This looks so idyllic, I love it! I have about 150 models of tomb kings to paint and base and I am so tempted to use this method!

It depends on the desert itself but i like more orange looking darker shades for sand and dunes. A little bit more like the sun burned deserts in california or australia. I swap the brownish colors with a mix of brown and orange or sometimes pure orange. It is just my personal taste, but you may want to give it a try aswell :)

Most people use sand and so on for making the texture of the sand but it gets to harsh and rocky looking more like yellow gravel. This is EXACTLY what ive been looking around for the past 2 days and on top of that its made on a very high quality level, very well done sir

Loved the video, been searching for a while for a good sand dunes basing concept, looking forward to useing the models feet before drying to make imprints on the sand, and making necron crystals sprouting out of the ground like plants

Just base around the mini or pin the mini to the base

I just did some sand bases for a custom Settlers of Catan robber. I took some simmilar steps, but it's really cool to see a way more refined version. I'll have to try this out and see if I can out-do my last desert bases!

While watching this I was thinking that a brown contrast paint diluted with some medium would be perfect for the wash. It seems like every time I go to use a wash these days I end up using Contrast instead.

How does the AK Interactive Light Earth Basing Paste compare to the Vallejo Pumice or GW Texture paints?

I don't know about Vallejo but as for GW is as good and MUCH cheaper

I love this. Definitely need to sort myself with some of that AK paste. I just have one question about basing like this... how do I square it so my mini looks like part of the base? Not quite the same if it's haphazardly standing on dunes. Cheers!

You should do the basing with the mini already there. I just did it like this for the tutorial

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you for the reply! And yes... it's obvious when you put it like that. Being a bit new I've umm-ed and arr-ed over doing the base separately or not. The help is appreciated.

Happy to help! There's a time and place for every option (base separately and base with mini glued) also there are ways to do it and get a good result either way but I find it easier for the most part to base with the mini attached,. specially for simple basing schemes

I love this! Any tips for doing this with minis already on the base, or without them on the base but making it look like their feet are in the dunes?
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures

I did this with a mini on the base already. Just make his feet coincide with a lower part of a dune.

Beautiful, great tutorial! I’m color blind so I’m having troubles with finding perfect colors as my sand paste is not AK, but Vallejo „desert sand”, which is not as pale and rather saturated, and highlights od pallid w flesh does not look very good. can you recommend sth? Thx

Would any of the gdub technicals be able to stand in for the light earth, Like armageddon dust maybe?
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 3 жыл бұрын
Armageddon dust is the closest but it's still a bit dark. What I would do is paint over the texture with Wraithbone.

Texture and lighter colour. To be honest Desert Sand will work as well, it's just that I personally prefer Light Earth

Neat guide but wouldnt it make more sense to have the peaks be the brightest part? Thats where the light will hit, while the shadows will form behind the dunes.

Looks amazing and I’m looking to do something similar with my Idoneth. What GW texture would you recommend for the dunes? Also I would like a subtle blue as though under water. Would a wash work for this?
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 4 жыл бұрын
For a shore type base, look at my How to Base - Water Effects video. As for GW textures, the problem is none of them is light enough so use any and just Basecoat it using Wraithbone.

That's better than just getting bird cage sawdust or sand stolen from a children's playground and just washing it with agrax earthshade which is what most people do.
