barrel racing is fun and if you want to train your horse to barrel race practise sharp turns, fast straight canters/gallops and circles around single barrels. Begin to walk your horse around the barrels and help him judge distance then go to faster paces as he begins to get the hang of it always keep your body balanced and dont pick up bad habits. Only thing I about this was the horse cantered not loped :/ loping is more of a slow 1-2 pace. But good key points :)

@Callygirl89 Ok, but don't blame me when ur reifing on the outside rein because of panic of being to close to the barrel. that happens to almost everybody that uses 2 hands. and its bad for the pockets as well. you tend to pull out instead of using pressure in them

My horse has one less back one thing that all other breeds and he's made for sprinting threw deserts for days, he stops on his front legs and kinda hops to the last barrel, and he was almost dead about 2 years ago but he runs 20sec now whille we're working on our turns and he's barely trying.

@iluvbarrelracing1 you want controll at absolutely all speeds before you look at speed. but if you want speed, lope him and push him harder after each barrel and get him full out. it took my horse a while to get the galloping concept

So since the pattern at my shows is a bit larger than say an NBHA pattern and our average placing times are between 19-21 that's slow? I find your statement of "a 20 sec run is really slow no matter the pattren" a bit messed up. Some of these horses at my shows if you put them on the NBHA pattern they're consistantly placing in the 1D times, most often between 1st and 3rd. I suggest you do your homework a little better before downing 20 sec patterns.

+allydagator Not to sound rude, but have you ever actually seen barrel racing? The VAST majority of people put a hand on the horn when doing barrels at speed to keep themselves from losing balance and potentially ruining the run. There isn't a written rule about it, but it's one of those unspoken rules. If the horse doesn't require two hands around a barrel, you use one.

This video is very misleading and it's not a very good demonstration at all. When you start a horse on the pattern, you start at a WALK, and you DO NOT advance to a faster pace until the horse is doing the pattern CORRECTLY. This horse was dropping his shoulder pretty much every time on the first and second barrel and it needs to be corrected before it becomes a habit.
@katieburkett5884
@katieburkett5884 8 жыл бұрын
+BarrelsPolesandJack That is very true but by the way he handles going around the barrels I think he was already started. I think this was meant to introduce the sport to a younger audience to persuade them to try it.
@katieburkett5884
@katieburkett5884 8 жыл бұрын
+BarrelsPolesandJack And yes that dropping the shoulder can become a problem. My horse has tended to do that. I walk him up on the barrel and where he starts to bring his shoulder in to early, I turn him around in the opposite direction. < Fallon Taylor

My dream is to own a ranch, get 2 jobs with to do with horses, an I am at a young not too young age.. And I really have been dreaming to own a horse, ride English for my first time, and I want to teach children Barrel racing, ect.. So is pole bending, barrel racing safe for 9+? or somethkg...
@p3pp3r70

Barrel racing and pole bending are soley a western sport and don't let a child under 10+ into a gallop unless highly supervised or padded walls and a safe horse I learned to ride at the age of five but I wasn't allowed to gallop until I was seven and that was only because of my experience

when she comes to the barrel she needs to let the horses hips pass and then turn when she is trotting and loping when she runs the horse will finish the barrel its self if u watch the horse comes out and goes in wide the first to barrels u save times getting closer and turning when hips get even with the barrel it but only when running she dosn't needs to come in so wide to that first and second barrel at the last the horse needs to go out wide like she did and come in close and run home

You do NOT want a long back, longer backs make it harder for the horse to turn the barrel quick and smoothly. And a long back has nothing to do with the stride, the stride has to do with the slope of the shoulder and the length of the underline of the horse.

None of you are correct actually. Horses natural gaits are walk,trot,canter. Western or english (unless gaited). The terms walk,jog,lope only apply in western showing, and showing only. They mean the same thing though.

I do agree this is a pretty rediculous video. Its okay for those who have never even see the pattern. you have to add so much more stuff. rate points. turn points. correct equipment. she didn't slow her horse down around the barrels during the slow work. I would like for the mto be farther from the barrel because as they gain speed to the 1D the will lean into them therefore not enough room to allow for that. this horse cut off its back turn points and went wide into. Just thoguht I would help!

You're conceded. I looked at some of the comments you put on other people's videos and you act like a big know it all and really what you're suggesting to the riders is not relevant to their situation.And frankly a lot of them seem condenscending and rude. You could be a student spouting off what her trainer says for all I know. You surely don't have evidence on your account to back up that you train barrel horses. You have two videos of text, not enough for your advice to be credible.

Barrel Racing hurts the horse a lot, horses are not meant to turn on a dime like that can no one see that don't you dare comment down saying it was trained to do that horses are forced to do that they are forced to accept that hey this what i get to do for the rest of my life, and yes i have been in western and English and i know how much pain it brings the horse to jump on their back and ride at a gallop and turn them on a dime and jump the horse higher than they're supposed too After 15 minutes of riding a horse they will start to get inflammation in they're back
@katieburkett5884
@katieburkett5884 8 жыл бұрын
+The WaitWhat PodCast Yes I agree turning fast and such things like slamming against their back could hurt joints. But I would also like to point out that I do this also. On my stud horse he is full blown mustang. The best way to test a horse and see if their is any inflamation of such or if the horse hurts is but rubbing your fingers down their back. My horse has a strong back. I truly believe what youre saying is correct but the horses that you see may not be rode enough to have such strong carrage. The only thing that may hurt this horse is it can and will mess with them mentally. All they start to believe is run when they see an alley way or arena causing them to be ring sour. That's when a horse becomes dangerous to himself and the rider. But with the right training and time spent, you can avoid this.
@katieburkett5884
@katieburkett5884 8 жыл бұрын
+The WaitWhat PodCast The horses believe it or not are actually trained to turn the barrels the speed is just what makes it look very quick. They're taught to use their rear end going around the barrels. And if you stretch your horse properly before ever working them you can also avoid lots of damage to your horse. They're just like humans.
