilling to you sir.

Very nice video, but let me point out a few things that I don't do and get excellent results. I been using the Weber Chimney Starter for years. You DO NOT NEED ALL THAT NEWSPAPER! I use only TWO (2) SHEETS and get the same results as you get. WITH A LOT LESS SMOKE! No joking or kidding or trying to be a smart guy. Two sheets, that's it, rolled up like in this video and within 5 to 8 or so minutes you charcoal is lit. Secondly, get away from using those charcoal briquettes and start using HARDWOOD LUMP CHARCOAL. It is all natural, not additivies. Those Kingsford Briquettes contain chemicals. Chemicals are needed so the charcoal can be formed into briquettes. Not good. Go natural, get yourself a big bag of Royal Oak Hardwood Lump Charcoal. It burns hotter than the Kingsford Briquettes so you get more heat, this is especially good when cooking steaks on the grill, but Lump Charcoal does not burn as long as the briquettes. Not critizing, just informing.

I really appreciate your detailed and informative post. I realize from what you have written and what others have written that I can get the same effect from not as much newspaper. The smoke doesn't bother me, and the neighbors don't complain, but the point is still very valid that it's a waste of newspaper. I'll try to use less next time. You also make a valid point about the Kingsford charcoal briquettes. Everyone tells me that lump is better. I have yet to get a bag because most of the cooking that I do is on the Weber Smokey Mountain and the instructions say NOT TO USE LUMP. I have heard of people who do use it, but personally I have shied away from it. Because I use so much of it in the WSM, I don't buy anything but that even when I'm grilling. Feel free to add anything else that you think is a good idea to this video, and any of my others. Thanks for watching!!
