In this video, Ibnu and I explain to us just how things are done in his house. How do they get water, how to take a shower, how to use the toilet, and where does the water go? All exciting stuff! Then when I'm all cleaned up, I hop on a bus and head to Bali. Jember was great! I'm sure I'll be back soon....
Jember sangat bagus! Saya yakin saya akan segera kembali....

Pretty humbling experience aye Nick. Makes you appreciate what you had back in the USA. The Indonesian people are incredibly resilient. It's a pity that other KZfaq vlogers doing videos of Indonesia, Bali especially haven't got it in them to venture out of their show pony narcissistic comfort zone like you have. This video brought back good memories of me and my girlfriend backpacking around Indonesia in 1977. Keep up the genuine and down to earth work.

@@NickKTravel I'm glad the internet wasn't around back then, it would have taken away the magic of the adventure. We had 2 good travel guide books, American author Bill Dalton's Indonesia & Papua New Guinea and an Australian Students Union publication Travellers Guide to South East Asia. Both were invaluable. If you can, read up on Bill Dalton an incredibly interesting guy. I think you will relate to him. He lived in Ubud for some time and moved to Solo in 2016 I think. He would be 78 now so not sure if he is still enjoying a good beef rendang or not. Like I said, keep up the great work Nick.

I guess this what makes you different from many traveller/travel vlogger. Your emphasis on human connection is waay deeper than simply just sightseeing or culinary experience which others do on their vlogs. Seeing the "clash of civilizations" between your western/texan culture and these locals are always fascinating. Not to mention seeing you teach kids english with a hint of that south/texan accent, soooo fun, hahaha. Hats off to you Nick, all the best.

Water from the toilet will go into reservoir one, then the dirt will be decomposed by bacteria and moved to reservoir two for purification and then reabsorbed by the soil. That's how traditional toilet work in Indonesia
@rubah74
@rubah74 2 жыл бұрын
You looked incredulous that the "thing" you put into the toilet is far from the house. They usually dig a reservoir underground the walls a lined with sand, coconut husks to control seepage to the surrounding ground besides its already been digested by microbes. You shud know this if you spent a long time in Asia, cleansing yourself with water is better than with paper. Not clean at all.

Indeed, a humbling experience to live with the basic daily necessities of life. Yes, it is difficult at times, but that friendship and warm hospitality displayed by Ibnu's family are true, real and sincere. Appreciate your humbleness, patience and willingness to experience such simple pleasures of rural life. I have experienced such life in my childhood (wells, "squat" toilets and living conditions) and I do appreciate what we have today in our lives. Hopefully, Ibnu's life and his family can improve even more over the years. Thank you, Nick, for showing us this other side of Indonesians' lives and livelihoods. It is the human element that go beyond skin deep and make relationships more enduring and memorable. Looking forward to your next chapter of the journey!

6:40 I just realized that the western world, or maybe first-world countries aren't familiar with the concept of installing a septic tank in their house? Let me explain it to you from what I know. A lot of Indonesian still use the old-fashioned septic tank, including mine. Actually, I think we're all still using septic tank. It's just basically store your "dumps", and then the dumps will be composed by some kind of underground bacteria(?) And for the water they just absorbed back into the groundwater/acquifer. From what I know it's completely clean and safe. We don't have sewer here unlike the first-world countries😅

@kaikart123

When they do have a septic tank, they emptied it every so often as they are usually made with metal or plastic and sealed. They don't want human waste to leach into the groundwater. We just have stronger immune system I suppose, just send your groundwater to a lab to test for E. coli and fecal matter sometimes, you'll be surprised.

@@kaikart123 yeah the more modern ones are made with some kind of metal or plastic. When I was a kid, the septic tank was just an open septic tank with no lid or covers, so it's just the soil and dumps lmao

@@azhari7968 isn't that stinky? I still use septic tank. Even modern housing complex, some of them still use it. Some more modern ones already have water treatment plant inside the complex. However you can't just renovate houses like this, since you gonna need professional and local plumbers. The plumbing should be done correctly to avoid ruining the whole system.

Thanks for sharing the "authentic" experience. Most of Us staying in 4-5 star hotel, where's the fun in that! Kampung, Home cooked meal, angkot and living the native life is the way to go! It's not easy, I'm jealous now.

We can feel the an unconditional love from Ibnu's family to you, such a blessing and have to be grateful. And the toilet with squat model is made like has a bowl or concave part to fill with water, so the bad smells won't go up because stuck by water, it's just a design. Thank you for sharing your incredible moment Nick, safe & sound!! Shout out from a Dallas Maverick fan!
